What it does

  • πŸ“ Create, edit, and delete snippets/prompts
  • 🧩 Mark each entry as a prompt or a code snippet β€” token estimates show only for prompts (v2.3.0)
  • 🎨 Syntax highlighting for 35 languages (via highlight.js), plus a Markdown preview for prompts (v2.13.0)
  • πŸ§ͺ Prompt variables β€” {{placeholders}} you fill in when copying, with remembered values and live highlighting (v2.4.0, v2.15.0)
  • 🏷️ Tag your snippets, with tag autocomplete, and a global tag manager to rename / merge / delete a tag everywhere (v2.15.0)
  • πŸ”Ž Search by title/description, tags, model, or all fields; filter by language, tag, model, kind, or favorites; sort by newest / most-used / recently-used / A–Z (v2.5.0)
  • ⌨️ Command palette (Ctrl/⌘-K) and keyboard navigation to find, open, and copy without the mouse (v2.5.0, v2.12.0)
  • πŸ’Ύ Saved searches (views) β€” store a filter combo and re-apply it in one click (v2.10.0)
  • πŸ•“ Prompt history & diff β€” every edit is versioned; preview, diff, and roll back (v2.7.0, v2.8.0)
  • πŸš€ "Run in…" launcher β€” copy a prompt and open it in ChatGPT / Claude / Gemini / AI Studio or your own target (v2.15.0)
  • ⭐ Favorite / pin the prompts you use most so they float to the top
  • πŸ€– Model / target metadata β€” tag prompts with the model they're for, and filter by it
  • πŸ”’ Token & character counts so a prompt fits your model's context window
  • πŸ“ˆ Usage tracking and an insights panel β€” see what you copy most, recently, or never (v2.9.0)
  • πŸ“‹ One-click copy, duplicate, bulk multi-select actions, undo-after-delete, and a Trash you can restore from or empty (v2.9.0, v2.14.0, v2.4.0, v2.11.0)
  • πŸ” Import / export β€” single prompts or the whole library (merges by id), drag-and-drop import (JSON / .md / .txt), and Markdown (.md) export (v2.4.0, v2.9.0, v2.12.0)
  • πŸ—‚οΈ Grid or list view, a hover preview, and a full-screen detail view for each prompt
  • πŸ“Š Library stats β€” total prompts, languages, and tags at a glance
  • πŸŒ— Light / dark theme (follows your system by default) and accent themes (v2.10.0)
  • ⚑ Fast local SQLite storage β€” no account, works fully offline
  • πŸ” Optional two-way sync across your computers via a self-hosted server you control β€” incremental, offline-capable, with deletes that propagate (desktop, v2.2.0; see Syncing)
  • πŸ—„οΈ Pick your database location on first launch, and whole-database backup & restore with opt-in backup-on-launch (desktop, v2.6.0)
  • πŸ” Sync token stored in your OS credential store (Keychain / Credential Manager / Secret Service) (desktop, v2.6.0)
  • πŸ”„ Built-in auto-update that installs new versions in place without touching your database (desktop)
  • πŸ–₯️ One codebase, two runtimes: a Next.js web server or a native Tauri desktop app

Two ways to run

SnipVault ships as a single frontend that adapts to where it runs:

  • Web app β€” a Next.js server with REST API routes, storing data in ./data/snippets.db via better-sqlite3.
  • Desktop app β€” a Tauri shell where the same UI calls Rust commands, storing data in your OS's local data directory via rusqlite.

See Architecture for how this dual-runtime design works.
