CleanBrowse 1.0.0 — Out of beta 🎉

CleanBrowse has left beta — 1.0.0 is the first full release. The engine was rebuilt to be faster and lighter, the whole app now speaks six languages, and SafeSearch is finally under your control.

Thanks to everyone who ran the beta and sent feedback — this release is shaped by it. 💚

✨ Highlights

🗣️ Speaks your language

The full app — settings, alerts, everything — is now localized in six languages: English, العربية (Arabic, right-to-left included), Français, Español, 中文, and Deutsch. CleanBrowse follows your system language automatically.

🔍 SafeSearch, your rules

A new Configure Safe Search panel lives behind the ⚙️ button in the menu bar popover. Decide exactly how strict search should be:

  • Toggle SafeSearch enforcement per engine — Google, YouTube, Bing, and DuckDuckGo
  • Or flip them all at once with a single switch
  • Enforcement still happens at the IP level across ~190 country-code domains, so it can't be bypassed in the browser

⚡ Faster & lighter

The DNS engine was rebuilt for 1.0:

  • Faster DNS resolution across all query types (A, AAAA, HTTPS/SVCB)
  • Lower memory footprint
  • Minimal battery impact — the app stays invisible in your menu bar until you need it

  • Smoother, more reliable SafeSearch experience across search engines
  • Refreshed and reorganized settings view
  • Signed builds with hardened release pipeline

🗑️ Removed

  • The quit riddle is gone. Quitting the app no longer requires solving a riddle. A proper, opt-in "Protect me from myself" lock is in development for an upcoming release — see the roadmap below.

📥 Install

  1. Download CleanBrowse.dmg below, open it, and drag CleanBrowse.app into Applications
  2. Launch it — the shield appears in your menu bar
  3. Enter your admin password once to apply the blocklist; the DNS proxy activates automatically

Requires macOS 14 (Sonoma) or later. Upgrading from a beta? Just replace the app in Applications — your custom blocked domains are preserved.
