Airclone v0.25.0
Airclone v0.25.0 — clearer problem reports
This release changes how Airclone records problems, so a report shows what
actually went wrong and doesn't make normal events look like bugs (#36).
Everything else is v0.24.1.
Four levels in the Problem report
Every recorded event is now one of:
| Level | Means |
|---|---|
FATAL |
Something stopped working: the engine crashed, or a screen failed to draw |
ERROR |
Something you asked for failed |
WARN |
A problem that may matter |
NOTICE |
Expected, and not a bug by itself |
When only notices were recorded, Settings says so (4 notices, no problems.).
Android closing the engine is not a bug, and now says so
Android stops background processes when it needs memory, and that includes the
rclone engine Airclone runs. Before, the only trace was a warning like
no answer from the engine for core/version, which looked like a bug. Airclone
now records why the engine stopped, with the signal or exit code and how long
it had been running:
- If Android closed it, it's a notice that says this is normal, and the
prompt saysAndroid closed the engine while Airclone was in the background. Start it again to continue. - Anything else, like a crash, is fatal: that one is worth reporting.
Copying a report
- Copy report copies everything. If that's too long to paste into a GitHub
issue, it leaves out notices first, then warnings, then the oldest entries,
and says exactly what it left out. - The ▾ next to it copies only errors and fatal, or only fatal.
- Save report… / Share report always hold everything.
Notes
- GitHub only, as a pre-release. The app stores stay on 0.24.0 for now.
Airclone v0.24.1
Airclone v0.24.1 — an unsigned iPhone/iPad app for sideloading
A small release with one addition: airclone-ios-unsigned.ipa. Everything
else is v0.24.0 (Docker, Linux on ARM64, Interface size); see its notes.
Sideload Airclone on iPhone and iPad
iOS does not install apps from a download by itself, but tools such as
AltStore, SideStore and Sideloadly can: they sign an app with your
own Apple ID and install it. airclone-ios-unsigned.ipa is for them. It is the
same app as the App Store version, unsigned, so your tool signs it for your
device.
- With a free Apple ID, a sideloaded app must be re-signed every 7 days, and
you can have 3 at a time. AltStore and SideStore refresh it automatically. - A sideloaded copy does not update itself. It tells you when a new version is
out; install the new.ipathe same way. - Would rather not sideload? Airclone is on the
App Store, and there is a free
TestFlight beta.
Notes
- GitHub only. The app stores stay on 0.24.0, which is the same app; this
version adds only the sideloading file and the update notice a sideloaded
copy shows. - The
.ipais unsigned on purpose: no Gigaion signing identity or
provisioning profile is inside it.
Airclone v0.24.0
Airclone v0.24.0 — Docker, Linux on ARM, and an interface size you choose
Run it on a server, with Docker
Airclone now comes as a Docker image, for x86_64 and ARM64:
ghcr.io/gigaionllc/airclone. It serves the whole app to your browser
through the Web UI. A short, commented docker-compose.yml is all it takes:
open https://<your-server>:5799 and sign in. Set
AIRCLONE_WEBUI_PASSWORD to choose your own password, or read the generated
one with docker logs airclone. Your settings live in /config, and the
folders you mount under /data show up as Home.
Guide: Running Airclone in Docker
Linux on ARM64
Every Linux download now also comes for ARM64: a Raspberry Pi 4 or 5 on a
64-bit OS, ARM servers and ARM laptops. Same three choices as on a PC:
Airclone-aarch64.AppImageairclone-aarch64.flatpakairclone-linux-arm64.tar.gz
Not sure which you need? Run uname -m: aarch64 means ARM64. An ARM64
AppImage updates itself to the ARM64 version.
Make everything bigger or smaller
Settings → Appearance → Interface size scales all of Airclone from 80%
to 250%, on top of your display's own scaling. It is the fix for a tiny
interface on a 4K Linux screen under Wayland: it works natively there and
leaves your mouse pointer and other apps alone. To start at a size, set
AIRCLONE_SCALE, for example AIRCLONE_SCALE=2 ./Airclone-x86_64.AppImage.
On Windows, macOS and Linux.
Notes
- Windows builds are signed (Azure Artifact Signing, OV-class — SmartScreen
may still warn until the certificate builds reputation). macOS builds are
signed and notarized with a Developer ID. - The Web UI is HTTPS only, with a certificate Airclone makes itself, so
your browser warns once on the first visit. That is expected. - Mounting is off in Docker: it needs FUSE, which a container only gets
with extra privileges. Browsing, copying, syncing and backups all work. - This release includes everything in 0.23.2 (Sign in again, rclone
v1.75.2). - Store versions follow on each store's own schedule.
Airclone v0.23.2
Airclone v0.23.2 — sign in again, and an rclone security update
Sign in again
A cloud you signed in to (Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, Box…) can stop
letting Airclone in: the sign-in expired, you changed your password, or you
removed access. Until now the only fix was to delete the remote and add it
again, losing its settings.
