@Icehellionx Icehellionx released this 05 Oct 03:33

v1.2.9

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.9 folds the mounted-CD workaround from issue #1 into Wine setup and makes the seven-effect sound adjustment automatic.

  • Setup detects Wine, uses the CD-folder picker as its primary media action and automatically selects a unique readable mapped MW3 disc with the retail volume label and installer cabinets. Ambiguous or missing discs remain a folder selection.
  • Under Wine, mount your own CD or ISO/BIN/CUE image with Linux tools and keep its CD-ROM mapping available while playing. Setup and launcher avoid unsupported Windows ISO-mount commands and preserve external mounts.
  • Mounted Pirate's Moon cabinet folders use the same borrowed-media session; existing RIP folder installation remains supported.
  • Setup always lowers the seven unusually loud base-game effects. The checkbox is removed. Exact-hash originals remain in MechWarrior 3/OriginalSoundArchives, with Use-SoundLevelCandidate.ps1 for restoration. Pirate's Moon effects and CD music are unchanged.
  • The r18 graphics wrapper, game executable transformations and CD-audio backend are unchanged.

Verification: all ten source checks pass. The exact release setup passes Windows base ISO/borrowed-folder, read-only Pirate's Moon RIP, real audio playback/protocol and cleanup smoke; 65 payload hashes, 66 payload files and zero forbidden files. Wine 11/Mono passes packaged runtime detection, CD-picker geometry, automatic mapped-drive selection and fresh both-game folder installation, including leveled-sound and original-backup hashes, committed game/wrapper identities, shortcuts and staging cleanup. Defender scans of setup, extracted payload and both installed smoke trees complete with enabled protection and current intelligence, with no new detection.

Wine/Linux remains experimental. The previous VM gameplay results apply to the unchanged game/runtime binaries; this release adds installation-policy verification, not new gameplay coverage. Native DDrawCompat still crashes under Wine; the documented Wine built-in graphics/native audio route remains necessary. Hardware Linux GPUs, movies, campaign-save reload, Linux controllers/force feedback, Proton/Steam Deck, real DPI/multi-monitor, HOTAS and original Pirate's Moon ISO coverage remain open.

The installer is unsigned. Keep security protections enabled and verify SHA256SUMS.txt. Upgrade by uninstalling while retaining pilots, then reinstalling into the preserved-save directory; in-place repair is unsupported. The previous v1.2.8 release remains available for rollback.

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.8

Choose a tag to compare

@Icehellionx Icehellionx released this 03 Oct 09:27

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.8 adds launcher Settings, Help/Credits and sanitized Diagnostics, corrects Pirate's Moon edge repair, and improves installation on clean Windows systems and Wine.

  • New per-game graphics Settings preserve profile ownership and reject conflicts with running games, overrides and recovery state. Qualified choices are 4x MSAA and off; filtering remains fixed.
  • Typed Windows Shell Links replace dynamic WScript finalization, fixing the reported Wine shortcut failure.
  • Read-only PM media installation now replaces only its owned staged executable without changing source media.
  • Source-built static-runtime ZipperFixup removes the clean-system VC++ runtime dependency; patch outputs and r18 graphics wrapper are unchanged.
  • PM now enables the existing four-pixel presentation edge repair, verified against the orange top/left seam on physical Windows hardware.
  • Runtime loader failures are reported without futile graphics retries; modeless Cancel/Close behavior is corrected.
  • Installer prompts and README explicitly require game copies the user owns. No game ISO or RIP is included.

Verification: all ten source-gate checks and failure-path tests passed. The final setup passes owned base ISO/borrowed-folder, read-only PM RIP, audio, patching, payload and cleanup smoke. All 65 manifest entries verified, 66 payload files, zero forbidden files. Defender scanned setup, extracted payload and both installed smoke trees with enabled protection and intelligence 1.459.530.0; all four scans completed with no new detection. Earlier Windows VM GUI/uninstall/reinstall and physical-host rendering checks cover the unchanged runtime contracts. User confirms Windows Alt-Tab, analog sticks, repeated instant missions and sound effects.

