HelioFITS Studio 0.8.3
HelioFITS Studio 0.8.3
This is a pre-release, published for testing ahead of 1.0. It is used daily on Apple Silicon Macs; Windows and Linux are new. Please report anything that breaks.
New in 0.8.3
Multilayer FITS, including PUNCH
- FITS files that hold more than one image now load. PUNCH's polarized mosaics (PAM, PTM) carry two or three images in one file, and earlier builds refused them. Each image is named from the file's own
OBSLAYRkeywords, such as Polar_B and Polar_pB - The first time such a file is loaded, HelioFITS Studio asks which image to show. Afterwards, the Image row in the layer's Display section, just below Color, switches between them. A saved session remembers the choice and does not ask again
- PUNCH files that are already downloaded load the same way, from the cache or from disk
- Known issue: while a layer is still downloading, the dropdowns in its options are hard to open and can close by themselves. Choose the image before starting a long download, or let the download finish first
Loading
- Multi-frame FITS layers (PUNCH, LASCO, VSO) grow as they download. Each frame joins the movie and the timeline as it arrives, rather than everything appearing at the end, and the playhead stays where it is
- The layer's status says what is happening: Connecting, Restoring from cache, Downloading (frames downloaded and frames read from the cache counted separately, with the transfer rate), and Waiting on host when the archive has sent nothing for five seconds
- At most four frames download at once, so they finish one after another instead of all crawling in together
- Frames that fail to arrive are listed on the layer, and its Refresh button fetches them again
- The frame count sets how many LASCO and SUVI frames are requested from the VSO. It had been stuck near 97
Display defaults
- FITS clipping defaults to the 0.5 % percentile instead of 0.001 %. The narrower range keeps PUNCH's polarized planes from rendering near white, at the cost of saturating slightly more of a bright coronagraph frame
- The HDR canvas is off until it is turned on, so a picture looks the same on a projector or in a screen share as on the Mac's own display
- Exports default to a square (1:1) frame
- The automatic crop frames the edge of the widest field rather than its corner, so a PUNCH mosaic fills the view (about 227 R☉ rather than 474)
Projections
- The Crop is a circular cut at every warp setting. It used to renormalize the warp, which made it behave like a second zoom whenever the warp was not linear; now the warp stays fixed by the loaded data and the Crop only decides where the picture stops. A flat Helioradial figure made with both a crop and a non-linear warp will look different from before; with the warp linear nothing changes
- The radial grid lines up with the image under a warp in flat Helioradial, where it had been warped twice
Comet tracking
- A Track Comet panel beside Track CME lists the comets that could be in the field during the movie, and marks where the chosen one is in each frame. The list follows the movie's time range
Interface
- The layer options, Display and Intensity sections stay open
- Scrolling a sidebar scrolls it, instead of being caught by whichever slider or dropdown passes under the pointer
- A layer alone in the scene drives the movie, so it plays without first being selected
- The time-sync button sits with the layer's other buttons, beside Refresh
- When nothing loaded is in view, the timeline trims itself to the loaded data
- The movie no longer waits for the mouse when one layer is slow to deliver (the wait is capped at 120 ms), and a new layer's first picture appears as soon as it arrives
- Window > Log shows the log as it is being written. Load from Cache has moved to the Layers menu
Name
- The application is called HelioFITS Studio again, and installs as
HelioFITS Studio.app. HFStudio stays its technical name, as in 0.8.0 to 0.8.2: the downloads are stillHFStudio-<version>, the settings folder is still~/HFStudioand SAMP still seesHFStudio, so nothing a 0.8.2 user has needs to move - The repository is
GillySpace27/HelioFITS-Studio, its original name, and the download page isgilly.space/heliofits-studio. Every earlier address forwards: the repository's names since September, and/hfs,/hfstudio,/punchstudio,/jhvand their capitalized forms on the site - Between 2026-09-21 and 2026-09-23 the development builds were called PUNCHStudio. Nothing was released under that name; settings those builds wrote to
~/PUNCHStudioare carried into~/HFStudioif that folder does not exist yet
Icon
- The icon is the sun-pie iris again, lettered HFS: six wedges of the Sun at six wavelengths around a dark hexagon, an aperture made of solar images. It went to the HelioFITS plugin for a day and came back; HelioFITS keeps its AIA 171 Sun. A ladder of instrument rings was drawn for this release and dropped, because below 64 pixels it read as a grey target
- HFS is set at 128 pixels and above, the application's technical name as its downloads and settings folder carry it. At 64 and below the iris is plain, since letters there only smudge and the six wedges still read as a rosette.
