This is a heavily modified version of the Quest 64 recompilation by Rainchus.
The game is rebuilt as a native Windows program, with a hardware renderer, widescreen, gamepad support, a randomizer and an Archipelago connector.

This was built with Claude vibe coding, a lot of testing and help from the Quest 64 community.

No game code or data is included. You supply your own Quest 64 (US) ROM,
which the program asks for on first run and keeps in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Quest64Recompiled\.

YAML Builder - https://fuzzynessuk.github.io/Quest64-Recomp/

What's in the download

  • Quest64Recompiled-1.9.0-Windows.zip: Quest64Recompiled.exe and the assets it needs, plus q64music.exe, the music converter: it turns a MIDI, an .ootrs pack or an OoT sequence into the format the game wants, for the custom music feature.
  • quest64.apworld: the Archipelago world. Put it in Archipelago/custom_worlds.
  • Quest64Recompiled.yaml: the player template. Fill it in and put it in Archipelago/Players.
  • YAML builder: or build your yaml on a web page instead, with every option, its explanation on hover, and a Save button. Archipelago YAML Builder.url in the zip opens it.

Unzip anywhere and run it. Settings, saves and logs live in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Quest64Recompiled\, not next to the exe, so this folder can be replaced wholesale when updating.

Press Esc (or Select/Back on a controller) in game for the config menu. F5 opens the Cheats tab and F6 the Randomizer tab.

Features

Randomizer

  • Port of Merrow: spells, items, chests, drops, gifts, wingsmiths, Lost Keys, Shannon hints, table and stat shuffles, and its quality-of-life and door options
  • Enemy Randomizer with logic: every area gets a monster set, and every monster is scaled to the area it appears in
  • Spirit Location Randomizer
  • Chest Location Randomizer
  • Boss Spells (hangedmandesign/merrow#6)
  • Shuffle Boss Order, with the Grand Abbott telling you which boss is in which arena
  • Full RGB colour spectrum for randomized cosmetics

Archipelago

  • The port speaks the Archipelago protocol itself, so there is no separate client to run
  • Chests, gifts, spirits, bosses and monsters killed are checks
  • Mammon's World can be gated behind the Eletale's Book, beating every boss, beating every kind of monster, collecting Torn Pages, holding the orbs (all four, or as many as you choose), or a mix of them; the Grand Abbott tells you what your seed needs
  • Each boss can be held out of the game until his "Soul" is found
  • The seed's settings come from the yaml: randomizer, enhancements and cosmetics
  • With the Enemy Randomizer on, the apworld decides where every monster is, so enemy checks are always in logic; Ensure All Enemies Appear makes every kind findable
  • Orbs / Boss Items and Wings: normal, shuffled, or progressive so they always arrive in story order
  • Open World: every gem-locked door, boat and teleporter open from the start
  • Extra Wings in Pool: up to two more of each pair
  • Wings can always be used indoors
  • Archipelago logo on the title screen while connected
  • DeathLink
  • Page Hunt goal: find the Torn Pages of the Eletale's Book, in your own game, anywhere, or only in other games
  • Traps: Death, HP, MP and Ice Traps in place of filler, in the style of Ocarina of Time's Ice Traps

Tracker

  • Item tracker: the six boss items, the Boss Souls you have found, and the six wings, with how many of each you hold
  • Check tracker: every check by area (each room filed under the area you walk into it from), found ones lit and the rest greyed out, with the area you are in opened; also shown in the Tracker tab
  • Notes window to type in, resizable from its corner
  • Windows can be moved and resized with the mouse, then locked in place
  • Options for titles, borders, wings and each window's background

Models

  • Play as Leonardo, with his own cape; the Leonardo you meet becomes Brian

Game Modes

  • Real Time Combat: real time battles instead of turn based

Inbuilt Mods

Enhancements

  • Repel: switch random battles off and on, as in Pokemon
  • JP Healing Amounts (Healing Lv2)
  • JP 5-turn Magic Barrier
  • JP Boss MP Rewards: bosses raise max MP as well as max HP
  • JP custom animations for stat level ups
  • Double Experience: level, stat, or both
  • Fast MP Recovery
  • Show spell learnt
  • Stack Items: consumables and wings stack in the bag
  • 150% speed Faster Walking
  • Speedrun Timer
  • Exit From Anywhere (Controls menu)
  • Reset button (Controls menu)

Fun

  • One Hit KO
  • N64 Mode

Audio

  • Main, music and sound effect volume, changed while you play
  • Music and sound effect shuffling, switched on and off while you play
  • Randomise the current area's music, from your custom music, the game's own, or both
  • Custom music and fanfares
  • Show the name of the song playing

Layout

  • Notification bar
  • Adjust the HUD
  • Remove the black borders
  • Minimap with bindable zoom controls, placed and sized with the HUD; shows chests, spirits and gift NPCs, and the Checks Guide marks doors that lead to checks
  • Hide Compass

New in 1.9.0

Menus reorganised, live audio, an orbs portal, and a YAML builder on the web. Use the new apworld and yaml (apworld 1.10.0) for the orbs portal; seeds made with the 1.9.0 apworld still connect and play as before.

