droplet 1.0.0 — no hub needed

droplet works without a hub. Install it on two devices, pair them with a four-digit code, and they send files, messages, the clipboard and rings straight to each other over your Wi-Fi. No account, no cloud, nothing in the middle — and no server of your own to keep running.

Downloads

Android 8+ droplet-android.apk (1.6)
Windows 10/11 droplet-windows.exe (1.0.0)
Linux run the agent

Both will warn you when you open them: droplet isn't signed by Microsoft or published on Google Play yet. On Windows click More info → Run anyway; on Android allow installs from your browser once. Every file's SHA-256 is in SHA256SUMS.txt, and all the source is here.

What's new since v0.9.0

  • The Android app no longer needs a hub. First run asks: pair directly with your devices, or use a droplet hub. Either way it opens on a native home screen — your devices with their live connection, one tap each for files, a message, a ring, the clipboard and the presentation remote.
  • One pairing screen with the four digits in plain sight, and They match / They don't match.
  • A TV remote in the phone, pairing with an Android TV or Google TV directly, so it works with the hub off.
  • A hub can be forgotten without losing the devices you paired directly.
  • The Windows app was rebuilt in C#/.NET, and it pairs directly too.

Verified

Paired a phone and a laptop with no hub anywhere, then sent files and messages both ways, rang, and shared the clipboard — on a real Redmi running MIUI, and in 172 automated tests against a real Linux peer.

Known

  • Notification mirroring still needs a hub.
  • With the hub unreachable but Tailscale on, the phone wrongly says "Tailscale is off".
  • A device you pair with is trusted for everything; per-device permissions are coming.
  • iOS and macOS don't exist yet.

Preview release. droplet is a local-first way for your phone and computers to share files, messages, the clipboard and remote control, like KDE Connect, with an optional always-on hub for when a device is off, and Tailscale for away from home.

This preview hasn't been tested on every platform yet (details at the end). Please report problems as issues.

What's in it

  • Hub (a Linux machine, or Docker): the web app for any browser. It includes files, chat, notifications, the Hub tab (media, clipboard, commands, find a device) and a Google/Android TV remote.
  • Devices talk directly (the mesh): the Android, Windows and Linux apps find each other on the Wi-Fi and connect with mutual TLS, so they keep working when the hub is down. Pair them directly with a matching four-digit code. The hub is optional.
  • Remote control: a touchpad, keyboard, presentation remote (with a motion laser pointer), media, lock and screenshots, across Linux, Windows and Android. It also gives SMS and file browsing for the phone from a computer.
  • Local-first security: a new device on your Wi-Fi must be allowed in from one of yours, with a matching code, or with the PIN.
  • Bluetooth mouse & keyboard: the Android app acts as a Bluetooth HID device for any computer or TV, with nothing installed on the other side.

Downloads

File For
droplet-windows-0.9.0.exe Windows 10/11: the new native app (C#/.NET, WPF). A single file; run it.
droplet-android-1.4.apk Android 8+: allow installs from your browser when asked.
SHA256SUMS.txt Checksums for both files.

The Linux agent installs from your own hub: curl -fsSL http://<hub>:8000/agent/install.sh | sh.

Getting started

  1. Run the hub on an always-on Linux machine: see Run (venv), Run (Docker) or Run as a service.
  2. Open the hub in a browser on your phone or computer, name the device, and it's in. A new device on the Wi-Fi is asked to wait for approval from one of yours.
  3. Install the apps (above) for background features and direct device-to-device links.

Windows: security warning

The exe isn't code-signed yet (Microsoft Store packaging is coming), so Windows SmartScreen shows "Windows protected your PC": click More info → Run anyway. If Defender flags it, see windows/DEFENDER.md. You can check the file against SHA256SUMS.txt with Get-FileHash droplet-windows-0.9.0.exe.

Known limits of this preview

  • Not yet run on real hardware:
    • the Windows app (it passes 71 Windows tests in CI);
    • the Android app's direct-connection features on MIUI;
    • the TV remote with a real TV.
  • Browsers still go through the hub; the direct mesh is for the native apps.
