What is GenogramAI Desktop?

A native macOS application for clinical social workers, family therapists, counselors, and case managers who need to build family genograms and ecological maps (ecomaps) without sending sensitive client information to the cloud.

Unlike browser-based genogram makers, the desktop app saves everything locally to ~/Documents/GenogramAI/ — your client data never leaves your computer. That makes it a fit for HIPAA-conscious practice, institutional deployments, and anyone who can't (or won't) put case files behind a third-party login.

Built on the same canvas engine as the GenogramAI web app — same shortcuts, same export quality, same Hartman 1978 ecomap conventions — just packaged as a real Mac app.

Install

1. Open the downloaded .dmg
2. Drag GenogramAI to your Applications folder
3. Launch from Applications, Spotlight, or Launchpad
4. Sign in with the email tied to your Pro or Clinical plan — we send a one-time code, no password required

First launch typically takes 2–3 seconds while macOS verifies Apple's notarization signature. Subsequent launches are instant.

Frequently asked

Is the desktop app free? The download is free. To use it you need an active Pro or Clinical plan — same subscription that unlocks the web app.

Does it work offline? Yes, after the first sign-in. The license is cached locally (encrypted, machine-locked). You can keep building genograms and ecomaps for days without internet; the license re-verifies the next time you're online.

Does my client data leave my Mac? No — not by default. All .genogram.json and .ecomap.json files live in ~/Documents/GenogramAI/ and are never uploaded. AI features (Clinical plan only on desktop) optionally send de-identified prompts to our model proxy; in Clinical Mode, identifying info is stripped client-side before any request goes out.

What about Windows? Windows build is on the roadmap. macOS first because that's where our clinician audience asked loudest. Subscribe to release notifications by watching this repo → Watch → Releases only.

Can I use the web app instead? Absolutely. app.genogramai.com has full feature parity for AI, sharing, and cross-device access. The desktop app exists for clinicians who can't use cloud-based tools at all.
