BREAKING CHANGES

  • Replace tika with markitdown for file reading; tika and pypdf are no longer dependencies
  • Remove fix_pdf, with_metadata, and file-slice syntax (file.txt[0:10]) kwargs from file engine
  • Remove RetrievalAugmentedConversation, DocumentRetriever, TextContainer, and TextContainerFormatter
  • File engine now uses explicit backend kwarg: 'standard' (default) or 'markitdown'

  • New markitdown-based file engine supporting PDF, DOCX, PPTX, XLSX, HTML, EPUB, images, audio, and more
  • as_box=True kwarg for Symbol.open() to parse JSON/YAML/TOML/CSV into Box objects with dot-access
  • LLM-powered image captioning and PPTX slide descriptions via _SymaiVisionClient adapter
  • URL support in file engine for RSS feeds and web pages (backend='markitdown')
  • files optional dependency group: pip install 'symbolicai[files]'
  • Parallel file reading via FileReader(workers=N) using ProcessPoolExecutor
  • FileReader.get_files() now discovers all supported formats (was limited to PDF/MD/TXT)

Changed

  • Shell RAG indexing uses Indexer + Conversation directly instead of DocumentRetriever
  • test_imports.py now reads pyproject.toml dynamically instead of maintaining a hardcoded list
  • Move sentencepiece and sentence-transformers from core to hf optional group

Removed

  • tika, pypdf, natsort, pandas, scikit-learn, torchvision, PyYAML, colorama, pathos, pydantic-settings, httpx, pydub, pycryptodome, pymongo, playwright, llvmlite from core dependencies
  • legacy/ directory (old notebooks, examples, and test files)
  • TextContainerFormatter from symai.formatter
  • DocumentRetriever from symai.extended

Fixed

  • Shell missing --conversation-style CLI argument
  • Temp file leak in vision adapter for base64 image decoding
  • prepare() backslash handling now uses Path.as_posix() instead of stripping backslashes