Wine/Linux remains experimental: Ubuntu 24.04 / Wine 11 passes both-game installation, two instant missions per game, real pilot reload and audio probes using Wine built-in graphics and native winmm. PM launcher gameplay passes. Native DDrawCompat crashes under Wine; Windows AA/scaling/edge enhancements are unavailable there. Wine helper cleanup required bounded termination. Hardware Linux GPUs, movies, campaign-save reload, Linux controllers/FFB, Proton/Steam Deck, real DPI/multi-monitor and HOTAS remain coverage gaps.

The installer is unsigned; an Unknown Publisher/SmartScreen reputation warning remains possible. Keep security protections enabled and verify SHA256SUMS.txt. Upgrade by uninstalling while retaining pilots, then reinstalling into the preserved-save directory; in-place repair is unsupported.

@Icehellionx Icehellionx released this 24 Sep 22:47

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.7

This update adds a reversible, experimental sound-effect level option and a mounted-disc-folder route for Wine users. The installer still requires user-supplied game media.

Changes

  • Setup can use a readable already mounted MechWarrior 3 disc folder. The launcher reuses that folder without trying to eject its mount. On Linux, the mount must remain available as a CD-ROM mapping in the Wine prefix. A complete Wine install and game launch have not been verified.
  • Setup offers an unchecked experimental option to lower seven unusually loud base-game sound effects. It derives the changed archives from exact-hash US v1.2 game media during installation, retains byte-identical originals under MechWarrior 3\OriginalSoundArchives, and includes Use-SoundLevelCandidate.ps1 to restore them. No original game audio is included in the downloadable setup. Pirate's Moon sound and CD music are unchanged.
  • The launcher adds a CONTROLS action with the game's remapping steps and a way to open Windows Game Controllers for joystick calibration. Setup and launch continue to check writable per-game keys storage; the installed-tree test checks the original DirectInput/force-feedback files.

Verification

  • The installer build and real MechWarrior 3 ISO plus Pirate's Moon RIP smoke tests passed: 66 payload files, zero forbidden files. The base ISO test covered mount/eject, borrowed-folder validation, extraction, startup videos, official patching, and installed-game checks.
  • Both leveled sound banks matched their reviewed hashes. The original banks were restored byte-for-byte in the smoke-installed game. Payload manifest and setup checksum matched the final build.
  • Microsoft Defender custom scans of the setup, extracted payload, and both smoke-installed game trees found no new detection with signature 1.459.384.0 (20 before and after).
  • Setup SHA-256: 3DCC39E89AADBEFCD58243DFBE97F689736EA4D6CE6DE0B8CB33268283B4BEAC.

Still to verify

The reported launch sound has not been confirmed by listening in its mission. Physical joystick axis binding and force feedback, a complete Wine install/launch, and the unresolved RTX 5080 field report need tests on affected hardware. The sound option reduces gain; it cannot repair clipping already present in the retail samples.

@Icehellionx Icehellionx released this 14 Sep 01:36

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.6

This compatibility update addresses community-reported setup, media, audio, input, display, and removal problems.

Changes

  • Pirate's Moon installations accept the common ISO-version ZIP containing a mixed-mode BIN/CUE image. Setup validates and extracts the ZIP, converts only the ISO 9660 Mode-1 data volume to a temporary mountable image, installs the disc, and removes staging afterward. The verified true-disc executable receives a deterministic 12-byte runtime-path normalization plus two disc-check branch changes; the partly normalized RIP retail executable needs only the two branch changes. Both become the same verified no-disc executable, and the user's media is never modified.
  • ISO-derived Pirate's Moon installs now receive the 108-byte DATA.TAG application marker normally created by the original InstallShield setup. Its absence caused repeatable 0xC0000005 startup failures; the corrected exact BIN/CUE archive output holds a real Pirate's Moon game window stable under the launcher.
  • Setup creates writable keys directories, and the launcher checks them before every launch. This removes the missing-storage failure that prevented fresh installs from saving keyboard, mouse, joystick, and HOTAS mappings while preserving existing profiles. Older unwritable Program Files installs are diagnosed without blocking gameplay.
  • Both games keep the required 640×480 startup-video mode and the tested 1024×768 gameplay mode, which DDrawCompat scales to the desktop resolution. Changing resolution from the legacy in-game menu remains unsupported because suppressing 640×480 also prevents startup videos from opening.
  • Input-support payload verification now checks IFORCE2.dll, force_eff.ifr, and writable control-profile storage for both games.
  • The branded desktop and Start-menu shortcut opens the unified selection launcher with no direct-game argument. Setup removes only recognized legacy project PowerShell shortcuts that bypassed the hub and displayed the old icon.
  • Launcher-owned ISO cleanup now retries and polls Windows until the image reports Attached=False; it no longer reports an eject merely because the first dismount command returned.

