Simple Practice Journal helps musicians organize practice by folder, track exercises or pieces, time sessions, review totals, and export backups.

How to Use the App

1. Create a Folder

Folders help organize your practice. You can use folders for instruments, lesson books, songs, techniques, students, or goals.

  1. Open the Library tab.
  2. In Start Practice, enter a name in the Folder field.
  3. Tap Create Folder.
  4. The new folder will appear in your Library.

Examples:

  • Piano
  • Guitar
  • Scales
  • Jazz Standards
  • Lesson Book 1
  • Audition Music

2. Start a Practice Session

You can start practicing from a folder or as a quick unfiled session.

  1. Open the Library tab.
  2. Enter an exercise, piece, or activity in the Exercise field.
  3. Choose a folder if you want the session organized under one.
  4. Tap Start.
  5. The practice timer will begin.

Examples of exercises:

  • Major scales
  • Sight reading
  • Etude 3
  • Song title
  • Warmups
  • Rhythm practice

3. Use the Practice Timer

While practicing, use the timer screen to track your session.

You can:

  • Start and stop the timer
  • View elapsed practice time
  • Add notes about the session
  • Use the metronome if needed
  • Save the session when finished

When you save, the session is added to your practice history.

4. Review Your Practice

Use the Totals tab to see your practice progress.

The Totals screen can help you review:

  • Total practice time
  • Recent activity
  • Weekly practice patterns
  • Folder and exercise progress

This is useful for seeing what you practiced most and where you may want to spend more time.

5. Use Practice Suggestions

The Library screen includes Practice Suggestions to help you quickly choose what to work on next.

Use suggestions when:

  • You are not sure what to practice
  • You want to continue recent work
  • You want a faster way to start a session

6. Edit or Manage Practice Items

Folders and exercises can be managed from the Library.

Use folder or item options to review, rename, organize, or manage your practice content when available.

Troubleshooting

My data is missing

Check whether you are using the same device where the data was created. Practice data is stored locally unless you export or import it.

If you have a backup:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Import Practice Data.
  3. Select your backup file.

I accidentally deleted data

Deleted local data cannot be restored unless you exported a backup first.

If you have a backup, import it from Settings.

The timer or metronome is acting strangely

Try these steps:

  1. Stop the current session.
  2. Close and reopen the app.
  3. Check your metronome settings.
  4. Restart your device if the issue continues.

I cannot import a file

Make sure the file is a supported app export or MPJ backup. If the file was edited manually, it may not import correctly.

I want to move data to another device

  1. On the original device, open Settings.
  2. Tap Export All Practice CSV.
  3. Save the file to iCloud Drive, Files, email, or another transfer method.
  4. On the new device, open Settings.
  5. Tap Import Practice Data.
  6. Select the exported file.

Privacy

Simple Practice Journal is designed to store practice data locally on your device. The app does not require an account, does not show ads, and does not track you.

Data only leaves the app when you choose to export or share it.
