03 - Geography & Environment

Status: BIOME SILHOUETTES & PALETTE DRAFTED

The Topography of Chaos (Core Rule)

Under the influence of Chaos (Free Will), the land refuses to settle. It resists erosion, grows in structurally impossible directions, and creates sudden, violent transitions instead of gradual blends. The world doesn't feel eroded; it feels decided.

The Cartographer's Palette (Map Colors)

In-universe maps are drawn with grim, natural inks. The palette rejects bright "Orderly" fantasy colors in favor of muted, bruised, and sickly tones that reflect the Silent Hill/Chaos aesthetic.

  • Forests: Bruised Olive / Black-Green (#2C3525)
  • Plains: Pale Bone / Ashen Oat (#D1C7B7)
  • Mountains: Bruised Slate / Rust-Streaked Indigo (#4A4352)
  • Deserts: Chalky Ochre / Dull Copper (#B88645)
  • Swamps: Stagnant Bile / Coagulated Umber (#594A25)
  • Tundra: Cyanotic Frost / Pale Corpse-Blue (#92A6B5)
  • Volcanic: Scorched Maroon / Dried Blood (#4A1C1C)
  • Caverns: Void Violet / Ink-Black (#111115)

Biome Silhouettes

1. Forests: The Strangling Labyrinth

Trees grow toward each other, intertwining and strangling. Multi-layered canopy. Abrupt forest edges. Trees lean outward at the border. Fog is trapped inside the canopy, never clearing. Dense, claustrophobic. Ambush predators. Multi-layered threats (above, below, beside).

2. Plains: The Frozen Sea

Undulating, wave-like swells. Sudden stone spurs and fissures. Grass grows in patchwork directions. Rivers cut violent gashes then vanish into sinkholes. Fog is mobile, erasing the horizon in fast, thick walls. Long-range stalking threats. Environmental hazards (fissures).

3. Mountains: The Shattered Spines

Isolated clusters or single impossible pillars. Hollow mountains with cavern openings. Fractured, multi-summit peaks. Overhangs and arches. Fog pools in valleys, turning peaks into islands in a sea of white. Verticality, flying/climbing predators, natural dungeon entrances.

4. Deserts / Wastelands: The Shattered Mirror

Sharp, jagged sand ridges. Twisted rock formations with exposed sediment at wrong angles. Flat mirror-patches next to chaotic spikes. Wind carves labyrinthine tunnels. Fog is dry dust, rising from the ground. Burrowing predators, sand traps, natural mazes.

5. Swamps / Wetlands: The Drowning Breath

Water pulses with a tidal rhythm. Drowning trees with exposed, grasping roots. Shifting ground (solid earth next to bottomless mud). Fog rises constantly from warm water. Sound is muffled. Ambush predators from the water. Submerged paths.

6. Tundra / Frozen Wastes: The Shattered Mirror (Cold)

Jagged, crystalline ice spikes. Geothermal oases in the permafrost. Wind howls through ice tunnels. Ice is clear in places, revealing things frozen below. Fog is frozen, crystalline, distorting distances. Cold is the primary enemy. Things frozen in the ice are lore.

7. Volcanic / Geothermal: The Bleeding Earth

Clusters of erupting vents or perfect circular calderas. Lava erupts in geysers and flows through tunnels. Obsidian formations like frozen lightning. Ground is unstable. Fog is ash and steam, warm and sulfurous. Sky permanently choked. Environmental hazards everywhere.

8. Caverns / Underground: The Inverted World

Vast cathedral spaces with impossible geometry. Stalactites grow in all directions. Underground rivers flow in circles. Walls pulse faintly. Entrances look like wounds in the earth. Fog is bioluminescent or thermal. Deepest caves have no fog—just formless Darkness.

Hydrology (The Stubborn Rivers)

Water refuses to follow the path of least resistance. Braided deltas, subterranean loops, violent geysers, and sudden flash floods. Water systems are inherently dangerous to traverse.

The Scars of the Cleansing

  • The God-Wound: The physical location where the Barrier was ripped from the earth. A miles-wide tectonic nightmare of warped stone and magnetically wrong earth. A unique biome unto itself.

Dev Rule: Controlled Chaos

While silhouettes are jagged and chaotic, walkable paths must be mechanically clear for Godot's NavigationRegion3D and AI companions. Visual chaos ≠ mechanical chaos.

Scope Check (Pending)

Which 3-5 biomes will be in the actual game? We cannot build all eight at full fidelity.
