Team Beef's Quake2Quest on PC VR, over OpenXR. First release.

Download the zip, extract it anywhere, run Setup.bat once, then Play Quake II VR.bat.

Setup needs nothing installed

No Python, no downloads of ours. Setup runs on the PowerShell that ships with Windows, finds Quake II on Steam or GOG, and copies the game, whichever expansions you own and the soundtrack out of your own install — then builds the weapon wheel artwork from the same data. None of that can be distributed, which is why it is made on your machine.

It makes one network request, and only if it needs to: Team Beef's HD viewmodels, HD world textures and comfort mask are theirs and are not included here, so Setup fetches their Android release from their own release page and takes those three files out of it. About 169 MB, once. Setup.bat -Extras no skips it; the game plays the same with retail artwork.

What is in it

  • Quake II, The Reckoning and Ground Zero, with a game select page in front of Single Player
  • Menus and the attract demo in the world rather than on a flat panel — opening a menu does not drop you out of VR
  • A PC Options page — render resolution, anti-aliasing, view distance, HUD height, weapon alignment, and what the desktop window does
  • Recentre Height for playing seated: sit, select it, and that becomes your standing height
  • A desktop mirror worth streaming — right eye, borderless full screen, Alt+Enter to a window

Built against a 1:1 reference

Every PC addition was made only after a strict reproduction of their Quest build behaved identically to it on PC, down to reproducing several of their own quirks deliberately. Team Beef's engine changeset applies to this tree verbatim.

Known issue

On a Quest 2, the id logo, the opening cutscene and the first menu show double. A Quest 3 is fine on the same build. Not yet understood; the build logs everything the runtime reports for that path at developer 1 if you can send it.

What you need

A copy of Quake II — Steam or GOG — and a headset with an OpenXR runtime. Virtual Desktop, SteamVR or Oculus.

Credits

Built on Team Beef's Quake2Quest and on Yamagi Quake II 7.41. Quake II is id Software's. None of their data is included here.
