NewAmp 2.6.0 draws the track's waveform on the seek bar, adds a colour editor that floats over any view and a sidebar you can rearrange, and fixes Apple Lossless playback in .m4a files. Several defaults changed, listed below.

Highlights

  • The seek bar draws the playing track's waveform for local files, and hovering it shows the time. Settings > Performance has a Seek bar row that turns the waveform off. In the main window, the mouse wheel over a seek bar seeks 5 seconds per notch.
  • The colour editor stays open over any view, the fullscreen visualizer included. Pressed buttons have their own label colour (Text on accent in the Skin Workshop), so changing Background no longer leaves them unreadable. A skin you replace by importing or dropping a file goes under Previous skins, with an Undo.
  • Sidebar groups collapse, and Customise or a right-click lets you hide and reorder items. Streaming, which contains Radio, starts collapsed and opens once you add a music server or a podcast feed, or open Radio. Quick Play still reaches Radio.
  • Apple Lossless in .m4a, .m4b and .mp4 now plays with crossfade, playback speed, A-B loop and CUE sheets, and shows as ALAC instead of AAC after the next scan.
  • Track tables have a column chooser, Move to Recycle Bin (Trash on macOS and Linux) is in the track right-click menu, and library search ignores case and accents, so bjork finds Björk. Ratings and play counts stored in file tags are imported for new and changed files only.
  • The volume wheel stops at 100%, and holding Shift takes it past. In the main window, double-click a volume slider for 100%. On the Retro TV deck the volume knob works and the channel knob changes track.
  • Visualizer: three new scenes, a right-click menu in the fullscreen view, and Eviland now reacts relative to each track's loudness. If the GPU drops its graphics context, Eviland picks up again when the context comes back, or switches to a 2D picture if it doesn't, instead of freezing.
  • The window opens where you left it, on the view you left, as soon as it is ready. It used to wait a fixed 5.6 s behind the splash; now the splash shows for at least 0.6 s and only as long as the window is still loading.
  • On macOS the Dock has a menu, the NewAmp menu has Settings (Cmd+,), and Cmd+Left/Right and Cmd+Up/Down skip tracks and change the volume. See Known issues.

Behaviour that changed

  • Shuffle with Repeat off now stops after every track has played once. Repeat all starts a new cycle.
  • On a fresh install, Playlist, Mix and Tag columns are hidden until you turn them on from Columns. The DJ OK / NO DJ toggle and the TAG button live in those columns. Saved layouts are kept.
  • The Library opens on the track list. The stats and health report is a one-row summary that starts collapsed.
  • The album cover overlay in the visualizer is off until you turn it on.
  • In the fullscreen visualizer, Lite is Shift+L and Auto-VJ is Shift+V, so L loves the track and V stops playback as they do everywhere else.
  • A saved Eviland seed code gives the same scene in new colours. Some also differ in more than colour, because the liquid effect and the waveform now show up in different looks.
  • Closing the window on macOS hides it and the music keeps playing. Cmd+Q quits.
  • The sleep timer pauses instead of stopping, so a podcast keeps its place.

Thanks

Thanks to u/mojsterr, who tested 2.5.0 and 2.5.1 on a Mac mini and sent detailed reports. The column chooser, Move to Recycle Bin, the Retro TV knob, the visualizer's right-click menu, the waveform seek bar, the floating colour editor, the rearrangeable sidebar and the fixes to the volume wheel and to the text on pressed buttons all came out of them.

Known issues

  • None of the macOS changes (closing to the Dock, the Dock menu, the Settings menu item, the Cmd shortcuts, the decks' traffic lights, fullscreen without a new Space) have been run on a Mac yet. Reports welcome.
  • If the volume wheel still misbehaves on your Mac, Settings > Support Diagnostics has a Copy input log button. It copies the last 200 wheel events and what the app did with each one.
  • Ratings and play counts stored in files are read when a file is new or changed. Files already in your library aren't re-read, and there is no rescan button for them yet.
