💜 Before You Try FOU v2.5.0

Hey! Thanks for checking out FOU!

Before you jump in, I wanted to mention a few things that might help you have a smoother experience.

⏳ First-Time Loading Might Take Around 60 Seconds

When you add your first coin or open FOU with a saved portfolio, you might notice that the prices take a little while to appear.

Don't worry if it takes around 60 seconds on the first try!

FOU fetches live cryptocurrency prices through a backend that I'm currently hosting on a free service. When nobody has used it for a while, the server goes to sleep to save resources.

The first request wakes it back up, which can take some time. Once it's awake, adding coins and refreshing prices should generally be much faster.

Your saved coins are stored locally on your computer. The delay is mainly from fetching their latest prices.

If things still aren't loading after a minute or two, please check your internet connection and try Refresh again.

🛡️ A Quick Note About Windows Security

FOU v2.5.0 is currently unsigned. I've already submitted an application to SignPath Foundation for code signing, but approval is still pending.

I downloaded the published Windows version on another laptop and tested it successfully. It launched and worked without any Windows security warnings.

However, some computers might still show a Windows SmartScreen warning because the executable isn't signed yet.

If you've downloaded FOU from this official GitHub Release, reviewed the project, and trust it, Windows may give you the option More info → Run anyway.

Some Windows 11 systems with Smart App Control might block the application entirely. I don't recommend turning off system-wide security protection just to run FOU.

📦 Installing FOU on Windows

It's pretty simple!

  1. Download FOU-v2.5-Windows.zip.
  2. Extract the entire ZIP into a folder.
  3. Open the extracted folder and run FOU.exe.

Make sure to keep the _internal folder alongside FOU.exe, as it contains files the application needs.

You don't need to install Python separately.

🐧🍎 A Note for Linux and macOS Users

Hey! Just a small heads-up before you download FOU.

I've included Windows, Linux, and macOS versions in this release. All three were successfully built through GitHub Actions, and the Linux package also passed some additional source and file-integrity checks.

However, there's one thing I want to be honest about: I've only been able to properly launch and test the Windows version.

I don't currently have access to a Linux or Mac computer for hands-on testing. So while the other builds are available, I can't promise they'll work perfectly on your system.

If you're using Linux or macOS and something doesn't launch or behave as expected, please don't judge the entire project based only on that experimental build. I'd really appreciate it if you could check out the demonstration video in the README to see how FOU works on Windows.

And if you discover a problem, please open a GitHub issue. Your feedback could help me get those versions working properly!

If you're reviewing FOU for Stardust, feel free to evaluate the Windows version and the demonstration instead. I understand if you need to skip hands-on testing because your operating system isn't fully supported yet.

FOU v2.5 — Desktop GUI

FOU started as a small Python terminal project while I was learning to code. Over time, it grew into a desktop cryptocurrency watchlist with its own themes, characters, and reactions.

This is the first GUI release of FOU, built for Hack Club Stardance.

What's new?

  • Three complete themes: FOU DEFAULT, THE FOOL, and VOID.
  • Three companions: FOU, MR. FOOL, and NØXAR, each with six reactions.
  • Live cryptocurrency prices powered by CoinGecko through the FOU backend.
  • Add, remove, refresh, and locally save your coin watchlist.
  • Automatic price multipliers for tiny-priced coins like BABYDOGE.
  • Responsive layouts, themed coin logos, and decorative frames.
  • A Help button linking to the project README.

Downloads

Choose the package for your operating system:

  • Windows: FOU-v2.5-Windows.zip
  • Linux: FOU-v2.5-Linux.tar.gz
  • macOS: FOU-v2.5-macOS.zip

Windows installation

Extract the entire ZIP file and open FOU.exe. Keep the _internal folder alongside the executable. You do not need Python installed.

Important: The Windows executable is currently unsigned. Microsoft SmartScreen or Smart App Control may warn or block it. Please don't disable Windows security just to run FOU. I'm working toward code signing through SignPath Foundation.

The Windows GUI has been tested successfully. Linux and macOS packages passed automated builds but haven't yet been runtime-tested on those operating systems.
