v1.1.0 — Searchable PDFs
New: searchable PDF output
Turn scans and phone photos into PDFs with an invisible, selectable text layer. The page looks exactly the same, but you can now search, select and copy its text. Pages that already contain real text are copied through untouched, so digital PDFs aren't re-OCR'd.
- API:
POST /v1/searchable-pdf(returnsapplication/pdf) - CLI:
freeocr pdf scan.pdf -o scan-searchable.pdf - MCP tool:
make_searchable_pdf - Web UI: new Searchable PDF button
Requires the Tesseract engine (included in the Docker image).
Also new
- Demo GIF in the README, recorded from the real web UI extracting the bundled sample documents (fictional companies); re-record with
scripts/record_demo.py
Everything from 1.0.0
OCR with Tesseract or RapidOCR; 8 auto-detected document types (invoices, receipts, bank statements, purchase orders, payslips, resumes, IDs, forms); line items and transactions; totals check; entities including IBAN, VAT and GSTIN; YAML templates; PII redaction; JSON/CSV/Excel/Markdown export; folder watch mode; web UI; CLI; MCP server.
Install
docker run -d -p 8000:8000 ghcr.io/ethos6/free-ocr-api:latest
# or
pip install "free-ocr-api[rapidocr] @ git+https://github.com/Ethos6/free-ocr-api@v1.1.0"CI: all 22 tests pass with Tesseract on Python 3.10, 3.12 and 3.13. The pure-Python RapidOCR job passes 21 of them and skips the searchable-PDF test, which needs Tesseract. Full notes: CHANGELOG.md
