ROLLER-X 0.2.1
Team deathmatch, sound, and a map to fight across
ROLLER-X 0.2.1 fills in the arena mode that 0.2.0 opened with: a second way to
play it, machines that sound like machines, computer pilots that can find their
way across a map that is not one flat piece, and the map that needed them to.
Team deathmatch
A third game mode: sixteen machines, eight a side. The MECH row of the briefing
flies your side and the OPPONENT row flies theirs, so it reads as a duel with
fifteen other machines in it. Each side fights in one colour — yours is the
paint you picked, theirs is drawn for the match — and a round goes to the side
rather than to whoever happened to be left holding the arena, so a match of
eight a side can actually be won.
FACING WORLDS
A new arena, built from the model of a map you already know: two bases at
opposite ends of a long drop, joined by two causeways that climb to a crest in
the middle with a hole between them and one crossing at the pinch. Leaving your
base is uphill and falling back to it is downhill. The keeps are hollow — drive
in, fight in the courtyard, and leave by either doorway.
Fall in and you fall, rather than simply being deleted where you stand.
Sound
Every machine now runs Whiplash's engine loop, retuned each frame the way the
race game retunes a car's: pitch off the throttle, a wobble that grows as the
armour goes. Skids, landings, blasts, hits and collisions are the retail
samples, panned and attenuated from wherever the camera is standing. The
briefing has the options music under it.
Computer pilots
They get round things now. A pilot that walks into a building goes round it
instead of leaning on it, and turns a boost mid-burst to come round cover from a
direction you were not watching — the crossing step, which the machines have
always been able to do and the pilots never used.
On a map whose ground does not join up they follow the arena's own routes, the
same way the race game's drivers follow a racing line: aim at a point along the
line, a distance ahead that grows with speed, and steer for it. Before this, two
sides on FACING WORLDS spent the whole round pacing their own halves four
hundred metres apart. They also know a drop when they see one, whether it is a
pit, the edge of the map, or ground that simply falls away.
Fixes and smaller things
- Switching targets in survival no longer takes the game down.
- Entering survival as a spectator no longer locks up, and a spectated match
draws and finishes. - Both triggers together fire the centre weapon within a window rather than on
the same instant, which makes it usable on a pad. - Computer machines take a colour each, so a crowded arena is legible.
- The ZIZIN's gun reads as a gun, and its mortar shells travel.
