CRS-000 | 1-1 Setup Tasks

In this activity, you will set up your course development environment (CDE). Complete these setup tasks before the end of Week 1 or before starting other repository activities.

Complete these setup steps in order.

  1. Set up your GitHub account
  2. Set up the STEM Computing Baseline
  3. Copy the course repo to your CDE
  4. Copy the course repo to your GitHub
  5. Connect with GC-STEM on GitHub

Set up your GitHub account

Tip

Already completed this step in a previous course? Skip it!

A free, personal GitHub account is {{required | recommended}} for this course. STEM students will use a GitHub account to store and manage course repositories throughout their degree program and showcase selected projects to prospective employers.

To set up your GitHub account, start at the step that best describes your situation:

  1. Create your GitHub account: I don't have a GitHub account.

  2. Configure your GitHub account: I already have a GitHub account, but haven't set it for up for SNHU coursework yet.

  3. Verify your GitHub account: I already set up my GitHub account for SNHU coursework.

Set up the STEM Computing Baseline

Tip

The SCB already set up on your computer? Skip this step.

To set up the STEM Computing Baseline (SCB) on your computer, follow the instructions for your operating system:

Note

If you are unable to install the required development tools on your device, see your Brightspace course for guidance or contact your instructor for alternatives.

Copy the course repo to your CDE

Do this step only once per device. The commands will return an error if the course repository already exists in your CDE.

Cloning a repository copies its files and history to your computer or virtual desktop. Your local copy will remain connected to the official course repository through a remote named upstream, allowing you to receive course updates.

Copy and run one of the following command blocks to a terminal in your CDE. For help using a terminal, see Terminal Basics.

  • Bash Terminal
mkdir -p "$HOME/Repos"
git clone --origin upstream https://github.com/GC-STEM/crs000.git "$HOME/Repos/crs000"
cd "$HOME/Repos/crs000"
  • PowerShell Terminal
New-Item -ItemType Directory -Path "$HOME/Repos" -Force | Out-Null
git clone --origin upstream https://github.com/GC-STEM/crs000.git "$HOME/Repos/crs000"
cd "$HOME/Repos/crs000"

Copy the course repo to your GitHub

Do this step only once per course repository. The commands will return an error if the course repository already exists on your GitHub account.

Use the GitHub CLI to create a private repository in your personal GitHub account and upload your local copy. This repository belongs to you and will store your coursework indefinitely.

Git connects your local copy to your personal repository on GitHub through a remote named origin. You will use origin to save your work to GitHub and upstream to receive official course updates.

Copy and run the following command block to a terminal in your CDE. For help using a terminal, see Terminal Basics.

gh api --method PUT user/starred/GC-STEM/crs000
gh repo create crs000 --private --source=. --remote=origin --push
git remote -v

Connect with GC-STEM on GitHub

Follow GC-STEM on GitHub to connect with peers and faculty.Do this step only once for your GitHub account.

GitHub is also a social network where you can share ideas, explore projects, and learn from others. GC-STEM is SNHU's official GitHub organization for its online STEM degree programs, offering opportunities to connect with faculty and fellow students.

Copy and run the following command block to a terminal in your CDE. For help using a terminal, see Terminal Basics.

gh api graphql -f query='mutation($id:ID!){followOrganization(input:{organizationId:$id}){organization{login}}}' -f id="$(gh api orgs/GC-STEM --jq .node_id)"
