v1.2.10
Headphones at boot on the 1st gen Show 5 and the Show 8, and headphones on the Show 8.
- A plug in the headphone jack no longer stops the boot on the 1st gen Show 5 and the Show 8. The jack driver turned on its interrupt before it was ready, so a plug already in at power-on (or across a restart) kept firing it and the unit stayed on the logo. This is a kernel fix, so it comes as a new boot image for each:
techo5-boot-checkers-v1.2.10.imgandtecho5-boot-crown-v1.2.10.img. Put it on over SSH as in Updating the boot image. It keeps v1.0.1's camera fix. Thanks to @tUDy-or-else for the report (#118). - Headphones on the Show 8. Its jack was never used: sound stayed on the speaker with something plugged in. Now it moves to the jack and back like the 1st gen Show 5, and the Show 8 has the Audio output choice (Automatic, Speaker, Headphones, Both).
Tested on a 1st gen Show 5 and a Show 8: restarts and cold starts with a plug in, plugging in and out while playing, and the mute button.
The 2nd gen Show 5 has no jack and needs nothing new; this update changes nothing for it.

The boot images' kernel (Linux 4.9, GPL-2.0) is built by tools/linux/build-kernel.sh from the LineageOS kernel source (amazon-oss) with the patches in tools/linux/patches; their rescue environment is unchanged from v1.0.1.
v1.2.9
The clock in a corner, and help from Home Assistant with the wake word.
- Clock position for every clock style. Bottom left and Bottom right now work for Big, Flip, LED, Analog, Words, Sun, Binary and Glow, not just Classic, so a photo's middle stays clear. Each style is laid out for the corner. Dashboard, Agenda and World are whole-screen pages and stay as they are.
- Wake word on Home Assistant (off by default). The Show sends its microphone audio to Home Assistant's own wake word engine (openWakeWord, for example) while it's idle, so you can use any wake word Home Assistant can run. The Show's own wake words keep working alongside. Everything said in the room goes to Home Assistant while this is on, about 32 KB a second.
- Confirm wake with Home Assistant (off by default), with a Confirm threshold. A first wake word the Show isn't sure of (between the Confirm threshold and the Wake word threshold) is checked by Home Assistant's engine first, using about 2 to 3.5 seconds of audio. If it doesn't hear the word, nothing happens. It helps with wake words said with an accent the model didn't learn, and with sounds close to the word. A confirmed wake chimes about half a second later. Thanks to @anthony0585 for the idea (#129).
- Both need a wake word engine in Home Assistant, picked in the voice assistant the Show uses. See Wake word on Home Assistant.
- New docs: training a wake word of your own, in any language, and a contributing guide (#128).
Nothing to do after updating.

v1.2.8
Fewer false wakes, and Russian on the screen.
- A wake by mistake ends quietly. When the Show wakes and nobody says anything, it now goes back to sleep without the error chime and the red ring. When all it hears after the wake word is what speech-to-text writes for noise ("Thank you.", "You"), it doesn't answer. Only the wake word's own turns end this way: an answer to a question Home Assistant asked, or to a follow-up, is always heard, so "Yeah." still works there. Thanks to @RogerSero for the report (#127).
- Wake word threshold, called Wake word sensitivity before. It always worked as a threshold, so a lower number wakes more easily, not less. If the Show wakes by mistake, raise it a step at a time (0.90, 0.93, 0.95). The Stop word's setting is renamed the same way. Your settings and automations keep working: only the names changed.
- Last wake score, a new diagnostic sensor in Home Assistant: how high the last wake scored. A wake by mistake that scored 0.91 is gone at 0.93.
- Russian as a screen language: the clock's date, the weather, the forecast and the words the screen listens for. Thanks, roman-kozachenko (#126).

