URP Underwater Effects

Welcome to the URP Underwater Effects Wiki.

URP Underwater Effects is a modular underwater rendering framework built for the Universal Render Pipeline (URP).

What began as a simple fog effect has evolved into a collection of underwater rendering systems built on top of:

  • RenderGraph
  • Unity Volumes
  • Automatic Effect Discovery
  • Shared Rendering Resources
  • Custom Underwater Effects
  • Transparent Depth Support

Features

Built-In Effects:

  • Underwater Fog
  • Caustics
  • Refraction
  • Water Line Refraction
  • Volumetric Sun Shafts
  • Transparent Depth Integration

Framework Features:

  • Custom Underwater Effects
  • Automatic Effect Discovery
  • Effect Ordering
  • Shared Resource Generation
  • Volume Driven Configuration
  • RenderGraph Rendering

Custom Underwater Effects Tutorial

Shared Resources

The framework exposes reusable resources that can be consumed by custom effects.

Currently available:

_WaterLineMask
_TransparentDepthTexture

Transparent Depth Support

Transparent objects can participate in underwater rendering using:

TransparentDepthSettings

Available settings:

  • Thickness
  • Opacity

This allows glass, shields, portals, force fields, domes, and other transparent objects to participate in underwater fog.

Philosophy

The framework is designed around reusable rendering resources and independent effects.

Effects should share data whenever possible rather than recomputing the same information multiple times.

This keeps the system extensible while minimizing rendering overhead.