Verification status

  • Focused control-profile and Pirate's Moon executable-transformation tests pass.
  • Full installer build and base/Pirate's Moon RIP smoke verification pass with 65 payload files and zero forbidden files.
  • Base ISO, Pirate's Moon ISO-version ZIP, and Pirate's Moon RIP verification share one parameterized installed-game contract covering mount lifetime where applicable, extraction, executable hashes, compatibility output, every installed music track, CD-audio lifecycle/protocol, input files, writable mappings, renderer policy, and wrapper provenance. The base ISO additionally verifies populated disc video. All three available media paths pass; the exact ISO-version archive passes safe ZIP extraction, BIN/CUE conversion, mount/eject, InstallShield extraction, and true-disc executable normalization.
  • CD music no longer depends on the failing legacy mpegvideo MCI driver. The helper now uses pinned MIT-licensed NLayer 1.16.0 for managed MP3 decoding and Windows waveOut for output. On the current validation account, the real-output gate sees eight devices and passes decode, play, pause, resume, and stop both directly and through each installed game's helper protocol.
  • The launcher now has a bottom-right UNINSTALL action. It removes both game trees, compatibility files, settings, diagnostics, and shortcuts while preserving only base-game and Pirate's Moon pilots save trees. Save copies are SHA-256 verified, unsafe linked paths are rejected, the cleanup worker independently validates the installation markers and rejects filesystem roots, and failed cleanup retains a recoverable backup. Cleanup clears read-only attributes from ISO-derived files before removal and runs outside the install directory so Windows can remove that directory. Reinstall accepts the resulting save-only folder and stages those saves into the new installation before replacing it.
  • Defender custom scans of the final setup and verification trees produced no new or active detection with intelligence 1.459.193.0.
  • Setup SHA-256: 221D2DE3972A9116BBF74C07EF7360BB5731442BA6F938C6A0149031DDDBA897.

Known limitation

Physical HOTAS enumeration and remapping still require field confirmation on representative hardware. The replacement MP3 path passes on the current interactive validation account but still needs representative field-machine coverage.

One user reported a strong green cast across base-game mission one on a first affected launch; rebooting Windows cleared it and no recurrence has been reported. The capture retained non-green HUD colors, and no matching renderer logs or hardware/HDR details are available. This is tracked as an unresolved, non-reproduced field observation and is not evidence for changing the qualified renderer baseline by itself.

@Icehellionx Icehellionx released this 12 Sep 20:18

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.5

This update fixes a clean-install registry gap discovered through community reports. Players no longer need to run the original 1999 setup program before starting the remaster.

Changes

  • Setup writes InstallPath, Version, and the complete InstallOptions=0x00050707 value to the canonical 32-bit Windows machine registry key for MechWarrior 3 and, when selected, Pirate's Moon.
  • Registration happens automatically during the normal remaster installation. No manual registry import, legacy setup run, or restart is required.
  • A separate retail installation already registered at another path is preserved.
  • The launcher continues to refresh the tested per-user VirtualStore registration as a compatibility fallback.
  • Uninstall removes only registrations that still point to that remaster installation.
  • GitHub now provides a guided bug-report form requesting reproducible system and diagnostic information without asking users to upload game media or private data.

