Under the umbrella of The Honeynet Project, GreedyBear has participated in the Google Summer of Code 2026!

The projects that were implemented during GSoC were very successful - they brought GreedyBear to the next level and hopefully opened career opportunities to the contributors.

If you are interested in being the next GSoC developer for GreedyBear, here are a few tips for you:

  • Get in touch with the community, past participants and the maintainers by joining the Honeynet Slack chat or opening a GitHub discussion.
  • Take a look at past projects and get some inspiration for your own project ideas on the Honeynet site.
  • Check the list of open and unassigned issues. If you want to work on one of them, kindly ask to get assigned in the issue's comment section.
  • Read through our contribution guidelines and make sure to follow them when making your first contribution.

GSoC Application process

0. Get familiar with GSoC

First of all, and if you have not done that yet, read the contributor guide which will allow you to understand all this process and how the program works overall. Refer to its left side menu to quick access sections that may interest you the most, although we recommend you to read everything.

1. Choose a project

For suggested project ideas, that we came up with, please refer to the Honeynet site.

You have your own idea for a GSoC project that is not already listed on the Honeynet site? Great! In this case, it is required to discuss your idea with the mentors in our Honeynet Slack chat or by opening a GitHub discussion. We're always open to new ideas and won't hesitate on choosing them if you demonstrate to be a good candidate!

2. Understand that

  • You're committing to a project and we ask you to publicly publish your weekly progress on GitHub in the official repositories of the project. We'll invite you to the organization, so you can create branches there.
  • We will ask you to give feedback on our mentorship and management continuously. Communication is key to the success of the project.
  • Please tell us if there's any proposed idea that you don't think would fit the timeline or could be boring (yes, we're asking for feedback).

3. Fill out the application form

We ask you to follow Google's guide to writing a proposal and to leverage the Honeynet application template.
