First public release of G8 Volume OSD, a small Windows 11 tray app that shows a volume popup when a hardware knob changes the volume. It's built for the Creative Sound Blaster G8, whose knob changes the Windows volume without showing the Windows popup, but it works with any playback device.

Features

  • Compact Windows 11-style overlay: volume bar, percentage and mute state. It matches light/dark mode and your accent color.
  • Experimental: use the real built-in Windows 11 volume popup instead (tray → Use Windows volume popup (experimental)).
  • Never takes focus or blocks clicks, so it's safe in borderless games. Exclusive-fullscreen games may hide it.
  • Follows the default playback device, or a specific device you pick. It waits for that device to come back if it's unplugged.
  • Optional launch at login. No admin rights, no background polling, ~0% idle CPU.

Requires Windows 10 2004+ or Windows 11, x64.

Install

  1. Unzip G8VolumeOSD.exe to a folder you'll keep, for example %LOCALAPPDATA%\Programs\G8VolumeOSD\.
  2. Run it. It lives in the notification area (tray); right-click the icon for options.
  3. Optional: tray → Launch at login.

Windows SmartScreen may say "Windows protected your PC" because the exe isn't code-signed. Click More info → Run anyway.

About the experimental Windows-popup mode

Windows has no API to show its own volume popup, so this mode briefly nudges the volume one step down and back up to make the shell open it. While you keep turning, it repeats about every 1.2 s so the popup stays open. Side effect: the level can snap to the nearest even percent, always in the direction you're turning. Mute changes still use the custom overlay. The default overlay mode never writes any audio setting. Details are in the README.