v1.2.7
Notifications from Home Assistant, a choice of fonts, a fixed network address, live camera video, and the Spotify slider and the Show's volume moving together.
- Notifications from Home Assistant. The
notifyaction puts up a card with a title and a message, andnotify_pictureputs up a picture or a camera with a caption. Either can chime and be said aloud, and the Show tells Home Assistant when one is tapped, dismissed or runs out. A routine picture waits behind a camera somebody is watching instead of replacing it, and the chime waits for a reply that's being spoken. See docs/actions.md. Thanks, wonderslug (#115). - What the Show plays, as sensors in Home Assistant: Now playing source, title, artist, album and state (playing, paused or idle), for AirPlay, Spotify, DLNA, Music Assistant, Bluetooth and the radio. Thanks, maxvaega (#123).
- The Spotify app's slider and the Show's volume move together. The slider shows the Show's real level, also after the buttons, your voice or Home Assistant change it, and moving the slider sets the Show to that level. During quiet hours, neither Spotify's nor Music Assistant's slider can turn the Show up past the night volume. Not yet tested with a real Spotify account, so please tell us on #125 how it works. Thanks to @frebbelio for the report.
- A choice of fonts for the screen: Go (as before), Inter, MuseoModerno, Exo, Overpass, Saira, Comic Neue, Open Sans and Google Sans Flex, under Screen font in Home Assistant, on the setup page, and in the screen's settings (#116). Thanks to @kevin909867 and Reddit for the suggestions.
- Fonts of your own for Korean, Chinese, Japanese and anything else the bundled fonts don't have: upload a font on the setup page (Screen & Photos), or copy it to the device's fonts folder. It's only used for the characters the chosen font lacks (#122). Thanks to @saya6k for the report.
- A fixed network address, set on the screen, on the setup page (Connections → Network address), or with the
network_addressaction. A new address is tried first and only kept if it works. If the router stops answering, the Show falls back to an address from the router and goes back to the fixed one once it can. Thanks, mawi13 (#107). - Live camera video (off by default): with Live camera video on, a camera Home Assistant can stream plays as live video with its sound. A camera's own RTSP address can be set for its picture and sound on the setup page, close to live. A camera's login is only ever sent protected (Digest). Thanks, mawi13 (#108, #110).
- "Play the sounds of rain" has a ready-made automation in docs/actions.md (#120).
Nothing to do after updating. Live camera video, the fixed address and the fonts stay off or as they were until you choose them.

v1.2.6
Phones can play to the Show, a tap at night can open the dashboard, and Night mode starts when you turn it on.
- A phone can play to the Show over Bluetooth. The Show now offers itself as a speaker, and a phone stays connected after pairing instead of dropping after a second or two. While pairing, the Show shows the same six-digit code as the phone, so you can see it's your phone that joined. If you paired a phone before, forget the Show on the phone and pair again. Not yet tested with every phone, so please report back on #105. Thanks to @EcoDeving for the detailed report.
- A tap at night can open the dashboard. With Tap on the clock set to Dashboard, a tap on the night light or the night clock opens it at the night light's level, to turn on a light in the dark, say. The night screen comes back when it closes. With any other choice, the night screen still ignores a tap (#84). Thanks to @paolofaz for the idea.
- Night mode starts as soon as it's turned on. Turned on from Home Assistant, the night no longer waits for 90 seconds without a touch, which an automation started by a tap on the Show's own dashboard always ran into (#117). Thanks to @pavoni for the photos.
- Home Assistant can see when an alarm or a timer is ringing. New sensors: Sounding, Alarm sounding, Timer sounding, and Sounding what, which names the ring. Thanks, wonderslug (#114).
- A drawn dashboard says where it looked for Home Assistant. If Home Assistant moved, run the
home_assistantaction again with its new address (#118). - The call page on a Show 8 no longer puts the caller's name over the "Alarm ringing" note.
Nothing to do after updating, apart from pairing a phone again if you want it to play to the Show.

v1.2.5
A doorbell chime for Reolink doorbells, and a settings lock that leaves alarms open to everyone.
- The device can be a Reolink doorbell's chime. With the doorbell on a Reolink Home Hub or NVR and ONVIF turned on there, choose its camera under Doorbell on the setup page. A press of the button rings a classic three-tone door chime and puts the doorbell's camera up for a minute, with no Home Assistant needed. During a call there's no chime and no camera, just "Someone's at the door" on the call's page. Each press also sends an
esphome.techo5_doorbellevent to Home Assistant. See docs/setup.md, "A doorbell". - The settings lock locks settings, not the whole screen. With a PIN set, the settings open for everyone. Alarms and timers, the volume, bass and treble, the microphone, the wake sound, the sleep timer and the brightness change with a tap. Everything else shows a padlock and asks for the PIN, and the PIN pad says which setting it's for (#106). Thanks to @tfitts for the proposal.
- No more LED ring controls on a device without one. The Show had a "ring" page in Home Assistant with the LED ring light and three ring effects, all of which did nothing. They're gone from the Show, and stay on the Echo Dot. Home Assistant keeps the old "ring" device as unavailable until you delete it.
- A device without Home Assistant gets its Wi-Fi back after a missed key change. The Wi-Fi watcher now also works on a device Home Assistant isn't connected to, going by the network's own traffic. Thanks, musselmanjoey (#85).

