@Emulator000 Emulator000 released this 19 Oct 21:30

The winner's pose from the front online, Yoshimitsu's glowing sword, and budget phones at up to 60 fps.

Online

  • The winner's pose from the front: if you see the fight from the other side of the stage (both of you picked the same side), a knockout's win pose used to show the winner from behind. It's now shown as the game frames it, and the picture changes sides only where the game's camera cuts anyway. A time-up stays on your side, as in the fight.
  • Playing older versions: 0.7.9 only changes how the game is drawn, so it plays 0.7.8 players exactly as before, and 0.7.7 and 0.7.6 too.

Fighters

  • Yoshimitsu's sword glows again: the original draws a soft haze along his blade every frame, even standing still: green, red for his second costume, and its own colour for Mokujin when he fights as Yoshimitsu. The remake now draws it too, as soft light that follows the blade and fades toward the tip.

Budget phones

  • Up to 60 fps on entry-level phones: the very low picture used to be capped at 30 pictures a second. It now runs at 60 while the phone keeps up, and drops to a steady 30 only if it can't, so the game itself never slows down.
  • Lighter shadows and no anti-aliasing at very low, and lighter shadows at low, so weak GPUs spend less on each picture.
  • Arcade board stages are much lighter: their scenery used to take up to 400 draws a picture. It is now drawn in merged blocks, and only what's in view, so it takes about 50, with the same picture. That helps every device, and makes board stages playable on very low phones.
  • More phones recognised: phones with a small two-core Mali GPU (like the Galaxy A14 5G) now get the very low picture by default.

Nothing needs extracting or importing again. No release carries an app: one holds the game's data, and is built on your machine for your own devices.

Source only: this release carries no game files, no remastered assets, and no Tekken 3 Arcade ROMs, board dumps, extracted files or converted assets. The game is played from an image of your own Tekken 3 disc (USA, SLUS-00402), read on your machine; the README says how.

Online matches that stay together: the two causes of THE GAMES DIFFERED found and fixed, and a server log you can follow.

Online

  • THE GAMES DIFFERED in the middle of a fight: when the other player's press arrives late, the game rewinds a few frames and plays them again. If that happened while a move's own camera shot was playing, the rewind put the camera back wrong, and from then on the two games no longer matched. It was in every version since online play began, between any two players. It's fixed, but each game does its own rewinds, so both players need 0.7.8 for it.
  • THE GAMES DIFFERED right after the fight loads: with the arcade board's fighters, their own hair, tails and belts move in the fight itself. Against a player without them, or with another board's, the two games parted as the fight began, for most of the cast. Now the two games tell each other which board fighters they draw. If they're the same, you both keep them. If not, that match uses the disc's for both, and you see it with the console's models. Against an older version, your game uses the disc's.
  • Watching: a fight played with the board's fighters can only be watched by a game that draws the same ones. Others see it as CANNOT WATCH.
  • Playing older versions: 0.7.8 plays 0.7.7 and 0.7.6 players as before, and 0.7.0 to 0.7.5 and 0.6.5 to 0.6.7 as before.

The server

  • A log with times: every line now starts with its time (UTC). Each match is logged as it begins, with both players' versions and fighters and the board fighters they draw. If it ends early, the log says why; for THE GAMES DIFFERED, it also gives the frame where the games parted. Run the server at 0.7.8 to get these lines.

A d-pad for phones, a PAL speed, a camera that stays back at the walls, the fighters lit as on the console, cleaner effects, and online matches that start together.

Playing

  • D-pad on touch screens: the touch pad now has a d-pad at the bottom left, drawn like a PS5 controller's, with tiny arrows lighting up for the diagonals. A thumb between two keys holds both, so down-back and down-forward are easy to hit. Prefer the old stick? TOUCH DIRECTIONS in REMAKE OPTION switches back.
  • GAME SPEED: a new REMAKE OPTION setting plays the game at 50 Hz, as a PAL console did (five sixths of the speed), or at the usual 60 Hz. Online always plays at 60 Hz.
  • The camera at the walls: with reachable walls, the camera no longer zooms in when the fight reaches a wall. It stays as far back as anywhere else, and the part of the stage between it and the fighters is hidden.
  • Fighters lit as on the console: each stage now lights the fighters the way the original does, with its own light colour, its ambient light and its light from below. Fighters look brighter and take on each stage's mood, and Yoshimitsu's katana glows again. With REMASTER on, they keep the stage's own sun and take the console's light on top.
  • Effects on every GPU: on some computers the sparks, glows and dust showed as speckled squares. They now draw cleanly everywhere.
  • More blood: a clean hit's blood spray is larger and fuller.
  • Unlocking with Kazuya: finishing Arcade with Kazuya now earns the next hidden character, as with any character you haven't finished it with before. Before, his clears earned nothing, however often.

Online

  • Your name, at once: a name changed on ONLINE MODE's page now counts straight away, with no restart.
  • Into the fight together: before a game says it's ready, it draws the fight's first pictures hidden behind its own loading screen, so a slow phone does its slow part there. Then each player keeps the loading screen until the other is actually playing. Nobody looks at a frozen stage anymore.
  • No more failed starts: a phone busy loading the fight is now waited for up to 30 seconds instead of 5. Before, the match could end as a lost connection right after THE MATCH IS STARTING, and the two players were offered each other again and again. If a match ever ends early, the waiting room now says why.
  • A sound when an opponent is found: the game's own challenger sound plays as the offer appears.
  • The match's line at the foot: the line with your opponent, the round trip and the delay now sits at the bottom of the screen.
  • Playing older versions: 0.7.7 plays 0.7.6 players as before. It also plays 0.7.0 to 0.7.5 and 0.6.5 to 0.6.7 as before. The new start-of-match waiting works on your side whoever you play.

Good to know

  • Hit knockback: we checked the remake's knockback field by field against the original game's own logic. It is the original's, exactly.
  • Unlocking characters: works as in the original. Each Arcade win with a character you haven't finished Arcade with before earns the next hidden character, Kazuya included now. Finishing again with the same character earns nothing, so switch characters to unlock them all. Playing a lot also earns them over time.

Nothing needs extracting again. The game's assets are imported again the next time you build or run it (npm run dev, npm run desktop, npm run android), which it does by itself.

Sidesteps the right way round from the other side, and offers that wait for both players.

Online

  • Sidesteps from the other side: when both players pick the same side, one of them sees the fight from the other side of the stage. Their sidesteps used to go the wrong way: tapping up (or L2) brought the fighter toward them, tapping down took it away. Now a tap up goes into your screen and a tap down comes out of it, whichever side you see the fight from. The same goes for each character's moves into and out of the screen. Holding up still jumps and holding down still crouches.
  • No offer on the versus screen: you're offered an opponent only once your waiting fight has been on your screen for a second, never while the versus screen or its fade is still showing. A slow phone gets the time it needs to show the fight, and the card is there for the whole countdown.
  • Into the fight together: both players stay on the versus screen until both games have the fight loaded. Before, if one game took long to load, the other went into the fight after three seconds and stood frozen there. Now it keeps waiting as long as it hears the other is still loading.
  • Playing older versions: the sidestep fix and the wait need both players on 0.7.6. Against 0.7.0 to 0.7.5 you play their matches as before (AS 0.7.0 over the picture), and against 0.6.5 to 0.6.7 without the walls, as before.

Nothing needs extracting or importing again. Build the app again from your disc (npm run desktop, npm run android) for it to carry this. No release carries an app: one holds the game's data, and is built on your machine for your own devices.

Watch the fights going on online.

Spectate

  • SPECTATE: a new entry on ONLINE MODE lists the fights under way on the server, each with its two players, their win streaks and how many are watching. A scrollbar appears when there are more fights than fit.
  • Join any time: pick a fight and you see it right where it is, whatever the round, then follow it live with its music and sound. SPECTATING shows at the bottom of the screen.
  • Watch only: press Start for a menu to keep watching or leave back to the list. A rematch carries on in the same view, and when the fight ends you're back on the list.
  • Who can be watched: fights between two players on 0.7.5 or later, on a server of 0.7.5 or later. Each game sends the server its own presses for those watching. If you run your own server, update it (npm run relay, or the server/ folder).
  • Still plays with older versions: matches play exactly as before, so 0.7.0 to 0.7.5 play each other, and 0.6.5 to 0.6.7 without the walls.

Nothing needs extracting or importing again. Build the app again from your disc (npm run desktop, npm run android) for it to carry this. No release carries an app: one holds the game's data, and is built on your machine for your own devices.

A steady camera from the other side, and fair double KOs online.

Online

  • The other side, steady: when both players pick the same side, one of them sees the fight from the other side of the stage. In 0.7.3 that camera floated and drifted even with both fighters standing still. It now moves exactly as the normal camera does, turning when it turns and resting when it rests, just from the other side.
  • Double KOs: a double KO still gives each player a round. But if that takes both of you to match point at once, the match used to go to the host every time. Between two 0.7.4 players it's now a DRAW GAME. Against an older version the old rule stays, so the two games always agree.
  • Still plays with older versions: 0.7.0 to 0.7.4 play each other, and 0.6.5 to 0.6.7 without the walls.

Nothing needs extracting or importing again. Build the app again from your disc (npm run desktop, npm run android) for it to carry this. No release carries an app: one holds the game's data, and is built on your machine for your own devices.

No more mirrored worlds online, and win streaks where Versus shows them.

Online

  • The other side of the stage, not a mirror: when both players pick the same side (both LEFT, or both RIGHT), one of them used to see the whole fight flipped like a mirror, with backwards signs and reversed costumes. Now that player sees the fight from the other side of the stage, the camera across the fighters' line, as Tekken's own online play does it. Your fighter is still on your side, the controls follow the picture, and nothing is mirrored any more. You even get to see the stage's other side.
  • WINS where Versus shows a streak: a player's streak of wins now shows as WIN:1 or WINS:3 at the bottom of the screen under their side, the way offline Versus shows a streak, instead of next to their name.
  • Still plays with older versions: only the drawing changed, so 0.7.0 to 0.7.3 play each other, and 0.6.5 to 0.6.7 without the walls.

