eGPU Optimizations #1071

Description

@rc345ct243tc

I'm running a RX 6700XT on a thundebrolt eGPU dock (Razer Core X, PCIe 3.0 x4). My rest of my laptop's specs are i7 8550U, 16GB RAM, 1TB SSD. I'm running Fedora 35 with kernel 5.16 and Mesa 21.1. I'm using the latest version of Proton-GE.

I'm seeing extremely bad performance on some DX12 games compared to Windows. I've tested Forza Horizon 4 and Forza Horion 5 so far. On FH4, at 1080p on the very low preset, I get around 120 fps in the benchmark in windows, but I was getting around 50 fps on linux.

After doing some digging around on the internet, I found that disabling resizable bar/smart access memory based optimizations would help. A couple of related posts by another user that helped me 1, 2 and 3. My laptop doesn't support resizable bar and doesn't have any options in the bios about it either.

RADV_PERFTEST=nosam didn't help me, but then setting VKD3D_CONFIG=no_upload_hvv boosted the performance in the FH4 benchmark to 70fps. This is an improvement, but is still lagging behind windows by a lot.

I have a couple of question

  1. Are there any other tricks/optimizations I can try to help my situation
  2. Is there too much overhead from Proton/VKD3D that my system isn't able to handle? I doubt this is the case cause my CPU usage isn't anywhere close to 90% while running the game.
  3. Is the way in which VKD3D works inherently going to cause problems on a thunderbolt eGPU setup.
