Flunkey breaks down the friction between thinking and typing, bringing lightning-fast dictation, contextual AI answers, and inline text transformations directly to every application you use. ✨ Core Features & Workflows

Flunkey works globally across your entire operating system (Slack, Teams, Word, Outlook, or your browser) using three simple hotkeys:

  • 🎙️ F8 | Universal Dictation
    Stop typing and start speaking. Hold F8 to dictate your thoughts. Release to watch Flunkey instantly clean up verbal filler and drop polished text directly into your active cursor position. Double-tap F8 to toggle a hands-free continuous dictation mode.

  • ⚡ F9 | AI Side Overlay
    Instant knowledge without context switching. Hold F9 to speak a query, and release it to see your answer stream instantly into a sleek sidebar panel. Perfect for quick research, coding help, or maintaining a continuous local chat.

  • 🪄 F10 | In-Place Transformation
    Highlight any messy snippet of text, hold F10, and command the AI to fix it. Change tones, fix grammar, shorten paragraphs, or translate languages on the fly. The old text is automatically swapped out with the fresh AI-written version.

🛡️ Privacy, Performance & Open Source Architecture

  • Bring Your Own Key (BYOK): Flunkey gives you full infrastructure control. Plug in your own API keys from Groq, OpenAI, Google Gemini, or OpenRouter to pay exact wholesale costs with zero middleman markups.
  • Custom Local Models: Users can also bring and use their own Ollama models within the app, giving you complete flexibility to run locally-hosted models of your choice.
  • Local Whisper Transcription: In the Models page of the app, there's an option to download one of three different Fast Whisper model variants. These models run completely local, can be downloaded directly within the app, and enable offline speech-to-text transcription with zero cloud dependency.
  • 100% Local Control: There are no Flunkey cloud accounts, central servers, or data telemetry pipelines. Your keys are sandboxed securely in the Windows Credential Manager, and your history stays strictly on your local machine.
  • Lightweight Performance: Engineered natively using Tauri v2, Rust, and React 19, resulting in an incredibly small installer footprint (~14 MB) and minimal RAM utilization.

📦 Getting Started

  1. Download and run the lightweight Windows setup installer (64-bit Windows 10/11 supported) from downbelow.
  2. Input an API key from your preferred provider (we highly recommend Groq for near-zero latency transcription and generation).
  3. Note: This version is not code-signed, so Windows SmartScreen (Microsoft Defender SmartScreen) may display a warning when you try to run the installer. If you see a "Windows protected your PC" screen, click "More info" and then "Run anyway" to proceed.
  4. Try holding down F8 anywhere on your desktop to send your very first spoken message!