release/iris_plain_1024.pngis the unlettered source art - The Mac bundle now carries a compiled asset catalog as well as the .icns, because macOS 26 draws a .icns-only application on a grey plate at 16 and 32 pixels whatever its artwork does. The catalog is given the art unmasked, since macOS applies its own shape and insets anything that arrives already shaped
- Windows gets a .ico with the same per-size artwork, so its small icons are not shrunken copies of the large one either
Fixes
- Restoring a session with LASCO layers no longer re-reads every header. 0.8.1 saved what the pointing probe concluded but only believed it back if it had found something to lend, and a movie clear of the 2025-08 gap has nothing to lend, so the usual case probed again on every restore
-stateopens a session and the window now belongs to it, so autosave and quit write back to that file. It used to load the named session but keep saving to whichever session the window remembered from the previous launch, so opening A and quitting wrote A's scene over B
About HelioFITS Studio
HelioFITS Studio is a fork of JHelioviewer, the open-source solar image browser from the ESA/NASA
Helioviewer Project. It streams decades of full-disk and coronagraph imagery from the major
solar observatories and plays it back as movies. It is maintained separately from JHelioviewer,
so please report problems and requests on this repository's issue tracker:
https://github.com/GillySpace27/HelioFITS-Studio/issues
Why a fork
We work with NASA's PUNCH mission and the wider coronagraph record, and JHelioviewer did not do
several things that work needed: load PUNCH data, stretch the outer corona so it has room to read,
equalize the steep radial falloff, and a few more. HelioFITS Studio adds them. Several of those pieces
have since been taken into JHelioviewer's own development line (the PUNCH layer, RHEF, the
Helioradial projections and the grid colour controls), and others were submitted there as pull
requests. Earlier builds were published here as the JHelioviewer PUNCH & Coronal Research
Distribution (v5.6a to v5.6d); HelioFITS Studio continues that line under its own name. The README on
this repository explains the fork, its relationship to JHelioviewer and its licensing in full.
What HelioFITS Studio adds
Projections
- Helioradial: a Sun-centered radial re-stretch that gives the outer corona room, on one knob from linear through logarithmic to inverse. The disk itself is left unwarped.
- Helioradial Unrolled: the same radial stretch unrolled into a position-angle strip (earlier-stage draft).
- The redundant Polar and LogPolar projections are removed, subsumed by these.
- Observer Sky (experimental): a projection that looks out from the observer's own position instead of at the Sun, with the coronagraph reference surfaces along for the ride.
Data sources
- PUNCH: load NASA PUNCH mosaics from the public archive and play them as movies. (also merged into JHelioviewer, Helioviewer-Project#328)
- PROBA-3 / ASPIICS: ESA's formation-flying coronagraph; loads an orbit's frames, with a cadence control and a confirmation before a multi-gigabyte download.
- A PUNCH pipeline-version selector (keeps a movie to one calibration), a per-layer archive-refresh button, and a shared display range that stops PUNCH movies strobing.
- Coronagraph and EUV data at full depth. LASCO C2 and C3 straight from NRL's level-0.5 archive (the VSO's LASCO catalogue stops in early 2025; NRL's is current), GOES SUVI as native L1b per channel, and AIA per channel. The layer readout states the depth measured from the pixels beside the depth the file claims, so an 8-bit browse product is named as one however wide the buffer holding it.
- Native FITS from the VSO: a FITS (VSO) card on the add-layer button pulls calibrated full-bit-depth FITS for most missions (LASCO, EIT, AIA, HMI, SECCHI, XRT, EIS), plus GOES SUVI channel by channel as native L1b, for when the 8-bit JP2 browse products band under a hard stretch.
