Configuration Guide

Complete guide to configuring MBR Cookie Consent for your WordPress website.

Quick Setup (5 Minutes)

Minimal configuration to get started:

  1. Navigate to Cookie Consent > Settings in WordPress admin
  2. Choose your Banner Layout (Bar, Box, or Popup)
  3. Set your Primary Color to match your brand
  4. Update the Banner Heading if desired
  5. Click Save Settings
  6. Test in a private browser window

That's it! The plugin works with sensible defaults out of the box.

Banner Appearance

Banner Layout

Choose how your cookie banner appears to visitors.

Available Layouts:

How to change:

  1. Go to Cookie Consent > Settings
  2. Scroll to Button Text section
  3. Update the desired button labels
  4. Click Save Settings

Multi-language sites: You can use translation plugins or manually set text for your primary language.

Policy Links

Add links to your Privacy Policy and Cookie Policy.

Privacy Policy Link

  • Checkbox: "Show Privacy Policy link in banner"
  • Link Text: Default "Privacy Policy" (customizable)
  • URL: Full URL to your privacy policy page

Cookie Policy Link

  • Checkbox: "Show Cookie Policy link in banner"
  • Link Text: Default "Cookie Policy" (customizable)
  • URL: Full URL to your cookie policy page

How to configure:

  1. Navigate to Cookie Consent > Settings
  2. Scroll to Policy Links section
  3. Check the box for each policy you want to display
  4. Enter custom link text (or keep defaults)
  5. Enter the full URL to each policy page

  6. Click Save Settings

Display:

  • Links appear below the banner description
  • Separated by " | " if both enabled
  • Open in new tab (target="_blank")

Button Display

Control which buttons appear in your cookie banner.

Show Reject All Button

  • Default: Enabled (recommended for GDPR)
  • Purpose: Allows users to reject non-essential cookies
  • GDPR: Required for compliance in most EU countries
  • Effect: When disabled, users can only Accept or Customize

Show Customize Button

  • Default: Enabled (recommended)
  • Purpose: Opens modal with granular cookie category control
  • Effect: When disabled, users can only Accept or Reject all

Show X (Close) Button

  • Default: Disabled
  • Purpose: Allows closing banner without deciding
  • Italian Law: Required by Italian regulations
  • Effect: Adds X button in top-right corner
  • Behavior: Closes banner without saving consent (banner reappears on next visit)

Recommendations:

Behavior Settings

Reload Page on Consent

  • Default: Disabled
  • Purpose: Automatically reload page after user accepts/rejects cookies
  • Use Case: When you need cookies to take effect immediately
  • Downside: Interrupts user experience

When to enable:

  • Third-party scripts that need immediate loading
  • Heavy analytics or marketing tag implementations
  • Dynamic content that changes based on consent

When to disable:

  • Simple cookie implementations
  • Better user experience (no reload interruption)
  • Scripts can load dynamically without refresh

Cookie Expiry

Cookie Expiry Days

  • Default: 365 days (1 year)
  • Range: 1-730 days (up to 2 years)
  • Purpose: How long to remember user's consent choice
  • Recommendation: 365 days (industry standard)

Legal Considerations:

  • GDPR: No specific requirement, but 12 months is common
  • CCPA: No specific requirement
  • Best Practice: 6-12 months, then re-ask for consent

How it works:

When a user accepts/rejects cookies, their choice is stored in a cookie called mbr_cc_consent that expires after the specified days.

After expiry:

  • Cookie banner appears again
  • User must re-confirm consent
  • Old consent is logged for records

CCPA Settings

California Consumer Privacy Act compliance options.

Enable CCPA Mode

  • Default: Disabled
  • Purpose: Adds "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information" link
  • When to enable: If you have California (USA) visitors

CCPA Link Text

  • Default: "Do Not Sell or Share My Personal Information"
  • Customizable: Change to match your wording
  • Display: Appears in banner below description

How CCPA mode works:

  1. User clicks CCPA link
  2. Opts out of data sharing/selling
  3. Choice is logged
  4. Marketing/tracking cookies blocked

GDPR + CCPA Together:

You can enable both! The plugin handles:

  • EU visitors: GDPR consent flow

Revisit Consent Button

Floating button that allows users to change their cookie preferences anytime.

Show Revisit Consent Button

  • Default: Enabled (recommended)
  • Purpose: Accessibility and GDPR requirement
  • Display: Floating button on bottom-left or bottom-right of screen
  • Icon: Cookie icon (🍪)

Button Text

  • Default: "Cookie Settings"
  • Customizable: Change to your preference
  • Examples: "Privacy", "Cookies", "Manage Cookies", "Cookie Preferences"

Floating Button Text Color

  • Default: #000000 (black)
  • Purpose: Text color for the floating button
  • Recommendation: High contrast with background

How it works:

  1. After user accepts/rejects, banner hides
  2. Floating button appears
  3. User can click anytime to reopen preferences
  4. Full modal with category controls appears

  • Always keep enabled (GDPR recommends easy access)

Database Consent Logging

All consent events are automatically logged to the database.

What's logged:

  • Timestamp
  • User IP (anonymized option available)
  • Consent choices (categories accepted/rejected)
  • User agent (browser/device info)
  • Page URL where consent was given

Access logs:

  1. Navigate to Cookie Consent > Consent Logs
  2. View all consent records
  3. Export to CSV for compliance records

Data retention: Logs are kept indefinitely unless manually deleted.

Script Blocking Behavior

How script blocking works:

  1. User visits your site
  2. If no consent, ALL scripts in blocked list are prevented from loading
  3. User accepts cookies
  4. Scripts from accepted categories load immediately
  5. Consent choice is saved

Categories:

  • Necessary: Always load (cannot be disabled by user)
  • Analytics: Google Analytics, tracking scripts

Saving Your Configuration

After making any changes:

  1. Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page
  2. Click the Save Settings button
  3. Wait for "Settings saved successfully" confirmation
  4. Page will reload with new settings

Settings auto-reload: The page automatically reloads after saving to ensure fresh JavaScript/CSS loads.

Test your changes:

  1. Open a new incognito/private browser window
  2. Visit your website
  3. Verify banner appears with new settings
  4. Test all buttons (Accept, Reject, Customize)
  5. Verify colors, text, and layout match your configuration

Troubleshooting Configuration

Settings not saving

Solution:

  1. Hard refresh the settings page (Ctrl+Shift+R)
  2. Check browser console for JavaScript errors
  3. Try a different browser
  4. Temporarily disable other plugins

Banner not reflecting changes

Solution:

  1. Clear your browser cache
  2. Test in incognito/private window
  3. Clear WordPress cache (if using cache plugin)
  4. Hard refresh the frontend (Ctrl+Shift+R)

Colors not applying

Solution:

  1. Check if theme CSS is overriding plugin styles

  1. Click the colored square next to each setting
  2. Use the color picker or enter hex code
  3. Preview updates in real-time

Add your logo to the cookie consent banner.

Logo Settings:

  • Recommended Size: 150x150px (square)

Saving Your Configuration

Troubleshooting Configuration