  • YAML builder: a page at https://fuzzynessuk.github.io/Quest64-Recomp/ with every option of the yaml, grouped like archipelago.gg's option pages, each option's explanation on hover. Open a yaml to change it, or start from the defaults, and Save. Archipelago YAML Builder.url in the zip opens it.
  • Mammon's World Portal: orbs. Two new choices: all_orbs (the Earth Orb, Wind Jade, Water Jewel and Fire Ruby in your bag) and some_orbs (orbs_required of them, 1 to 4). With progressive boss items it is that many Progressive Boss Items. The door's notice counts your orbs, and the Grand Abbott says what you need.
  • The Grand Abbott's welcome. In an Archipelago seed his opening speech says "Welcome to Quest 64 Archipelago" and then what your seed needs, as he does when you talk to him in the monastery.
  • Menus reorganised. The tabs are now General, Controls, Graphics, Sound, Archipelago, Randomizer, Enhancements, Layout, Mods and Cheats.
    • Archipelago has its own tab, and the launcher has an Archipelago button that opens it.
    • Randomizer has a tab for each section (Spells, Items, Monsters, Stats, World, Lost Keys, Cosmetics), shown while the randomizer is on. Stats has a Default button.
    • Layout has HUD, Minimap, Notifications and Tracker tabs.
  • Sound, all live. One page: Main, Music and Effects volume, then the music and sound effect options. Everything on it takes effect while you play, and the music playing switches as soon as its song changes. New: Randomise current map (custom only, the game's own, or a mix).
  • Controls. The buttons have Quest 64's names (Attack/Open/Select, Cancel/Camera Turn, Item Menu, Zoom In/Out, C Up/Down/Left/Right). Exit Spell and the minimap zooms have their own section at the top while those features are on, and can be put on the D-pad, which Quest 64 itself does not use (its rows are gone).
  • Tracker. A Tracker on/off switch, with Windows (locked/unlocked) under it. A Boss Souls section in the item tracker, with a Show Boss Souls option. Checks are now listed under the area they are really in: a house on Holy Plains is Holy Plains, not Dondoran, and West Limelin and Brannoch are areas of their own.
  • Fix: a second Earth Orb. With progressive boss items, Solvaring gave an Earth Orb of his own on top of the one from the item pool. In a seed a boss no longer hands over his own item: his check gives the seed's.
  • Fix (randomizer): with Shuffle spells on, a flying monster could end up casting Magic Barrier and could not be beaten (also in the updated 1.8.1 download).
  • yaml: Giftsanity and Wings now say what the wingsmiths do in each case.

New in 1.8.1

Minimap, tracker and Real Time Combat fixes. Only the program has changed: the 1.8.0 apworld and yaml are the same and are attached again here.

  • Minimap: checked things leave the map. Opened chests, spirits you have picked up and gift NPCs you have talked to are no longer drawn. A gift NPC counts as talked to whether or not you are playing an Archipelago seed. This is kept with each save file, from the first talk after updating, so gift NPCs you talked to in an earlier version show until you talk to them again.
  • Minimap: the Checks Guide switch covers every door hint. With it off, doors to gift NPCs no longer get a "?" either.
  • Minimap: the zoom stays after a battle. Going through a door to another room still starts zoomed out.
  • Minimap: Minimap size and Checks Guide now sit above the Hide options under Layout.
  • Tracker: locked windows have an outline unless Hide Borders is on. Hide Titles now hides the titles while the windows are unlocked too; drag a window by its edge instead.
  • Real Time Combat: a boss now attacks about every 3.5 seconds, from the start of one attack to the start of the next. Ordinary monsters are unchanged.
  • Fix (randomizer): with Shuffle spells on, a flying monster (Wyvern, Pixie, Will-o'-Wisp and the rest) could end up casting Magic Barrier. Brian's staff cannot reach a flyer, so it could not be beaten at all, and with monsters as checks that check was lost. Flying monsters can no longer get Magic Barrier. (Added to the 1.8.1 download on 6 October.)

New in 1.8.0

New options for the boss items, the wings and the open world, and logic that follows the story. Use the new apworld and yaml: the options below are only in them. Seeds made with the 1.7.0 apworld still connect and play as before.

