Steam Vault v1.1.0

Release date: 2026-10-15
Version Type: Semantic Versioning

✨ Highlights

Steam Vault v1.1.0 introduces native integration with the Community Game Catalog (Steam-Vault-Catalog), high-precision console platform determination for emulated retro games, and a keyless Wikipedia Video Game & Console metadata provider.

With v1.1.0, Steam Vault ships with a precompiled, compressed SQLite catalog seed containing curated multi-platform game entries (catalog_seed.bin). The app matches non-Steam shortcuts and scanned ROMs against this offline catalog for instant title and metadata resolution without external API requests. In addition, emulated games now automatically have their exact console platform identified (GameCube, Wii, PlayStation, Nintendo 64, etc.), displayed as badges in the Platforms view, and written directly into Steam's binary shortcuts.vdf tags for effortless category grouping inside the Steam client.

🚀 Key Improvements & Features

  • Integrated Community Game Catalog (Steam-Vault-Catalog) — Precompiled embedded SQLite catalog seed (src-tauri/src/catalog_seed.bin) with curated multi-platform games for immediate offline title lookup. Background catalog synchronization (sync_online_catalog) from official GitHub releases or custom URLs, plus export/import archive support.
  • High-Precision Console Platform Determination — Automatic detection (determine_console_platform) of specific console hardware (GameCube, Wii, Wii U, Nintendo Switch, N64, SNES, NES, GBA, GBC, GB, NDS, 3DS, PS1, PS2, PS3, PSP, Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, Atari 2600) based on ROM file extensions and emulator paths.
  • Console Platform Badges & UI Indicators — The Platforms view displays dedicated console badges next to emulator instances so users can easily distinguish which console each emulated title belongs to.
  • Automated Steam Shortcut Tagging — Detected console platforms are written directly into binary shortcuts.vdf tags ({"0": "GameCube"}), allowing the native Steam client to group emulated games under their console category, and enabling Steam Vault to ingest them into collections automatically.
  • Wikipedia Video Game & Console Metadata Provider — Keyless MediaWiki wikitext infobox parser (wikipedia_game_lookup) extracting developers, publishers, genres, release year, console platforms, and lead summaries. Serves as a rich fallback metadata provider for retro console ROM shortcuts lacking PC storefront listings.
  • Multi-Platform Operating System Taxonomy — Full support for multi-platform operating systems (windows, macos, linux) and distinct console hardware across catalog records and metadata inspection, with strict validation prohibiting software category labels from platform arrays.

✅ Changed

  • Binary VDF Tag Inspection — Added string accessor as_str() to binary VDF parser (Bvdf) for reliable tag dictionary traversal in shortcuts.vdf.
  • Shortcut Collection Synchronization — Improved non-Steam shortcut collection assignment during import and library scans to automatically load binary tags into collections.
  • Settings Catalog Synchronization — Settings view provides direct status, count, and manual sync controls for the community catalog.

🐛 Fixed

  • Visual Novel Provider ID Typing — Fixed type handling where string IDs from VNDB Kana API could conflict with integer IGDB ID expectations.
  • Console ROM Detection Accuracy — Improved extension-based platform resolution to eliminate ambiguous matches across multi-system emulators like RetroArch.