v1.2.4
Back on Wi-Fi after the router changes channel, and streamed dashboards that don't freeze.
- A device rejoins Wi-Fi after the router moves its 5 GHz channel. After moving to a strong 5 GHz radio, the device kept looking only on that channel, so a router on automatic channels (radar on a DFS channel, a channel scan) left it off the network until it was unplugged. Now the channel lock comes off a minute or two after the link is lost. The network watchdog also no longer trusts an address on its own: three minutes without a Wi-Fi link counts as down, so Wi-Fi is restarted, and the 15-minute reboot applies as it does with no address (#111). Thanks to @cgradl for the detailed report.
- A streamed dashboard no longer freezes when the screen comes back to it. A dashcast tab picked up again after the screen went away stayed hidden in Chrome, sent no new pictures, and its taps piled up unread. Tabs now stay shown, a tab that stops answering is closed, and the screen reconnects to a fresh one within a second or two. This needs the new dashcast image:
docker compose pull && docker compose up -d(#112). Thanks to @ablig77 for the detailed report. - A card's tap can run one of a device's own ESPHome actions. A drawn dashboard card whose tap runs an
esphome.*action (showing a camera on a device, say) failed, because the card's entity was added to the call. Thanks, mawi13 (#109).
Nothing to do after updating, apart from pulling the dashcast image if you stream dashboards.

v1.2.3
Music Assistant groups in step, and wake words in the diagnostics.
- Music Assistant and Sendspin groups stay in step. The device now places audio by its sound card's real output delay rather than a fixed margin, so it no longer plays ahead of the other speakers in a group. It also tells Music Assistant it is ready only once its clock has settled, a second or two after it connects. Thanks to @hodapp.
- Download diagnostics carries your wake words. The setup page's General → Download diagnostics now has the last 100 wake word detections and near misses from the log, with their scores, so a device that wakes by mistake hours ago still shows it. It is the file to attach to an issue, and the docs now point there instead of to SSH.
- Radio scripts in the docs: a sample that plays a stream address, a Radio Browser station or a TuneIn station through Music Assistant (install guide, Radio).

v1.2.2
Long press for a light's colors and a speaker's music, the coming days at the foot of the Dashboard clock, and quieter talk to a doorbell.
Dashboard
- A long press on a light opens its whites and colors. Slide along either band and the light follows your finger. Thanks to @mawi13.
- A long press on a media player opens its music and speakers: play, pause and skip, its volume, the speakers it can be grouped with, and, with Music Assistant, your favorite playlists and radio stations. The favorites need the device's Home Assistant token to belong to an administrator; with any other token the sheet says so and shows the rest. Thanks to @mawi13.
- Slide along a media player to set its volume, as you already could for a light's brightness. An idle player now takes a tap too.
- Commands from the dashboard reach Home Assistant in order. Two sent at once, like a volume slide and a tap, could arrive the wrong way round and Home Assistant refused one. Thanks to @mawi13.
- The Dashboard clock style's coming days sit at the foot of the screen, leaving the middle free for a tap that starts Assist. With the Call button showing, the row narrows so Today isn't covered. Thanks to @Uthrom.
Cameras
- Talk sends your voice to the camera 12 dB quieter than the voice assistant hears it. At the old level a doorbell's small speaker distorted and its own microphone picked the sound back up (#60).
Nothing to do after updating.

v1.2.1
Dashboard pictures you can tap, an agenda from the next events, an old-phone ring for calls, and updates that get through on a slow connection.
Dashboard
- A picture card does what its tap_action says (navigate, perform-action, toggle), so a page of rooms as photos can open the rooms. Thanks to @mawi13.
- A tap set up in Home Assistant to ask for confirmation no longer runs on a single tap. Such a card is just shown, so a lock or a garage door can't be opened by a stray touch.
- A grid of pictures with columns set is drawn as a gallery, the pictures side by side. Pictures fill their frame instead of being squeezed. A picture of an odd shape still draws.
- The Dashboard clock style's next events look a week ahead, and a tap on them opens a new agenda: the next two weeks in one list, by day. Thanks to @Uthrom.
Calls
- Calls can ring like an old desk phone. The new Call ring setting (settings, or the "Call ring" select in Home Assistant) picks Old phone or Chime. Old phone is the new default; pick Chime for the ring there was before.
Updates
- An update on a slow or patchy connection keeps going instead of failing after 10 minutes. It picks up where it left off, on the next try or the next press of Install, and the whole file is still checked before anything is installed.
- If an update download crawls while the Wi-Fi looks fine, the device reconnects its Wi-Fi once (at most every 6 hours). A Wi-Fi link that went slow after a few days running was why some updates kept failing.
- This helps from the next update on. If this update keeps failing on a device that has been running a long time, unplug it for a few seconds, then press Install. The Restart button in Home Assistant isn't enough, because it doesn't reset the Wi-Fi.
New in Home Assistant: the Call ring select. Nothing is renamed or removed.
Nothing to do after updating.