  • Orbs / Boss Items (boss_items, replaces shuffle_orbs):
    • normal: each stays on its boss or Shannon, as in the game.
    • shuffled: shuffled with everything else.
    • progressive: a "Progressive Boss Item" for each, always in story order: Earth Orb, Wind Jade, Water Jewel, Fire Ruby, Eletale's Book, Dark Gaol Key. When Mammon's World Portal replaces the Book there are five, and the Book is skipped.
  • Wings (wings, replaces wingsmith_wings):
    • normal: the wingsmiths hand over their wings.
    • shuffled: one of each pair in the item pool.
    • progressive: six "Progressive Wings", each the next pair in town order (White, Yellow, Blue, Green, Red, Black).
    • Extra Wings in Pool (wings_in_pool) now adds extra copies on top, in every mode.
  • Open World (open_world): the doors, boats and teleporters the four gems lock are open from the start. It is its own option now. Boss Souls no longer opens the world by itself.
  • Repel is on by default in the yaml.
  • Fix: logic follows the story. Every check is now in logic only from the point the story reaches it. Brannoch Castle, Brannoch and Baragoon Moor are among the last things a seed needs, and could be sphere 1 before: every spirit and gift NPC counted as reachable from the start, and so did some chests. With Open World and Boss Souls, an area behind a gem counts as open once the boss who drops that gem can be beaten. Without Souls, it still waits for the gem.
  • Fix: wingsmiths in a seed. A wingsmith only ever hands over his own town's wings, and only once per save. Before, with giftsanity off, he gave them again whenever they were not in your bag, and with the gift shuffle he could hand out another town's pair. With Wings shuffled or progressive, no NPC hands over wings at all: they come only from the item pool.
  • Fix: a crash could happen when Real Time Combat's diagnostics read the game's memory.

New in 1.7.1

Real Time Combat fixes and a crash fix for the whole game. Only the program has changed: the 1.7.0 apworld and yaml are the same and are attached again here.

  • Fix: crashes when too much is on screen. The game builds the picture for each frame from a list of drawing commands, and it had room for only 2,560 of them, with no check on running out. Rock Shower in Blue Cave (a crash in the original game too), some of Hard Mode's attacks used together, and busy Real Time Combat battles went past the end and wrote over the next frame's data, which crashed the game. The list now has room for about 65,000 commands, and room for the positions of models on screen grows from 512 to 832. This is part of the game and always on; there is no setting.
  • Crash log: if the game ever crashes, it writes crash.txt (readable in Notepad) and crash.dmp to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Quest64Recompiled\. Please send both with any crash report.
  • Test mode (Cheats, under Brian's stats): one button sets HP and MP and their maximums to 999, Defense 50, Agility 100, Fire 40, Earth 50 and Water 50.
  • Fix: a battle no longer ends early with monsters still standing. After two kills the game could decide every enemy was down and end the fight; it now checks every monster in the battle. Monsters further down the line also keep attacking after the first one falls.
  • No hit stun: getting hit no longer stuns Brian or a monster, so a hit does not cancel the attack or spell in progress and the fight flows without pauses. Damage, the damage number, the screen shake and the hit sound are unchanged, and a hit that kills still plays out as before.
  • Spell menu during monster spells: a monster's spell still on screen (the Wind attacks in Blue Cave, for one) no longer stops you opening the spell menu, attacking or using items. Brian now only waits for his own spells to finish.
  • No dodge freeze: when Brian dodges an attack he no longer stops to play the evade animation, which also refused the spell menu at the moment of the dodge. "Miss" and the dodge sound still show.

New in 1.7.0

Real time battles, a new playable character and a Repel. Use the new apworld and yaml for the new options; seeds made with the 1.6.0 apworld still connect and play as before.

