v1.10.0 — Slide-deck PDFs
Added
- Slide-deck PDFs for AI Create. Attach a PowerPoint-exported PDF and the add-on rasterises each page to an image. For every card it generates, the source slide is automatically attached to the card's image field — and a new slide gallery ("🖼 Slide" on each card in the review screen) lets you pick or swap exactly which slide(s) go on a card.
- PDF reading on any AI provider. Previously only Claude could read attached PDFs. Because the pages are now rendered to images, slide-deck PDFs work on Gemini, OpenAI and Ollama too — and image-only slides (diagrams, scanned pages) are read as images rather than skipped. Claude still reads the PDF directly for the best text fidelity; other providers receive the page images. A confirmation appears before sending a large deck so you stay in control of token use.
- Built entirely on Anki's bundled Qt PDF support — no new dependencies and nothing to install.
v1.9.1 — Guideline regions, leaner defaults, rebuilt sources dialog
What's new in 1.9.1
Added
- Guideline regions for AI Create — source grounding now ships three curated, reputable sets: Australia & WA, United States (CDC / USPSTF / AHA-ACC / IDSA / ADA / ACOG / NCCN / AAP / ACR / KDIGO / AGA / AAN / APA / GOLD / GINA / Radiopaedia …), and International (WHO / Cochrane / BMJ Best Practice / NICE / UpToDate / ESC / ERS / EASL / ESMO / PubMed …). Pick the region whose citations the AI may use.
- Region picker in the setup wizard — the Create page asks which guideline region to use (or "None" to turn grounding off).
- Manage your own preset — "Manage sources…" can load any region's built-in set as a starting point; add/remove your favourites and save it as a reusable Custom set.
Changed
- Rebuilt the "Manage guideline sources" dialog — wider window, fields that fill the row (Name/URL/Specialties were being clipped), a preset loader, and a clearer "Reset to preset" button.
- Leaner defaults for fresh installs — the QBank heatmap, the weakness/stats dashboard, and the Update-by-Tag tool now start off (turn them on in Settings when wanted). Images and grounding stay on; existing users keep their settings.
Install: download ankisstant-1.9.1.ankiaddon below and double-click it (or Anki → Tools → Add-ons → Install from file).
Note for existing users
The setup wizard re-opens once after this update so you can pick your guideline region. It won't nag again afterwards, and your existing settings (enabled tools, decks, etc.) are preserved.
v1.9.0 — Create images, Browse search terms, Update by Tag
What's new in 1.9.0
Added
- Image previews in the Create review screen — each card needing a picture shows candidate thumbnails; click one to attach it. Visual cards are auto-detected; manual per-card search/browse still works on any card.
- In-Anki visual image browser + more sources — choose the embedded browser's engine (DuckDuckGo / Google / Bing / custom
{q}URL), set thumbnails-per-card, and add an Azure Bing key. "🖼️ Auto-image" is a per-batch toggle. - Update by Tag — bulk-reprocess existing notes to your current format/guidelines as new copies (originals untouched), via the selected AI-Create profile and source grounding.
- Bundled Malleus Q&A notetype — self-contained Front/Back/Source notetype + matching AI-Create profile, seeded automatically (idempotent, fail-open).
- Source grounding — optionally inject a curated AU/WA clinical-guideline citation allow-list so cards cite real URLs, not hallucinated slugs (topic mode). Global/per-notetype/per-batch controls; editable registry; optional live fetch.
- Atomicity control in the quality pass — cap independent clozes per note before flagging (default 2), enforced across prefilter, grader, and generator.
Changed
- Auto-tagging snaps to your own tag tree instead of inventing synonyms (no more Cardio vs Cardiology).
- Better AI Browse search terms — knows Anki ANDs space-separated words (favours ~2-word anchor+discriminator), uses the deck's vocabulary (cytokines/drugs/eponyms) over prose, expands shorthand like
Th1→T helper, and decomposes relational inputs (X = Y, "causes", "associated with").
Fixed
- Image downloads work again — browser-shaped user-agent + Wikipedia Referer + retry fixes Wikimedia 403s; one shared 3-worker pool ends thread storms / frozen review screen; buttons show "(no preview)" instead of going blank.
- Handled errors no longer look like crashes — logging writes to a rotating
user_files/log instead of stderr (which pops Anki's error dialog); setdebug_loggingto mirror to console.
Install: download ankisstant-1.9.0.ankiaddon below and double-click it (or Anki → Tools → Add-ons → Install from file). See CHANGELOG.md for 1.8.0/1.8.1 history.
v1.4.0 — Per-type custom field schemas
Highlights
Each Knowledge Gap type now owns its own list of inputs. The KG detail pane builds itself dynamically from the active type's schema.
Default type schemas
- MQ (Missed Question) — concept, stem (HTML + paste-screenshot), system, subsystem, topic, QBank source, notes
- KG — notes
- LO (Learning Objective) — learning objective, anki tag (autocomplete), notes
Field kinds
text— single-linelongtext— multi-linehtml— rich text with screenshot paste (same editor QBank Capture uses)url— single-line with an Open buttontag— single-line with Anki tag autocomplete
Editing the schema
Settings → Knowledge Gaps → Edit type. Add, remove, rename, recolour, reorder fields. Each type also has its own colour and description.
Workflow gain
QBank Capture now writes straight into the MQ schema's keys, so screenshots and stems flow into the KG detail pane verbatim — and onward to Create-with-Claude as supplemental context.
See CHANGELOG.md for the full 1.4.0 entry.

v1.3.0 — KG types + grey-on-done
Highlights
typefield on every Knowledge Gap. Defaults: MQ (Missed question — from QBank captures), KG (manual / generic), LO (from Analyse-LO results). Configurable in Settings → Knowledge Gaps.- Type chips below the status chips on the KG page for one-click filtering.
- Clear completed button — Done / Dismissed items stay visible (greyed, italic, at the bottom) until you sweep them away.
- Default filter "Active" so nothing disappears mid-workflow.
