Welcome to the IT 140 Module One: Setup Tasks Wiki.
The README files are the current step-by-step procedures. Use the Wiki when you want help understanding the tools, choosing an environment, learning more after setup, or troubleshooting a problem.
Start with the repository README: https://github.com/GC-STEM/it140-m1-setup-tasks
The student-facing setup guides follow this sequence:
- Start Here — review the main Setup Tasks README. https://github.com/GC-STEM/it140-m1-setup-tasks
- GitHub — create or configure the GitHub account information used by IT 140. https://github.com/GC-STEM/it140-m1-setup-tasks/blob/main/github/README.md
- Codio — configure and verify the Codio Virtual Desktop, the course reference environment. https://github.com/GC-STEM/it140-m1-setup-tasks/blob/main/codio/README.md
- Local Computer — if you want to work directly on a supported Windows, macOS, or Linux computer, follow that platform's README.
Course instructions beginning with Module Two assume that you have a GitHub account and access to a configured course IDE.
- Setup Options — Compare the CVD and local environments and choose where you want to work.
- What Is the Course IDE — Learn what software and extensions make up the course development environment.
- GitHub in IT 140 — Learn the difference between Git and GitHub, how IT 140 uses repositories, and where to learn more.
- Using the Setup Tasks Repository — Learn what a repository, README, and Markdown file are and how this repository is organized.
- Explore Your Course IDE — Find beginner resources for VS Code, GitHub, and Markdown after setup.
- Setup Problems and Support — Troubleshoot setup problems, collect useful diagnostic information, and find the right support channel.
You will see two related repositories during setup:
-
GC-STEM/it140-m1-setup-taskscontains the student-facing Module One setup procedures and setup support information. -
GC-STEM/it140contains the central course automation, course-wide repository information, and shared technical resources.
You do not need to manually clone the central it140 repository during normal setup. The automation obtains the files it needs. Assignment and project instructions will tell you when to clone a student work repository.
See Using the Setup Tasks Repository for more detail.
After your course IDE is configured and verified, return to your IT 140 course in Brightspace and continue with the remaining Module One activities.