Verification

  • Setup, launcher, uninstaller, and registry-focused test programs compiled successfully.
  • The registry contract passed for the base game and Pirate's Moon, including canonical 32-bit paths, the VirtualStore fallback, versions, path normalization, complete install options, and preservation of a differently located retail installation.
  • Full installer smoke verification passed for the base game and Pirate's Moon RIP path: 62 payload files, no forbidden files, qualified r18 DDrawCompat payload unchanged, ZipperFixup passed, and CD-audio protocol/lifetime checks passed.
  • The setup, extracted payload, base-game smoke tree, and Pirate's Moon smoke tree produced no new Microsoft Defender detection with security intelligence 1.459.177.0 (12 detections before and after). The newest pre-scan event was a blocked reflection-heavy development command for a disposable registry integration test, not a packaged file.

Setup SHA-256: 5FE8FDE29257CB2276AF60B2CD610CAD6CDAC7DD4FBBDD6AD136D4E339413255.

Known limitation

The canonical HKLM write is covered by the compiled registry contract, but this build still needs confirmation from a genuinely clean Windows account or machine that has never run the retail installer.

The installer remains unsigned, so Windows may display an Unknown publisher or SmartScreen reputation warning. Verify the published checksum; do not disable Windows security protections.

@Icehellionx Icehellionx released this 11 Sep 17:31

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.4

This update adds adaptive recovery and restores the previously qualified graphics wrapper after field testing found that the experimental renderer could fail all four initialization attempts.

Changes

  • The release wrapper is derived directly from qualified DDrawCompat v0.7.1 and preserves the field baseline as one unit: isolated INTRO.AVI crop/matte cleanup, output-only top/left gameplay edge repair, and composable borderless Alt-Tab behavior. A separately switchable INTRO.AVI-only shader now smooths low-level dark chroma noise without applying a black clamp or altering gameplay surfaces. The broad experimental shader, telemetry, and texture hooks are not shipped.
  • Set RemasterIntroChromaCleanup = off in DDrawCompat.ini to disable only the new polish pass. Recovery attempts 2 through 5 also force it off, and the complete mouse-safe r3 installer remains archived as a full rollback marker.
  • The launcher's shipped profile retains desktop-resolution internal rendering and 4× MSAA. A no-MSAA field build failed on attempt 1 in the same way, disproving MSAA as the cause. The retained Pirate's Moon attempt-1 log identified the fatal race precisely: IDirectDrawSurface4::GetAttachedSurface returned DDERR_SURFACELOST while borderless presentation was changing fullscreen mode and rebuilding resources. The compatibility wrapper now restores and retries lost primary-surface GetAttachedSurface and AddAttachedSurface calls in-process on a bounded schedule, followed by the existing clipper and Direct3D guards; successful calls are unchanged. The intro is not skipped or replaced. Reduced-feature and native-scale profiles remain later safety fallbacks.
  • Recovery settings are written only to a temporary process-specific DDrawCompat configuration. A disk-backed recovery record restores any existing player configuration byte-for-byte after launch or after an interrupted launcher process, and removes the temporary file when no prior file existed.
  • Process checks are scoped to this installation. The launcher no longer blocks on or terminates similarly named game/audio processes from unrelated folders.
  • ISO media is attached only while it is needed. Setup ejects installer-owned media immediately after extraction; the launcher ejects launcher-owned media when the game exits or recovery fails. Media already mounted by the player is reused and deliberately left attached.
  • A cross-process launch lease prevents overlapping launcher/recovery loops from competing for the same game and ISO. Mount ownership is persisted so the next run can clean up after an interrupted launcher.
  • Installation-owned CD-audio helpers now receive their supported graceful shutdown command before any kill fallback. Cleanup runs on every launcher exit path and before uninstall. The helper also watches the process that launched it and exits itself when that game process ends, covering launcher crashes or termination. This prevents an orphaned helper from locking the installation directory; similarly named helpers outside this installation remain untouched.
  • Early nonzero process exits, including access violations, remain failed recovery attempts instead of being reported as successful launches.
  • Borderless keepvidmem(1) Alt-Tab preserves the visible game frame without minimizing, releases desktop cursor capture, stays in the normal window band so other applications and capture overlays remain visible, and restores fullscreen input on reactivation.
  • Window z-order is changed only after a real deactivation event; startup remains untouched so intro-video initialization is not disrupted.
  • Pirate's Moon now has its own lean DDrawCompat configuration with standard 50 ms PresentDelay and VSync enabled. Base-game-only intro crop/chroma and gameplay-edge settings are not injected into the expansion. The prior VSync-wait and startup-surface-clear experiments did not solve the underlying initialization race and are not packaged.
  • The inactive presentation layer accepts a click only to reactivate the real game window, consumes that click so it cannot reach the desktop or game, then returns to its disabled/click-through state. Active MW3 state owns cursor visibility at DDrawCompat's emulation boundary, forces a cursor-free repaint, clears the presentation GUI thread's cursor at the handoff, and prevents the final presentation renderer from compositing the remembered desktop arrow into the low-resolution game surface. Deactivation restores ordinary cursor presentation for the next foreground application. It does not manipulate the Windows cursor counter or run polling/capture loops.
  • New installations default to the current user's local Programs directory, where the legacy game and launcher can maintain runtime configuration without elevation. A system-wide Program Files location can prevent adaptive profiles and diagnostics from being written.
  • mech3.out and the DDrawCompat log are archived for every attempt under %LOCALAPPDATA%\MechWarrior 3 Remastered\attempts so earlier evidence is no longer overwritten by later retries.
  • The launcher log now records the launcher version and the recovery profile used by each attempt.
  • The launcher manifest declares current Windows compatibility, preventing modern Windows releases from being logged as Windows NT 6.2.