Now the remote's ⋯ menu has Sign in again. Sign in in your browser as
usual, and only the sign-in is replaced: the name, folders, Shared Drive and
every other setting stay as they are. When opening a folder or Test
connection fails because the sign-in stopped working, the error has a
Sign in again button too.
rclone v1.75.2
The bundled engine moves to rclone v1.75.2, a security release: fixes for
paths escaping the root through .rclonelink files, credentials leaking on
redirects, and a batch of Go networking CVEs, plus fixes for VFS reads and
transfer speed reporting.
iPhone and iPad: free public beta
iOS can't install apps from a download, so there is now a free public
TestFlight beta: https://testflight.apple.com/join/kHRBzZnc
Notes
- Windows builds are signed (Azure Artifact Signing, OV-class — SmartScreen
may still warn until the certificate builds reputation). macOS builds are
signed and notarized with a Developer ID. - Store versions follow on each store's own schedule.
Airclone v0.23.1
Airclone v0.23.1 — search subfolders, and a player that plays more
Two things people asked for: finding a file without knowing which folder it is
in, and playing the films and music they actually have, with the audio track
and subtitles they want. Both work with a TV remote as well as a mouse or a
finger.
Search this folder, or every folder under it
Every file pane now has one search box. It searches this folder as you
type, matching every word you enter anywhere in the name. One step more —
the Subfolders switch, the Search subfolders for "…" line under the
results, or Ctrl+Shift+F — searches the whole folder tree below.
The first subfolder search reads the tree once (you can cancel it), then
narrows instantly as you keep typing. Each result shows the folder it lives
in, and Show in folder takes you there. Back steps out of the results,
then out of the search. This replaces the old Search dialog and the separate
filter box.
The player: pick the audio and the subtitles
- Audio and subtitle pickers on every device: a button in the controls on
a phone or computer, and a panel the remote can reach on a TV. Each track
shows its language, channels and format, so two English tracks are easy to
tell apart. - Subtitle files next to the video load by themselves —
film.en.srt,
film.de.srt,.ass,.ssa,.vtt— and are labelled as external. - A film whose first audio track can't be played on this device switches
to the next one and tells you, instead of refusing to play. On Android
this is mostly Dolby TrueHD. - On a TV, subtitles are large and move above the controls while the
controls are showing.
Plays more of what you have
Blu-ray and camcorder .m2ts / .mts, DVD .vob, .ogv, .3gp, .divx,
.f4v, .mk3d, and audio in .ape, .wv, .tta, .mpc, .aiff, .dsf,
.mka, .m4b, .ac3 and .dts now open in the built-in player. A file it
cannot play says so, with Open in another app — that is also the answer
for re-encoding: Airclone plays files as they are and does not transcode.
A better TV remote experience in the player
- BACK closes what is open — the track panel, then the controls, then the
film — one step per press. On Android 16 one press used to do two. - Pausing keeps the controls up; moving along them no longer lets them
disappear halfway. - Focus no longer goes missing after Previous / Next, or when moving right
from Play on the last file of a folder.
Notes
- Windows builds are signed (Azure Artifact Signing, OV-class — SmartScreen
may still warn until the certificate builds reputation). macOS builds are
signed and notarized with a Developer ID. - Styled (ASS) subtitles show as plain text, and picture-based subtitles
from DVD and Blu-ray rips (PGS, VobSub) are listed but can't be shown yet. - Not played in the app: MXF, RealMedia (
.rm,.rmvb) and bare.eac3
files — use Open in another app. E-AC-3 audio inside MKV and MP4 plays. - For maintainers: Settings → Diagnostics → Media capabilities (Advanced
mode) lists what this device's player can open. - This is the first full release of 0.23. The v0.23.0 tag built only the
Android packages — the desktop and Mac App Store builds failed on a Web UI
compile error — so 0.23.1 is the same release with that fixed. - Store versions follow on each store's own schedule.
Where to get it
- Google Play — production, 100% rollout (version code 151).
- Apple App Store — iOS released 2026-10-06, Mac App Store released 2026-10-07 (build 151).
- Microsoft Store — passed certification and published (package
0.23.1.0).
Stores roll updates out on their own schedule, so your device may take a day or
so to offer it.

Airclone v0.22.2
Airclone v0.22.2 — security hardening
A security-focused update from a review of the whole app and its release
pipeline. Nothing you use day to day changes; a few things now come with safer
defaults, and several holes that only an attacker would ever have found are
closed.
The Web UI can no longer be used to run programs
If someone got hold of a Web UI session — a stolen cookie, a leaked password —
they could set up a remote whose options make rclone run a program on the
machine hosting Airclone. The Web UI now refuses those options and the
"on-the-fly" remote definitions that could carry them, while the remotes you
actually use (including sftp remotes imported from an existing config, and
editing them) keep working. Files opened through the Web UI can also never run
as part of the Web UI page itself.
A Web UI session still has the same file access as the user running Airclone —
treat its password like a login to that account.
Serving a remote comes with a password by default
Mount & Share → Serve now fills in a username and a random password for a
new server, even on this device only, because other programs and web pages on
the same computer could otherwise reach it. The password is shown (and can be
regenerated or copied from the running server). Clear it if you really want a
server without one.
Always the newest rclone engine
If you once used "update engine", Airclone could keep running that older copy
even after a newer one shipped inside the app. It now runs whichever is newer.
Extracting archives needs rclone 1.75.1 or newer (older versions could write
files outside the destination folder); with an older engine, Airclone says so
and Settings shows a warning.
The iPhone, iPad and Mac App Store builds now carry rclone 1.75.1 too — they
had been one patch release behind.
Smaller fixes
- The clean-up of a crashed engine checks that a process really is Airclone's
rclone before stopping it. - The update check only ever opens this project's own GitHub pages.
- The release pipeline runs with far fewer permissions, and the Linux AppImage
tools are verified by checksum before they run. - Library updates (patch and minor releases only).
Notes
- Windows builds are signed (Azure Artifact Signing, OV-class — SmartScreen
may still warn until the certificate builds reputation). macOS builds are
signed and notarized with a Developer ID. - Behaviour change you might notice: a new Serve starts with a password.
Existing habits keep working if you clear the field. - Store versions follow on each store's own schedule.
Airclone v0.22.1
Airclone v0.22.1 — hold to fast-forward
A follow-up for Google TV and Android TV, from the same person whose reports
shaped v0.22.0. Music was right; video skipping was not.
Skipping through a video works, and holding keeps going
In v0.22.0, pressing the on-screen fast-forward or rewind button skipped once —
and then the next press paused the film and jumped back to the Play button, so
you could never skip twice in a row. That is fixed: the button you pressed stays
selected, and every press skips again.
And now you can hold it. Keep OK held on ⏪ or ⏩ (or hold the remote's own
rewind / fast-forward key) and the film keeps moving, faster the longer you
hold, until you let go. A quick press is still a 30-second jump.
Holding OK anywhere else is now a single press too, so a long press on
play/pause no longer flickers between playing and paused.
Notes
- TV-only behaviour, except the remote keys. Holding a keyboard's or
Bluetooth remote's rewind / fast-forward key scans on every platform, the same
way it does on a television. No phone, tablet or desktop layout changes. - Windows builds are signed (Azure Artifact Signing, OV-class — SmartScreen
may still warn until the certificate builds reputation). macOS builds are
signed and notarized with a Developer ID. - Verified by its test suite, not on a physical television. The tests drive
real key presses through the player's controls and were confirmed to fail on
v0.22.0's behaviour. If it is still not right on your set, please say so.
Airclone v0.22.0
Airclone v0.22.0 — the remote can run the player now
If you use Airclone on a Google TV or Android TV, this one is for you. Music and
video played fine; the remote just could not do much about either. Now it can.
What a remote can do during playback
Press anything and the controls appear, sized for a television rather than a
phone. Then:
- Left and right skip backward and forward through a film — 10 seconds, and
faster if you keep pressing, so getting across a two-hour film does not mean
sixty presses. - OK pauses, and brings the controls back when they have faded.
- Back clears the controls off the screen, and leaves the player next time.
- Your remote's own buttons work — play/pause, rewind, fast-forward, and
next/previous track — wherever you happen to be on the screen.
The controls fade out while a film plays, so the picture is the picture. They do
not fade while it is paused, because a paused film with nothing on screen is
a film you cannot restart.
Music got a screen built for a television
Previous and next have been there since v0.8.0, but on a TV they were two small
icons in a card built for a mouse, and the only way to reach them was to press
the arrow keys until something highlighted. That is not a reasonable thing to ask
of anyone sitting across a room.
The audio player on a television is now a full screen: large artwork, the track
name at a size you can read from a sofa, and a row of controls you can actually
aim at — with play/pause already selected the moment it opens, so OK works
straight away.
Skipping tracks moves between tracks
Next and previous now move to the next file of the same kind. A folder of
songs almost always has a cover.jpg in it, and often a .cue as well; until
now, "next track" could drop you onto the picture halfway through an album. On a
phone that was a shrug — you swipe again. On a television those two buttons are
the only way through the folder, so it made an album unplayable end to end.
Videos behave the same way: the next episode, not the subtitle file sitting next
to it.
