Redesign preview 2 (Windows, unofficial)
An early build of the redesign for 64-bit Windows. Unofficial: this is not a VLC release and not made by VideoLAN.
How to use it
Download vlc-redesign-preview-2-win64.zip, unpack it into a new folder and start vlc.exe. Nothing is installed. Settings stay in the folder portable next to vlc.exe; an installed VLC is left alone. SHA256SUMS.txt contains the ZIP's checksum.
What is in it
The player view from Preview 1: the single-row control bar, top bar, framed video, seek preview, and tracks, settings and queue panels.
New in Preview 2:
- A separate preferences window with 13 categories, search, advanced options, and dark/light appearance.
- A keyboard shortcut editor with the nine reference actions. Editing, saving, persistence after restarting, and cancelling a shortcut conflict were checked.
- An expandable equalizer with VLC's ten bands and Preamp. Preset changes, band edits and persistence after restarting were checked.
The preferences and shortcut editor started from dsojevic's VLC fork, then were adapted for this Windows build and compared with the local Figma reference.
The library and remaining dialogs still use VLC 4's original interface. The roadmap and verification notes record what was seen and what remains open.
The ZIP was unpacked and checked with fresh portable settings: video playback at 1440x1080, the preferences window and the shortcut editor were captured and inspected with window messages and PrintWindow. The first launch exceeded the 20-second test timeout; one retry loaded the interface. No QML loading errors were found in that run.
Know before you use it
- It is an experiment and it is vibe-coded: AI assistants write the code, it is tried out in builds, and nobody has reviewed it the way VideoLAN reviews VLC. VLC 4 itself is still in development.
- Preferences remain incomplete. Some Figma rows are omitted because their VLC option, action or preset mapping is unresolved. Native choices remain where the reference does not establish preset values.
- Hover, global shortcut actions, external services and audible equalizer effects were not checked. Most individual settings were not tested for persistence.
- One longer preferences test froze; shorter repeat runs completed, but the cause remains unresolved.
- When the window is closed,
vlc.execan stay behind as a process. Look in Task Manager if it does not start again or the folder cannot be deleted. - Windows may warn before starting it: the build is not signed.
- The first start after unpacking can take longer while Windows checks new files and VLC prepares its plugin cache.
- English only. 64-bit Windows only.

Redesign preview 1 (Windows, unofficial)
An early build of the redesign for 64-bit Windows, for those who want to look at it without building it. Unofficial: this is not a VLC release and not made by VideoLAN.
How to use it
Download vlc-redesign-preview-1-win64.zip, unpack it anywhere and start vlc.exe. Nothing is installed. The settings stay in the folder portable next to vlc.exe, an installed VLC is left alone. To remove it, delete the folder.
What is in it
The player view of the redesign: the single-row control bar, the top bar, the framed video, the seek preview, and the tracks, settings and queue panels. The library and the dialogs are still those of VLC 4. The roadmap says what is done and what is not.
Know before you use it
- It is an experiment and it is vibe-coded: AI assistants write the code, it is tried out by hand, and nobody has reviewed it the way VideoLAN reviews VLC. It is built on VLC 4, which is itself still in development.
- When the window is closed,
vlc.execan stay behind as a process. Look in the Task Manager if it does not start again or the folder cannot be deleted. - Windows may warn before starting it: the build is not signed.
- The very first start after unpacking can take half a minute while Windows checks the new files; later starts take a second or two.
- English only.
