Folder sources: index loose files next to your repos
indexio add <folder> now registers the whole folder as a source and indexes what git doesn't cover:
- Repositories inside it are indexed normally (same as
indexio repo add). - Loose files next to them — notes, configs, scripts, SQL, logs — are indexed by content, searchable with
code_search,code_grepandrecall. - Documents (PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EPUB…) that have no text layer are indexed by filename, so a search for the document's name finds it.
- Exclusions (
--exclude <name>, repeatable) are remembered and merged acrossaddcalls — point a folder at a messy workspace and keep secrets and vendored trees out. - Nested git checkouts inside the folder are not double-indexed; each repo stays one entry.
PDF text extraction — opt-in (--pdf-text)
For RAG-style projects where PDFs carry the knowledge (exported reports, manuals, test papers):
indexio add <folder> --pdf-text
- PDFs with a text layer are indexed by content, up to the same per-file cap as other text files.
code_greplands on the right lines inside the PDF; word-searches and hybrid questions find them. - Off by default — scans, image PDFs and anything without extractable text keep their name-only entry; nothing changes unless you ask.
- Size-capped (64 MB) and time-capped (20 s per file) with a panic guard, so a corrupt or hostile PDF can't stall or crash indexing.
- Pure Rust extraction (pdf-extract); no external tools, no network.
- Hooks still let a direct Read of a PDF through — indexed text has no layout or images.
Upgrade instructions
npm / pnpm:
npm update -g indexio
Direct download (install.ps1 / install.sh): re-run the installer — on Windows it renames the running binary aside and copies the new one over it.
Then:
indexio hook install
and restart your agent sessions. MCP servers pick the new binary on restart; the index format is unchanged, so old sessions read the new data without a rebuild.
Also in this release
- README: upgrade section, "Folders with repositories and other files" walkthrough, hooks table now lists all four hooks.
- Windows installer no longer fails with "being used by another process" when upgrading over a running server.
