NesTube 1.0.1-alpha.1
Patch release: five bugs found while testing the new interface are fixed.
Status: alpha. The core works and is tested, but interfaces and file formats may still change before 1.0.
Fixes
- Edit Drawing opens the new CAD module. It used to open the legacy Qt editor; now it opens the web drawing module with the piece contour preloaded.
- CAD export/import work. Export PNG, Export DXF and Import DXF were placeholder toasts; they now produce real files (transparent PNG at 1024×1024, minimal R12 DXF, basic DXF import of lines, polylines, circles and arcs).
- CAD dialogs are visible. The confirmation and save dialogs used to render behind the CAD overlay; the modal backdrop and toasts now layer above it.
- No more browser context menu. Right-clicking anywhere in the app showed the WebEngine default menu; the app now blocks it everywhere except text inputs (copy/paste still works).
- Bars can be deleted. The Bars column had no delete action; each bar now has a trash button (with confirmation when it holds pieces, which return to the cut list).
- Material dialog no longer closes on outside clicks. Clicking outside the dialog silently cancelled the selection; now only Cancel, × and Esc close it, and there is a No material option to clear a preselection.
Installation
Windows (installer): run NesTube-1.0.1-alpha.1-setup.exe.
Windows (portable): extract NesTube-1.0.1-alpha.1-windows.zip and run NesTube.exe.
Linux (portable): extract NesTube-1.0.1-alpha.1-linux.zip and run ./NesTube/NesTube.
On Ubuntu/Debian, install the libraries it needs first:

NesTube 1.0.0-alpha.1
First alpha release: a cleaner, modern window on top of the same nesting engine.
Status: alpha. The core works and is tested, but interfaces and file formats may still change before 1.0.
Licensing
NesTube is now distributed under the PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0
(source-available, non-commercial use). Versions published under the GPL-3.0
before this change remain available under the GPL-3.0. Commercial use needs a
separate license — see the README.
What's new
- New interface. NesTube now opens a modern, Figma-style window: a top bar with the six tabs (Jobs, Cuts, Nesting, Costs, Profiles, Stock), panels on the left and right, a floating tool bar on the canvas, and dark and light themes.
- Same engine underneath. Every tab runs the same logic as before: collision checks with the real piece contours (miters included), snap, auto-nest, cut lists, costs, the profile catalogue, stock and jobs. Shortcuts are unchanged: Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y, Ctrl+Q / Ctrl+E to rotate, Ctrl+H / Ctrl+A to flip, Delete, Esc and Ctrl+S.
- Profile image viewer. Profile pictures open full size with zoom, so you can compare sections without leaving the tab.
- AutoCAD-style drawing module for custom profiles: a ribbon, a command line (L, REC, C, A, TR…), typed lengths and angles (
@dx,dy,@length<angle), object snaps (endpoint, midpoint, centre), ORTHO, GRID and dynamic input on the status bar. - Dialogs in the new style. Choosing a material or stock bar, picking the cutting face of a profile, saving a drawn profile and choosing which nestings to export now open inside the new window.
- New logo.
- The classic interface is still there. Start with
--classic(or setNESTUBE_CLASSIC=1) to open the previous Qt window.
Fixes
- Moving a piece back to where it was. A piece grabbed by its middle used to jump so its left end sat under the cursor. Dropping it "back in place" then sent it to another slot, or to the end of the bar. The grab point now stays under the cursor and the piece returns to its own slot.
- Cutting height. After opening a job, the Nesting tab could show one cutting height (for example 40 mm) while laying pieces out with another (80 mm). Both now use the height that is shown.
- Ctrl+click on a piece selects it again (it used to pan the canvas).
- Pieces at the start of a bar return to their exact position instead of 1.5 mm to the right.
- Offcut length. A piece mitered in opposite directions takes its length plus one section height on the bar. Offcuts were measured from the nominal length, so they could be reported, and saved to stock, up to one section height too long. They are now measured from the real contour.
- Bar usage. Mitered pieces that nest into each other could show more than 100 %. Usage is now measured by the area actually cut, in both interfaces.
- Cuts that differ only in their miters (same name and length, other angle or direction) were mixed up when counting, highlighting, editing and on undo. Each placed piece now stays on its own cut.
- Material lost on save. A material picked in Nesting or Costs could be wiped by the unsaved-changes check, and was then missing from the saved job. This also affected the classic interface.
Testing
The new interface was tested by nesting pieces, then picking them up, rotating them in the air and dropping them on the same bar, on another bar and back into their own slot. This ran with and without miters, margin and common cut, and was repeated through the real window with a real mouse. There were no overlaps and no lost pieces. These checks are now part of the automated test suite.

Known limitations
- The download is around 225 MB zipped on Linux, because it includes the web engine that draws the interface (already a third smaller than the first build).
- The settings windows (materials, PDF layout, cost defaults, backups, database) still open in the classic style.
- This build is not code-signed yet, hence the SmartScreen and Gatekeeper warnings.
- The
.nestjobformat and the database layout may change before 1.0.
