AppSandbox 0.1.4 Ubuntu provisioning test 1
Pre-releaseWarning
This is an unofficial test build. It is not an official AppSandbox release and is not intended for production use.
These fixes were mostly vibecoded with Codex using GPT-5.6 Sol Extra High. They were tested but have not received an independent human code review.
The replacement iso-patch.exe is not Authenticode-signed. Windows or security software may warn about or block it.
Purpose
This prerelease allows users to test the Ubuntu fixes proposed in:
- Pull request #120 — Fix Ubuntu "Installing Linux" hang and desktop runtime
- Issue #87 — VM stuck on installing
It fixes a reproduced failure where an Ubuntu VM started successfully but remained indefinitely on Installing Linux because its required build dependencies were not installed and the guest agent could not be compiled.
Included fixes
- Resolve offline build dependencies using Ubuntu's release, updates, and security package indexes
- Include
build-essential, DKMS, matching kernel headers, and required agent dependencies - Fail dependency prefetch when required packages or matching kernel headers are unavailable
- Restore the Linux capabilities required by
snap-confine - Fix Firefox and App Center failing to launch
- Disable GTK's problematic Vulkan backend while leaving OpenGL available
- Fix missing text in Ubuntu Settings
- Preserve the DRM framebuffer ID before releasing plane data, preventing stale or blank display frames
Build details
- Based on the official AppSandbox
0.1.4Windows x64 release - Fix source commit:

EzYDark:fix/ubuntu-runtime - Pull request: jamesstringer90/appsandbox#120
AppSandbox.exeandappsandbox_core.dllare unchanged official binaries and retain their original signatures- The replacement
iso-patch.exeis locally built and unsigned
The test helper pins Linux guest-source downloads to:
ezydark/appsandbox@c2833e6ecb8be3675cc22f691686847f14500a9c
This ensures the VM receives the framebuffer fix from the same commit as the provisioning, Snap, and GTK fixes. The source pin is specific to this test package and is not part of pull request jamesstringer90#120.
Tested configuration

- 4096 MB guest RAM
- 32 GB virtual disk
- NAT networking
Verified results
- A newly created VM completed
Installing Linux - The guest agent connected successfully
- Required kernel headers and DKMS modules were installed
- Agent, audio, display, and input services were active
- Ubuntu Settings rendered its text
- Firefox launched
- App Center opened
- The desktop accepted input and continued updating
- The downloaded
appsandbox-display.cexactly matched commitc2833e6 - The release ZIP extracted successfully and all 44 files matched their original hashes
Installation
- Download and extract the complete ZIP.
- Run
AppSandbox.exefrom the extracted folder. - Create a new Ubuntu VM.
- Keep internet access available while AppSandbox downloads the pinned guest source and Ubuntu package dependencies.
- Do not use an existing VHDX when testing provisioning because these repairs run during VM creation and first boot.
Known limitations
- This build is intended for Ubuntu testing; Windows guest provisioning is unchanged.
- Existing Ubuntu VMs are not automatically repaired.
- The replacement
iso-patch.exeis unsigned. - The issue jamesstringer90#87 reporter used different hardware and must retest before that specific case can be considered confirmed.
- This package should remain marked as a prerelease.
