GrayHorizon 1.1.1

Choose a tag to compare

@brmccrary brmccrary released this 22 Oct 00:07

Fix: Stable camera has been improved. This should help "double eyes" on startup.

PLEASE CONSIDER USING DATA OUT if you are not doing so. It improves tracking in FH5 and FH6, and keeps your seat and HUD layouts per car in all three. See the Quick start.

Fix: The menu's buttons could slip through to the game when the menu was turning off.

FH4: Fix HUD not displaying (issue #7). On some PCs the HUD elements were not displaying and pop-ups looked doubled.

FH4: Under certain circumstances the VR session could start while the intro videos were playing, causing a garbled image.

GrayHorizon 1.1.0 - menu in the headset

@brmccrary brmccrary released this 21 Oct 05:18

New: a menu in the headset (all three games). Press F12, or a wheel or pad button you give it in GrayHorizon Settings. From there you can recenter, move the seat, switch the speedometer on or off, lay out the HUD, take a screenshot, switch flat view, and change the picture settings (performance and fps displays, stable camera, eye timing warp, anti-aliasing, sharpening, foveated rendering), each showing what it is set to now. Drive it with the D-pad or the arrow keys: Enter selects, and Back goes back or closes it. While the menu is open the game does not get those buttons, and the menu button itself never reaches the game. A notification line just above the menu still shows things like "screenshot saved".

Adjust HUD is in the menu now. Pick an element, switch it on or off, move it, and set its distance, size, opacity, background and capture area. Then save the layout for this car, or as the default for all cars.

Changed: fewer hotkeys. The settings that are in the menu no longer have hotkeys of their own: flat view, HUD calibration, save the HUD as the default, stable camera, eye timing warp, anti-aliasing, sharpening and foveated rendering. Old bindings for them in your ini are ignored. Recenter, seat, screenshot and the other everyday hotkeys still work as before.

GrayHorizon Settings: the menu's controls have a box of their own at the top of the hotkeys, laid out like a D-pad, and paired hotkeys (seat forward/back and so on) share a row. Only the menu open/close button is always active; the others are passed to the game unless the menu is on screen.

FH4 reads a wheel's first 32 buttons; a higher button can still be a hotkey.

GrayHorizon 1.0.7

@brmccrary brmccrary released this 20 Oct 23:29

Fixed (FH6): the cockpit view with the steering wheel stayed on the flat screen (#5). FH6 has two cockpit views, with and without the steering wheel, and both are the same kind of camera. On some PCs the mod only recognised one of them, so the view with the wheel stayed flat while the other went to VR. The mod now also recognises the cockpit camera by its name, so both views go to VR. FH5 gets the same change as a precaution. Thank you for the logs that showed it.

New: wheel, joystick and button-box buttons as hotkeys (all three games). In GrayHorizon Settings, click a hotkey box and press the button: it is added as the controller's name and the button number, for example FANATEC Wheel:B12. A hat (D-pad) direction works too (HatUp, HatRight, HatDown, HatLeft), and keys and buttons can share an action: stable_camera=F12, FANATEC Wheel:B12. The game still sees a button you make a hotkey, so pick one the game does not use. See "Wheel, joystick and button-box buttons" in the README.

@brmccrary brmccrary released this 20 Oct 16:19

Fixed (FH4): the game closing right at startup on Steam (#3). The real cause was the Steam overlay, which Steam loads into FH4 even when the overlay is switched off. Its Present hook and the mod's ended up calling each other in a loop until the game ran out of stack, about a second after its window opened (Windows reported 0x80000001 or 0xC0000005 in D3D12Core.dll, nvwgf2umx.dll or XINPUT1_3.dll). The 1.0.5 fix did not reach it. The mod now puts its frame hooks in after the overlay's, as FH5 and FH6 already did. Thank you to everyone who sent logs and crash dumps: they found it.

Steadier on the game's threads (all three games). Every place the mod hooks into the game now checks how much stack room it has, and if it is short, it steps aside for that one call instead of risking a crash. The log notes where the mod runs (stack: lines).

New: the eye timing warp reports itself in the log (all three games). It is hard to see whether the warp (afr_warp) is running, so while you drive the log now says every 5 seconds how many frames it warped, or why it is off: switched off (in GrayHorizon Settings, the ini, or with its hotkey, which saves the setting), half rate, SteamVR (the warp does not run with plain views), or no upscaler. If the warp seems gone, look for the warp (5s): lines in gh4vr.log / gh5vr.log / gh6vr.log.