Nothing needs extracting or importing again. Build the app again from your disc (npm run desktop, npm run android) for it to carry this. No release carries an app: one holds the game's data, and is built on your machine for your own devices.

Fairer matchmaking online, and typing on phones made easy.

Online

  • Offered only when ready: an opponent is now proposed only while both of you are in the waiting room's fight and playing. Not while one of you is still loading, choosing a character, in Practice's menu, or has the page out of sight.
  • A no is not forever: after turning someone down, the two of you are kept apart for 30 seconds, then offered each other again if neither has found anyone else. Before, two players left waiting were never offered each other again.
  • A late yes still counts: a yes pressed as the bar runs out, or slowed by the connection, no longer lets the offer expire and start over.
  • Still plays with older versions: 0.7.0 to 0.7.2 play each other with walls, and 0.6.5 to 0.6.7 without. A player of 0.7.1 or older is offered as before. If you run your own server, update it (npm run relay, or the server/ folder) for these offer rules.

Phones

  • Typing and pasting: on a phone or in the Android app, entering the server's address, your name or a room code shows a text box at the top of the screen. Tap it for the phone's keyboard, long-press it to paste, and press Done to keep it.

Nothing needs extracting or importing again. Build the app again from your disc (npm run desktop, npm run android) for it to carry this. No release carries an app: one holds the game's data, and is built on your machine for your own devices.

@Emulator000 Emulator000 released this 18 Oct 14:21

Online matches that no longer get stuck at the start, and 0.7.1 can play 0.6.x players again.

Online

  • No more stuck starts: after one match, the next opponent you were paired with could get stuck before the fight. Their screen stayed black (or on the versus screen) while yours showed WAITING FOR them, forever. Both games now start every pairing fresh and go into the fight together.
  • A frozen match ends: if the other game stops playing (a page reloaded, a tab put away), the match now ends after five seconds as THE CONNECTION WAS LOST, instead of waiting forever.
  • Play 0.6.5, 0.6.6 and 0.6.7 players: 0.7.1 is matched with them too. Those matches are played without the walls, whatever REACHABLE WALLS says, and the line over the picture says AS 0.6.5, NO WALLS. Between 0.7.x players the walls are on as before. This needs a server of 0.7.1 or later: if you run your own, update it (npm run relay, or the server/ folder).

Waiting room

  • RESET leaves the waiting room: choosing RESET in the waiting room's practice went to the mode menu while still searching, so the next mode you played showed SEARCHING FOR AN OPPONENT at the bottom (and an opponent found would have interrupted it). It now goes back to ONLINE MODE with the search cancelled.

Nothing needs extracting or importing again. Build the app again from your disc (npm run desktop, npm run android) for it to carry this. No release carries an app: one holds the game's data, and is built on your machine for your own devices.

Source only: this release carries no game files, no remastered assets, and no Tekken 3 Arcade ROMs, board dumps, extracted files or converted assets. The game is played from an image of your own Tekken 3 disc (USA, SLUS-00402), read on your machine; the README says how.

@Emulator000 Emulator000 released this 18 Oct 12:52

Walls you can actually reach, a newer engine, and Hwoarang's belt where it belongs.

Reachable walls

  • The stage stands still: in the original the stage slides along with the fighters, so nobody ever reaches a wall. With REACHABLE WALLS (in REMAKE OPTION) the stage stays put, a little bigger than before, with walls all around.
  • Pinned and splatted: back a fighter into a wall and they're stuck there until they get out (block, duck, sidestep, or a throw that swaps sides). Knock them into it hard and they splat: a crumple on their feet, or a drop straight down the wall in the air, open for a short combo. Once a combo, and the third clean hit after the splat puts them down.
  • The camera stays in the ring: it's kept inside the walls, and when it can't be (fighting along a wall, or a knockout shot from above), the bit of stage in the way is hidden so you always see the fight.
  • On by default online, off by default offline: set it to ON to play with walls in Arcade, Versus, Team Battle, Time Attack, Survival and Practice, or OFF to turn them off in the online matches you host. ?quick&walls=on tries it straight away. Tekken Ball, Tekken Force and the attract demo keep the original stages.

Online

  • 0.7.0 plays 0.7.0: walls change how a match plays, so 0.7.0 players are matched with each other, not with 0.6.x.

Engine and look

  • DriftEngine 4.14.0: hands and blinks are cheaper to draw, and on WebGL2 (where there's no WebGPU) the remaster no longer leaves trails behind moving fighters.
  • Hwoarang's belt: in the attract intros the ends of his belt sank into his trousers for a moment, as they do on the original disc. They're now kept clear of his legs, as they already were in fights. CLOTH ORIGINAL still shows them as the original does.

Apps

  • Desktop: a movie that falls behind catches up in the desktop app, where it used to jump back to its start.
  • Android on Windows: npm run android no longer needs our workaround for the SDK folder; the engine's packager handles it.