Image processing
- RHEF: the Radial Histogram Equalization Filter, with an Upsilon control for shadows and highlights. (also taken into JHelioviewer's development line)
- C3 with its background removed. NRL's monthly minimum images are fetched automatically, the two bracketing each frame interpolated as their own getbkgimg.pro does, and subtracted in DN before normalization, which also puts a movie's frames on one photometric footing.
Display
- HDR canvas (macOS): image layers render into the display's extended range, so the corona can be brighter than the window. Needs an EDR display.

Display
- HDR canvas (macOS): image layers render into the display's extended range, so the corona can be brighter than the window. Needs an EDR display.
Overlays
- Adjustable coordinate grid: color, opacity, line width, label size, and radial-label angle.
CME tracking
- Pick a CACTus eruption and hold its leading front at a fixed screen radius while it propagates, so you watch it evolve rather than recede.
Point clouds
- Point Cloud layer: render a scattered 3D point cloud over the Sun, colored by a per-point value, with an alpha-shape surface slider that recovers a folded surface from the points (convex hull at 100 %, the folds resolving as you drag down). Load the included
fabric_suvi.json.gzdemo; a rippled sheet placed in the GOES-R SUVI field of view; via the layer's Open… button.
Interface
- Reorganized layer panel: a full-width docked transport bar, a collapsible sidebar, and nested layer options.
- Discoverable timeline trim and move gestures.
- Imagery appears while the rest is still loading instead of after the last frame, and frames with no picture in them (SUVI darks, LASCO's daily filter sequence) are recognized and replaced by the nearest good frame.
- Truthful export framing: output size is an aspect plus a long side, and locking the aspect letterboxes the canvas to exactly what the export will contain.
- Quality of life: a small clock dial on the timestamp overlay; the colour legend as a true gradient; layers added from the File menu follow the master range including cadence; a second running instance degrades to a memory-only cache instead of flooding the log; saving a session by hand pulls its data down; assorted smaller fixes.
Reliability
- Gzipped FITS from NOAA load; VSO queries ask for the one channel wanted, a day at a time, so a SUVI query takes seconds rather than appearing to hang; an unreachable IPv6 address no longer fails PUNCH loads at random; files dropped on the window load themselves.
Packaging
- Signed and notarized macOS
.appwith an embedded Java runtime, so it opens with no security warning and needs no separate Java install.
Install
Apple Silicon Mac (recommended): download HFStudio-0.8.2.dmg, open it, and drag HFStudio
into your Applications folder. It is signed and notarized, so it opens with no security warning,
and it carries its own Java runtime, so there is nothing else to install. Just double-click.
Intel Mac: download HFStudio-0.8.2-intel.dmg, open it, and drag HFStudio into your
Applications folder. Signed and notarized, with its own Java, like the Apple Silicon one. It has
been built and tested under Rosetta on an Apple Silicon Mac but not yet used on an Intel Mac, so
please tell us how it does.
Windows and Linux (early): download HFStudio-0.8.2-windows.zip or HFStudio-0.8.2-linux.tar.gz. Each carries
its own Java, so there is nothing else to install: unzip and run HFStudio\HFStudio.exe, or untar
and run HFStudio/bin/HFStudio. 64-bit Intel and AMD machines only. The Windows build is not
code-signed yet, so Windows may say it "protected your PC"; choose More info, then Run anyway.
Our build service adds these two to this page about ten minutes after it is published, and only
once each has been started, drawn an image and decoded a JPEG 2000 file on a Windows and a Linux
machine without a graphics card. Nobody has used them on real hardware yet, so please tell us
how they do.
The full walkthrough is the HFStudio-Guide.pdf asset on this release (also as .md).

Licensed under MPL 2.0, the same as JHelioviewer; the source of this release is this repository at
tag v0.8.2. JPEG 2000 decoding is OpenJPEG under the BSD 2-clause licence, in place of the
proprietary Kakadu codec JHelioviewer uses, which is what makes these binaries ours to give away.
Other bundled components keep their own licences and the About dialog credits them all.

