Symlink Manager 1.1.0
What's new in 1.1.0
This release substantially expands Symlink Manager beyond directory links.
Linked Obsidian vaults
Link another Obsidian vault into your current vault and work with its content effectively as part of the parent vault's file tree. Open and edit notes, manage files and folders, and move or copy files across what would normally be a vault boundary while keeping the linked vault physically separate.
When you want to work with the linked vault independently, right-click it and choose Open vault. Obsidian will open or focus the target vault while leaving the current vault open.
File symlinks
Symlink Manager can now create and manage symbolic links to individual files as well as directories. Symlinks to Markdown (.md) files work particularly well in Obsidian, allowing a note stored elsewhere on your computer to behave like a normal note inside the vault without creating another copy.
Other improvements
Create links to files or directories using the native picker or an absolute path.
Open linked files in their operating-system default application.
Improved symbolic-link detection and handling.
Improved vault refresh behaviour after creating links.
Expanded documentation covering linked-vault workflows and known Obsidian symlink behaviour.
Note about non-Markdown files
On Windows, Obsidian may recognise symlinks to PDFs, images and other non-Markdown files but fail to render their target content. The links themselves remain valid and can normally be opened using Open in default app. See the README for details.
Symlink Manager 1.0.0
Symlink Manager 1.0.0
First public release of Symlink Manager for Obsidian.
Features
Create symbolic links directly from the Obsidian File Explorer.
Native folder picker for selecting targets.
Windows directory junction support.
Safe removal of links without deleting their targets.
Show link targets and open them in the system file explorer.
Visual decoration of linked folders.
Name-collision protection and friendly permission-error handling.
Current refresh behaviour
After creating a symbolic link or junction, Symlink Manager currently reloads the Obsidian app window so Obsidian fully discovers the newly linked tree. This is a temporary workaround while a reliable internal refresh mechanism is investigated.
Removing a link does not reload Obsidian.
Platform support
Desktop only. Symbolic links are supported on Windows, macOS and Linux subject to operating-system permissions. Windows also supports directory junctions.
