Problem

When a page (e.g. the Spend page) fails to return data, it gets stuck in a failed "Something went wrong" state with no way for the user to recover. There's currently no pull-to-refresh or retry affordance, so the user is stranded on the error page.

Proposed Solution

As a quick fix, add a Retry button to the "Something went wrong" empty/error state so users can re-attempt the failed request without reloading the whole app.

This is intended as a lightweight interim improvement. A more holistic pull-to-refresh framework was discussed but would require a broader, more consistent approach across the app, so it's intentionally out of scope here.

What is the root cause of that problem?

The "Something went wrong" state is rendered by BlockingView, which only supports an icon, title, subtitle, and an optional inline link — it has no action-button affordance. So both places that show this error render a dead end with no way to re-run the failed request:

• Spend page (the reported example): SpendOverTimeSectionContent.tsx:72-85 renders a BlockingView when state === ERROR.
• Full Search page: Search/index.tsx:922-940 renders FullPageErrorView, which is a thin wrapper around the same BlockingView.

The data itself is recoverable — the error is just an errors object on the search snapshot, and re-firing the search clears it (the search action's optimistic data resets the loading/error state). There is simply no UI to trigger that retry.

What changes do you think we should make in order to solve the problem?

1. Add an optional CTA button to BlockingView (e.g. onButtonPress?: () => void + buttonTranslationKey?: TranslationPaths). When both are provided, render a Button below the subtitle. Because FullPageErrorView already wraps BlockingView, thread the same two props through it so both call sites can opt in. Reuse the existing common.tryAgain ("Try again") label, or add an errorPage.retry key if design prefers "Retry".

2. Wire retry on the Spend page: the search call already lives in onConfigChanged inside useSpendOverTimeData.ts:69-89. Extract that search({queryJSON, searchKey, offset: 0, isOffline, isLoading: false, shouldUpdateLastSearchParams: false}) call into a reusable function, return it from the hook as retry, and pass it as onButtonPress on the ERROR BlockingView.

3. Wire retry on the full Search page: pass an onButtonPress to FullPageErrorView that re-fires search for the current queryJSON. Skip the button (or keep it disabled) when the error is an invalid query (isInvalidQuery / errorPage.wrongTypeSubtitle), since retrying an invalid search won't help — only offer retry for the generic errorPage.subtitle failure.

This is scoped to a Retry affordance only, matching the issue's "lightweight interim improvement" intent — the broader pull-to-refresh framework stays out of scope.

Notes on confidence & design

• Confidence is medium-high: the two render sites and the BlockingView gap are confirmed by code; the retry mechanism (re-calling search) is the same path already used on mount, so it's low-risk. The exact button styling/placement should be confirmed with the Design reviewer already assigned.
• Consider hiding the button while offline (the Spend page already shows a separate OFFLINE state) so retry only appears for genuine server failures.
• Since BlockingView is shared app-wide, gating the button behind the new optional props keeps every other consumer unchanged.

The shared error surface FullPageErrorView (src/components/BlockingViews/FullPageErrorView.tsx:39-65) renders only an icon, title and subtitle via BlockingView (src/components/BlockingViews/BlockingView.tsx:104-190) — neither component exposes an action/CTA prop, so callers cannot attach a retry handler. As a result, the consumer that renders this error for the Spend page — src/components/Search/index.tsx:928 (<FullPageErrorView ...>) — has nowhere to plug in a re-fetch, even though Search already knows how to re-issue the search request. A second "Something went wrong" surface in the Spend widget (src/pages/home/SpendOverTimeSection/SpendOverTimeSectionContent.tsx:72-83) calls BlockingView directly and likewise has no retry affordance. The missing UI affordance is purely a component-API gap, not a data/fetch bug.

What changes do you think we should make in order to solve the problem?

1. src/components/BlockingViews/FullPageErrorView.tsx (props type at lines 14-37 and component at 39-65): add optional onRetry?: () => void and optional retryButtonText?: string props; when onRetry is provided, pass them through to BlockingView.

7. Add a light unit/interaction test that mounts FullPageErrorView with shouldShow and an onRetry spy, asserts the "Retry" button is rendered and that pressing it invokes the spy.

What alternative solutions did you explore? (Optional)

Building a generic pull-to-refresh wrapper across the app — intentionally rejected in the issue as too broad for this interim fix.

The Spend page uses the Search screen. When a Search API request fails, Search sets hasErrors from searchResults.errors and then intentionally stops its focus/mount fetch effect from calling handleSearch again while hasErrors is true, so the failed snapshot stays terminal until something else changes the query or the app reloads (https://github.com/Expensify/App/blob/main/src/components/Search/index.tsx#L255-L255, https://github.com/Expensify/App/blob/main/src/components/Search/index.tsx#L373-L409). The only UI rendered for that state is FullPageErrorView, but that branch passes only the title/subtitle and no recovery action, and FullPageErrorView itself currently exposes no retry/action prop to the underlying blocking view (https://github.com/Expensify/App/blob/main/src/components/Search/index.tsx#L923-L936, https://github.com/Expensify/App/blob/main/src/components/BlockingViews/FullPageErrorView.tsx#L14-L39). The Search action already has the right recovery behavior because a new search() call optimistically clears errors and marks the snapshot loading before the API response resolves, but the error page has no way to trigger it (https://github.com/Expensify/App/blob/main/src/libs/actions/Search.ts#L684-L703).

What changes do you think we should make in order to solve the problem?

Add an optional action API to FullPageErrorView, such as buttonText/onButtonPress or similarly named props, and render a primary Button below the existing subtitle when those props are provided. Keep the prop optional so existing error/not-found usages are unchanged. Add an errorPage.retry translation key with the text Retry instead of reusing the attachment-specific retry string.

Then update the Search hasErrors branch to show that button only for real failed requests, not for CONST.JSON_CODE.INVALID_SEARCH_QUERY, because retrying an invalid query would just repeat the same validation error. The button handler should call the existing handleSearch prop with the current queryJSON, currentSearchKey, offset, shouldCalculateTotals, prevReportsLength: filteredDataLength, and isLoading: false, matching the parameters Search already uses for its normal fetch path (https://github.com/Expensify/App/blob/main/src/components/Search/index.tsx#L402-L409). This keeps the fix inside the Search source of truth and reuses the parent handleSearchAction, which already resets the response status and calls search() (https://github.com/Expensify/App/blob/main/src/pages/Search/SearchPage.tsx#L107-L118).
