MZM Recompiled Beta 4 is an independent public runtime test and community feedback release. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Nintendo.

Platform Status
Linux x86_64 TESTED (SDL2, OpenGL, glibc desktop session)
Windows x64 CROSS-BUILT AND STATICALLY VALIDATED (16 MiB stack reserve, native SDL2/OpenGL/Shell32 integration). Executable is unsigned; COMMUNITY RUNTIME VALIDATION REQUESTED.

What's New in Beta 4

  • Support & Community Reporting Module:
    • In-launcher Support page accessible directly from Home and About screens.
    • One-click Report Issue on GitHub: automatically prepares a structured Markdown report on your clipboard and opens the repository issue tracker with the official Beta bug report template.
    • Dedicated buttons to Copy Diagnostic Info, Copy Bug Report, Copy Build Info, Copy Log Path, Open Log Folder, Open latest.log, and Open Feedback Guide.
    • Safe log preservation: automatically archives previous.log and last-crash.log across game launches, recording whether the prior run exited cleanly, crashed, or terminated unexpectedly.
    • Problem area selector with component categories for streamlined issue categorization.
    • Compiled build identity (release channel, MZM commit, GBARecomp commit) visible in launcher and logs.
  • Privacy & Safety by Design:
    • No telemetry and no automatic data upload: nothing is transmitted automatically, and no network sockets are held by the launcher.
    • Automatic path redaction: user home directories are replaced by ~ (Linux) or %USERPROFILE% (Windows) in all copied diagnostics and log displays.
    • ROM and BIOS paths and contents are never exposed or copied.
    • The web browser opens only upon explicit user action.
  • Repository Reporting Infrastructure:
    • Official GitHub Issue Form activated on the default main branch.
    • Triage labels configured (bug, beta).
  • All Beta 3 Enhancements Retained:
    • Full-speed Original Metroid (NES) static recompilation and save persistence.
    • In-game Enhancements menu (ESC): CRT shaders, integer scaling, color profiles, borderless fullscreen (Alt+Enter).
    • Presentation refresh rate synchronization.

How to Report a Problem

If you encounter a bug, graphical glitch, audio issue, or crash:

  1. Open the launcher and click Support.
  2. Select the Problem area dropdown.
  3. Click Report Issue on GitHub (the bug report template and hardware summary are automatically copied to your clipboard).
  4. Paste into the GitHub issue form.
  5. If useful, attach latest.log (click Open Log Folder to locate it; review it first to ensure no sensitive personal data is present).
  6. Never upload ROM, BIOS, or copyrighted game files.

Windows Security & Antivirus Guidance

The Windows executable is unsigned and built from source using an open toolchain. SmartScreen, antivirus reputation filters, or managed device policies may show an alert.

  • Do not disable your antivirus.
  • If flagged, please report: your Windows version, the security product name, the exact detection/warning message, a screenshot, and the SHA-256 hash of the ZIP and MZMRecomp.exe.
  • On school or employer-managed PCs, please test on an authorized personal computer instead of attempting to bypass administrative policy.

ROM and BIOS Requirements

No ROM, BIOS, or copyrighted game assets are included or offered.
Users must supply their own legally obtained, supported files:

  • Supported ROM: Metroid: Zero Mission (USA, revision 0), SHA-1: 5de8536afe1f0078ee6fe1089f890e8c7aa0a6e8
  • Supported BIOS: GBA BIOS, SHA-1: 300c20df6731a33952ded8c436f7f186d25d3492

Both files must show Valid in the launcher before PLAY is enabled.

Notes on Emulation, Display and Audio

  • Original Metroid (NES): Follows the original game's progression (unlocked after beating Zero Mission). NES testing is optional and no completed save is included.
  • Display Refresh vs Gameplay FPS: The internal game simulation runs strictly at its original ~59.73 Hz. Monitor Refresh mode presents repeated frames at your monitor frequency; it does not produce high-FPS gameplay frames or perform frame interpolation.
  • Audio Output: Audio activity and synchronization are covered by regression tests, but audio fidelity has not been validated against an external hardware oracle.

Source Reproducibility

All components are fully public and reproducible:
