User Interface (UI) in Super Mario Bros. (NES)

The user interface in Super Mario Bros. (1985) for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) is minimalist yet effective, providing essential information without distracting the player. It consists of the following elements:

📌 UI Elements

  1. Player Score (MARIO 000000)
    • Located in the top-left corner.
    • Represents the accumulated score by collecting coins, defeating enemies, and completing levels.

UI Super Mario

  1. Number of Coins (⭑ × 00)
    • Displayed next to the coin icon.
    • Increases with each collected coin. Reaching 100 grants an extra life.

UI Super Mario

  1. Current World and Level (WORLD 1-1)

    • Positioned at the top center of the screen.
    • Indicates the player's progress within the game.
  2. Remaining Time (TIME 400)

    • Located in the top-right corner.
    • Counts down. If it reaches 0, Mario loses a life.
  3. Number of Lives (M × 3 or similar)

    • Usually shown at the start of a game or after losing a life.
    • Indicates how many chances the player has before Game Over.

UI Super Mario

🎨 Design and Aesthetics

  • Pixel font: Readable and in uppercase to ensure clarity on low-resolution CRT screens.
  • Contrasting colors: White on a black background for better visibility.
  • Fixed layout: The UI is always at the top, leaving the bottom for gameplay action.

⚙️ Functionality

  • Persistent: Always visible, never hidden or repositioned.
  • Real-time feedback: Updates dynamically when collecting coins, defeating enemies, or progressing through levels.
  • Non-interactive: Informative but does not allow direct player interaction.

The UI of Super Mario Bros. is a classic example of functional game design, displaying essential information without cluttering the screen or interfering with gameplay.