Install
Apple Silicon Mac (recommended): download HFStudio-0.8.0.dmg, open it, and drag HFStudio
into your Applications folder. It is signed and notarized, so it opens with no security warning,
and it carries its own Java runtime, so there is nothing else to install. Just double-click.
Intel Mac: download HFStudio-0.8.0.zip. It needs Java 25+ (https://adoptium.net "Temurin 25",
or brew install openjdk@25). Unzip, then double-click run.command.
Only macOS is tested so far. The zip also carries Linux and Windows launchers, but we have not
run it on those platforms, so treat them as untried.
The full walkthrough is the HFStudio-Guide.pdf asset on this release (also as .md).

Licensing
Licensed under MPL 2.0, the same as JHelioviewer; the source of this release is this repository at
tag v0.8.0. JPEG 2000 decoding is OpenJPEG under the BSD 2-clause licence, in place of the
proprietary Kakadu codec JHelioviewer uses, which is what makes these binaries ours to give away.
Other bundled components keep their own licences and the About dialog credits them all.
HFStudio 0.4 (preview)
Renamed. This was published as the JHelioviewer PUNCH and Coronal Research Distribution, tag v5.6d-coronal-research, and is renumbered here as HFStudio 0.4 so the version history reads continuously up to 0.8.
Binaries removed. The .dmg and .zip bundled the proprietary Kakadu JPEG 2000 codec. HFStudio replaced it with OpenJPEG in 0.8, and a fork may not redistribute Kakadu, so those downloads have been taken down. The field guide and the demo point cloud remain.
JHelioviewer: PUNCH & Coronal Research Distribution
JHelioviewer (JHV) is the open-source solar image browser from the ESA/NASA Helioviewer
Project. It streams decades of full-disk and coronagraph imagery from the major solar
observatories and plays it back as movies. This is an unofficial distribution built from my fork.
Why this fork
I work with NASA's PUNCH mission and the wider coronagraph record, and stock JHV did not yet
do several things I needed: load PUNCH data, stretch the outer corona so it has room to read,
equalize the steep radial falloff, and a few more. Rather than wait, I added them and packaged
a build so colleagues and I can use them now. Everything here is being contributed back to the
official project; a couple of pieces have already merged, and the rest are in review. Once they
land, the official JHV will carry them and this fork can retire.
Not an official Helioviewer Project release, and lightly tested. Please send problems to me,
not the JHV team.
What this build adds
New in this release
- Coronagraph and EUV data at full depth. LASCO C2 and C3 straight from NRL's level-0.5 archive (the VSO's LASCO catalogue stops in early 2025; NRL's is current), GOES SUVI as native L1b per channel, and AIA per channel. The layer readout states the depth measured from the pixels beside the depth the file claims, so an 8-bit browse product is named as one however wide the buffer holding it.
- C3 with its background removed. NRL's monthly minimum images are fetched automatically, the two bracketing each frame interpolated as their own getbkgimg.pro does, and subtracted in DN before normalization, which also puts a movie's frames on one photometric footing.
- Imagery appears while the rest is still loading instead of after the last frame, and frames with no picture in them (SUVI darks, LASCO's daily filter sequence) are recognized and replaced by the nearest good frame.
- Fixes: gzipped FITS from NOAA now load at all; VSO queries ask for the one channel wanted, a day at a time, so SUVI went from an apparent hang to seconds; an unreachable IPv6 address no longer fails PUNCH loads at random; files dropped on the window load themselves.
Previously
- Ten-bit canvas (macOS): the on-screen image carries 10 bits per channel instead of 8: four times the levels, the anti-banding dither retires automatically, colours unchanged. The 16-bit movie export was already deeper and is untouched.
- Observer Sky (experimental): a projection that looks out from the observer's own position instead of at the Sun, with the coronagraph reference surfaces along for the ride.
Data sources
- PUNCH: load NASA PUNCH mosaics from the public archive and play them as movies. (merged upstream, Helioviewer-Project#328)
Image processing
- RHEF: the Radial Histogram Equalization Filter, with an Upsilon control for shadows and highlights. (merged upstream, Helioviewer-Project#327)
Packaging

.appwith an embedded Java runtime, so it opens with no security warning and needs no separate Java install.
