Welcome to the DOS4x wiki!

Originally released in 1988, MS-DOS 4.0 was perhaps one of the less popular editions of DOS. It would take nearly three years for DOS 5.0 to be released, however many people used 3.x or found alternatives where they were able to.

A marked improvement over 3.3, if for no other reason than support for partitions over 32 megabytes, DOS 4 was plagued with issues surrounding memory usage and incomplete support for large disks (by the standards of 2024).

Regardless, it did last and it did provide a sufficent base for running Windows 2 and 3.0, as well as many games and other applications of the late 80's.

I would assert that it provides a stable base for retrocomputing ...meaning exploring apps, enviroments and such of late 80's and early 90's computing. In addition, the open source nature of this release provides an unparalled opportunity to explore, modify ...tinker... with a real-world operating system and its' utilities and gain insight into how things were and see what has lasted to the current day.
