Flare

A modern, lightning-fast file sharing platform built for self-hosting

✨ New Features and Changes

Flare 2.1 is here! This one's mostly about making your library easier to organize and nicer to browse, with a few long-requested additions along the way.

  • Folders and sharing: nested folders, bulk moves, uploads straight into a folder, and optional share links for collections. Everything stays in All files too.
  • Tags: private labels, bulk tagging, and automatic rules based on filenames or text extracted from images. Upload profiles can apply tags as well.
  • Image gallery: full-screen browsing with previous/next, zoom, keyboard controls, and swipe. You can also group your library by week, month, or year.
  • macOS uploads: ready-to-import iTake configurations for screenshots and recordings. Setup for existing screenshot tools is simpler too, without manually creating an API key first.
  • Profile and Settings: related controls are grouped together, Copy link always gives you a plain share-page URL, and rolling builds have clearer version and update information.
  • Fixes and upkeep: changing your URL ID no longer breaks stored-file access, blank optional vanity URLs save correctly, and API clients work with PR previews. Dependencies have also had a security refresh.

📚 Flare has docs!

The new handbook covers everyday use, hosting, administration, and the API, with a searchable feature explorer, screenshots, walkthroughs, and interactive examples.

It's part of the development workflow: code changes must ship with their docs, and automated checks verify coverage, links, API references, and browser behavior. The site publishes automatically with its version and source commit, so you can see what you're reading. Interactive API examples stay in your browser and don't contact your instance.

With the new dev workflows in place, Flare updates may start coming a bit more often. Keep the suggestions coming!

❤️ Thanks

Huge thanks to @sp-ec for the organization request and the URL-ID, vanity URL, and copied-link reports; @ThesiiNCey for pushing for folders alongside tags; and @XCraftTM for the gallery and date-grouping ideas. Thanks also to @thebeeee for cheering on the organization work, and everyone testing Flare and sharing feedback. ❤️

⬆️ Updating

Back up your database and uploads first. The Docker image runs migrations automatically. Folders start unshared; a shared folder includes only its direct public files, not private files or subfolders. Tags stay private.

The old Copy format preference is gone. Custom clients should use rawUrl or downloadUrl when they need those instead of a share page. Changing a URL ID changes its public URLs, so copy fresh links afterward.