@brmccrary brmccrary released this 19 Oct 20:45

New: VR on / off in GrayHorizon Settings (all three games). Untick VR and the game plays as normal on the monitor, for example when someone else plays: no VR, no hotkeys, no status window. At the next start the game's resolution goes back to the monitor's if it is still the headset size. Data Out is still passed on to SimHub or a motion rig. Tick it again for VR.

New: "Start VR by itself" (all three games). Untick it and VR only comes on when you press the VR key (F8). In the ini: auto_start=0.

Should fix (all three games): the game closing right at startup on some PCs (#3). The mod needed more stack than the game gives some of its threads, so on some PCs the game quit a second after its window opened, before the splash screen. The mod now uses far less, and the log says how much room the game gives it. If it still happens to you, please attach the log.

Fixed (FH4): short cuts to the flat screen. During some event jumps the game hides the HUD for about three seconds, and the view cut to the flat screen. It now stays in 3D while the cockpit view is running, as FH5 and FH6 have done since 1.0.3.

Clearer message when HDR is on (FH5, FH6). If the game is in HDR and the headset's runtime has no HDR picture format (Quest, for example), the status window and the log now say so in plain words and tell you to turn HDR off in the game's Video settings, instead of only "failed to start".

Crash reports in the log (all three games). If the game ever crashes, the end of the mod's log (gh4vr.log / gh5vr.log / gh6vr.log) now says where. Please attach the log when you report a problem.

New: Game Pass / Microsoft Store support (FH5 and FH6). The mod now works in the Game Pass versions too. Copy the files into the game's Content folder (Xbox app: right-click the game, Manage > Files, Browse) and rename xinput1_3.dll to xinput1_4.dll. The readme has the full steps. On Game Pass the mod keeps its settings, log and HUD layout in Documents\GrayHorizon\FH5 / FH6, because the game cannot write to its own folder. One download serves both Steam and Game Pass.

Fixed (FH5, FH6): eyes swapped after a rewind or a menu. Coming back to 3D, the two eyes could be swapped for about a second (in FH6 after every rewind). It is now put right within about a quarter of a second.

Readme in the download is now README.html. It opens with a double-click in any browser. The licence files are .txt.

The install instructions are now in two parts, one for Steam and one for Game Pass / Microsoft Store.

GrayHorizon 1.0.3

@brmccrary brmccrary released this 18 Oct 17:45

New: eye timing warp (all three games). The eyes are drawn on alternating game frames, so the left eye's picture was one frame older than the right one. Scenery passing the car at speed could then look wrong in depth: roadside objects too near and too small, and the road seeming to rise toward the windows. Before each pair goes to the headset, the left picture is now moved forward to the right eye's moment, using the scene's depth, so both eyes match. Your own cockpit and nearby cars are handled separately.

  • On by default. Ctrl+Shift+F10 in game, or the new "Eye timing warp" checkbox in GrayHorizon Settings, switches it.
  • It needs DLSS (or FSR in FH4) and costs a little GPU time. If you are short of frame rate and never noticed the problem, you can turn it off. See "Eye timing warp" in the readme.

Fixed (FH5, FH6): VR now stays on through some event jumps. Some event jumps hide the HUD for a few seconds while you stay in the cockpit, and VR used to switch to the flat screen during them. It now stays in 3D. Cinematic cameras, Rewind and menus still go to the flat screen as before.

GrayHorizon 1.0.2

Fixed: too bright on Meta Quest and other headsets. The picture is now handed to the headset marked as gamma-encoded (the sRGB form of the game's format), as the OpenXR standard expects. Before, runtimes that follow the standard encoded it a second time, so it looked bright and washed out. Pimax OpenXR and SteamVR look the same as before.

If the picture looks too bright or too dark in your headset, try srgb_swapchain=1 or srgb_swapchain=0 under [settings] in the ini (see the readme).

New: screenshot key (F3). Saves what you see in the headset as a JPEG in Pictures\GrayHorizon, with the HUD elements placed exactly where they float in the cockpit. In menus it saves the flat screen.

Fixed: hotkeys going dead. Windows sometimes drops the mod's keyboard hook for a moment, and if Ctrl, Shift or Alt was let go just then, the mod went on treating it as held, so plain keys like F5 stopped working. The mod now notices and lets go of the key on its own after 10 seconds without keyboard input.