  • Real Time Combat (Enhancements > Game Modes, yaml real_time_combat): battles in real time instead of turn based, as in Elden Ring or Final Fantasy VII Remake. There is no turn order: Brian can move, attack, cast and use items whenever he likes, with no ring to stay inside, and the camera stays on him. Every monster acts on a clock of its own, separately from the rest - its own rest of three seconds or more after each of its actions, then it comes at you again, however many are already at it. It is not meant to be fair. Winning and running off the edge of the battle area still end the battle as usual. Works with Hard Mode too.
  • Play as Leonardo (Enhancements > Models, yaml character: leonardo): play as Leonardo, the blond knight of Normoon and Brannoch Castle, with his own cape, moving with all of Brian's animations. His model is kept in memory of its own, so leaving Normoon no longer crashes the way the old cheat code did. The Leonardo you meet in the game becomes Brian in his place, and his speech box and greeting say Brian.
  • Repel (Enhancements > Quality of Life, yaml repel): a new item, in your bag when the game starts. Use it in the field to switch random battles off, as in Pokemon: Brian casts, its icon appears over his head, and the item reads ACTIVATED until you use it again to switch it off. Saved with your game.
  • Mammon's World Portal: three new choices - all_pages, bosses_and_pages and bosses_monsters_pages. The pages are Torn Pages, placed and counted as for a Page Hunt (pages_required, page_placement), and need goal: mammon, since the run still ends with Mammon. The Grand Abbott tells you what your seed needs, and the portal's notice counts your pages.
  • Fix: changing a song in the Audio tab during a battle could crash the game when the battle ended. The area's music now only picks up where it left off if it is still the same song.
  • Fix: Stop after previewing a song no longer brings back a track the game has since moved on from (the battle theme in the field, for instance).

New in 1.6.0

Page Hunt, traps and a new item. Use the new apworld and yaml for the new options; seeds made with the 1.5.0 apworld still connect and play as before.

  • Page Hunt: a new goal, goal: page_hunt. The Eletale's Book has lost its pages: find pages_required of them (5 to 100) and the moment the last one is in your bag, the game fades into the credits and the goal is done. page_placement decides where they can be: quest64_only, all_games or other_games_only. Pages take the place of filler first, then wings, then Level Ups; if a seed has no room for them all, it will not generate and tells you why. The Grand Abbott tells you how many pages your seed needs.
  • Torn Page: a new item with its own icon in the item menu. Its description counts the pages you have found against the target, and it stacks with Stack Items.
  • Traps: traps sets how many filler items become traps, with the same choices as Ocarina of Time: no traps, normal, extra, mayhem, onslaught, a custom count or a custom percentage. Each kind can be switched on or off:
    • Ice Trap: Brian is frozen in the ice block of Ice Knife for five seconds, in the field or in battle, and cannot move, attack, cast, talk or open anything until it melts.
    • HP Trap: HP drops by half of max HP, never below 1.
    • MP Trap: MP drops by half of max MP.
    • Death Trap: Brian falls and goes back to his last save point. The most brutal kind, so it has its own amount: off, rare, normal, or an exact number. It waits until a won battle's rewards are in hand, like DeathLink.
    • A trap never lands mid-door or in a menu, and waits a moment after you arrive in a new area.
  • yaml defaults: DeathLink is first in the file. JP Healing Amounts, JP Magic Barrier, JP Boss MP Rewards, Fast MP Recovery, JP Stat Up Effect, Exit from Anywhere, Fast Walking, Text Improvements, Faster Areas, Wings Never Expire and No Enemy Drop Limit are on by default, under Enhancements. shuffle_orbs is off (the boss rewards stay on their bosses), wings_in_pool is none and wingsmith_wings is on by default.
  • Fix: the game no longer crashes on boot when a seed has Fast MP Recovery on (this fix was also put into the 1.5.0 download).

New in 1.5.0

Minimap update and DeathLink. Use the new apworld and yaml to get the DeathLink option; seeds made with the 1.4.0 apworld still connect and play as before, without it.

  • DeathLink: a new yaml option, death_link (off by default). When Brian dies, everyone else in the room with DeathLink on dies too; when one of them dies, Brian collapses and goes back to his last save point, the same as losing a battle. A death from the room waits until Brian is standing, walking or moving in battle - never mid-conversation, mid-door or in a menu - and is held from the moment every enemy in a battle is down until five seconds after the battle ends, with level-up and item windows pausing those five seconds, so a beaten boss and his item are never lost to one.
  • Fix: the minimap no longer loses the map. It was reading where Brian was going rather than where he is, so walking into an exit could draw the old map with the wrong room's outline. It now follows the room he is actually in and holds the last map through the transition.
  • Gift NPCs on the map: everyone who hands over an item is shown in green (grey once checked in an Archipelago seed).
  • Checks Guide: a door leading to an unopened chest, a spirit not yet taken, a gift NPC, or (in an Archipelago seed with giftsanity) a gift check not yet done is marked with a white ?. If that door is in a building's wall, the building's outline is drawn in heavier white. It looks through the whole building or area behind the door, and follows the randomizer when chests or spirits have been moved.
  • Hide spirits, Hide chests and Hide gift NPCs options. Plain doors are no longer drawn; only the ? doors show.
  • The minimap hides while one of the game's text boxes would cover it, and comes back when the box closes.
  • The minimap's options now have their own Minimap section on the Layout tab, above Notifications.