Notes
- The transport buttons work everywhere, not only on a television — a
keyboard's media keys and a Bluetooth remote paired to a phone are the same
buttons, so they are honoured on every platform. Everything else in this
release is TV-only, and no phone, tablet or desktop layout changes. - A live stream has nothing to seek within, so on one the player says Live
rather than offering a progress bar that cannot move. - Windows builds are signed (Azure Artifact Signing, OV-class — SmartScreen
may still warn until the certificate builds reputation). macOS builds are
signed and notarized with a Developer ID. - This release was verified by its test suite, not on a physical television.
The behaviour is covered by tests that were each confirmed to fail without the
fix, and the remote's transport keys were measured reaching the app on an
Android TV emulator — but nobody here has a set to try it on. If something is
off on yours, please say so; the last three TV problems were all found this
way.
Airclone v0.21.0
Airclone v0.21.0 — adding a cloud is guided now
Adding storage used to mean picking from 69 alphabetically-sorted backend names starting at
alias, filling in a form of up to 78 options, and then answering every field you left blank
a second time as a question. It worked. Nobody would call it guided.
Now you press Add a cloud, pick Google Drive, press Sign in, and you are done.
What you will see
Ten clouds you recognise, first. Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud Drive, Google
Photos, Amazon S3, Cloudflare R2, Backblaze B2, SFTP and WebDAV — then everything else rclone
supports behind "All storage types". Search finds things by the name you would actually use:
type "Wasabi" or "Nextcloud" and you get them, without needing to know that Wasabi is spelled
"s3" and Nextcloud is spelled "webdav".
Signing in is one button. The other ways are still there, one tap behind Other ways to
sign in, and each only appears when it can actually work for that provider on that device:
show me the link, authorize on another device with rclone's own hand-off, or fill everything
in by hand.
The fields that matter, in words. For the storage types rclone asks nothing about — S3,
B2, SFTP, WebDAV, FTP, SMB, Azure and crypt — you get one screen with the handful of fields
that are actually needed, called what they are called in your provider's console. Picking a
crypt remote's underlying storage is a list of your remotes rather than a text box you have
to type name:folder into correctly.
Questions became controls. Where rclone offers a list of choices you now get a list.
Choosing a Google Shared Drive used to mean typing a drive ID.
You are not stopped to invent a name. One is suggested and you can change it.
Google is retiring the sign-in rclone has always used
This one is worth knowing about whether or not you use Airclone.
Google is switching off the shared sign-in credential that rclone has used for Google Drive
and Google Photos. rclone's own words are that it "will stop working during 2026", and rclone
now recommends creating your own.
Airclone asks you, plainly, rather than choosing for you. You can set up your own sign-in —
there is a short walkthrough and a link to rclone's full instructions — or use the shared one
for now, knowing it has an end date, and change it later under Advanced without adding the
cloud again. Existing remotes are not touched. If one stops working, the same walkthrough
is offered from the failure.
Cancelling actually cancels
If you close a sign-in half way through, two things now happen that did not before: the
sign-in is ended properly instead of being left waiting — an abandoned one used to make your
next attempt fail — and the half-written remote is removed. rclone writes a remote's entry
as soon as it asks its first question, so an abandoned setup left behind an entry that looked
like a remote and could not connect to anything.
Airclone checks that the removal worked instead of assuming it did, and tells you if it did
not.
Nothing was taken away
The full options form is still there, exactly as it was, on every storage type — from the
tile, from the header of any guided step, and offered automatically if setup fails, carrying
what you already typed. It gained one thing: a filter box. S3 has 78 options, and finding
endpoint by scrolling was the previous reality.
Editing an existing remote is unchanged.
Also in this release
- Credentials are hidden as you type them in more places. rclone does not mark every secret as
one — it does not flag a Google client secret or an S3 access key as a password — so
Airclone no longer takes its word for it. - Error messages are cleaned of anything that looks like a credential before they are shown.
Some server errors quote the address they failed on, and those can contain a password. - On Android, signing in opens a real browser tab rather than failing silently on newer
versions of Android.
Which rclone is inside
rclone v1.75.1, the current release, bundled into every download — you do not need rclone
installed. This version is not optional here: the guided sign-in asks rclone for the sign-in
link through methods that 1.75 introduced. If you point Airclone at your own older rclone it
still works, by reading the link from the engine's own output instead.
v1.75.1 is also a security release, and several of its advisories land on things Airclone
ships: a path-traversal in untrusted zip archives, and a planted symlink escaping the root of
a local remote.
Honest status
This release is on GitHub only. Google Drive setup has been tested end to end on Windows.
The Android, iOS and macOS paths share the same code and are covered by automated tests, but
have not yet been through a real sign-in on a device — so this is not going to the app stores
until they have.
Everything Airclone does with rclone's configuration was verified against a real rclone
v1.75.1 before it was written, and the recorded behaviour is replayed in the test suite, so a
future rclone that changes its questions will fail a test rather than surprise you.