Verification

The updated launcher compiles successfully with the release build settings, and the manifest parses as valid XML. Focused recovery tests cover byte-preserving restore, no-original-file cleanup, restart recovery after interruption, owned-versus-unrelated process paths, and ISO mount-ownership classification.

The final r18 wrapper passed five standard launcher attempt-1 tests, including a fresh-path run; three tests encountered and recovered the formerly fatal surface-loss race. The exact installer-extracted Pirate's Moon tree then passed three direct launches with no launcher retry or fallback available. Captures from all three direct launches showed a clean black MicroProse splash and intact logo without the uniform gray failure frame.

The finished setup, its extracted 62-file payload, and the exact runnable Pirate's Moon tree passed Microsoft Defender custom scans. The system reported 11 detections before and 11 after the scans, so the package produced no new malware detection.

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.3

This update removes a startup race between Windows ISO mounting and the game launch.

Changes

  • The launcher now waits until Windows has assigned the mounted disc a drive letter and its root is readable before starting MechWarrior 3 or an ISO-installed Pirate's Moon.
  • Media readiness is checked for both newly mounted and already attached images, with a bounded 30-second timeout and a specific recovery message.
  • Successful mount readiness, including the selected drive and volume label, is recorded in %LOCALAPPDATA%\MechWarrior 3 Remastered\launcher.log to distinguish media failures from graphics initialization failures.
  • The launcher invokes its mount script through PowerShell's encoded-command interface so spaces, apostrophes, and other path characters cannot corrupt the command line.

The existing video-initialization recovery remains unchanged. A confirmed Video Error may still indicate a separate graphics compatibility issue; attach mech3.out, DDrawCompat-Mech3fixup.log, and launcher.log when reporting one.

Verification

The launcher was compiled and tested against a real MW3 ISO. Windows attached the image, exposed the MW3 volume, and the launcher confirmed its root was readable before returning. The already-mounted path was also verified.

The finished setup executable passed a Microsoft Defender custom scan with security-intelligence version 1.459.146.0 and no detection.

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.2

This reliability update makes video-startup recovery deterministic and replaces the CD-audio executable that Microsoft Defender identified heuristically.

Changes

  • The launcher restores the tested Direct3D HAL, primary adapter, and 1024x768 startup mode before launch and again after each detected video-device failure.
  • CPU-affinity rotation is disabled in the shipped graphics preset so legacy D3DIM initialization remains on one processor.
  • Automatic retries now allow four seconds for graphics-driver teardown and record attempt results in %LOCALAPPDATA%\MechWarrior 3 Remastered\launcher.log.
  • The upstream native cdaudioplr.exe helper is replaced with a small, auditable managed implementation of the same local cdaudio-winmm protocol.
  • The replacement helper does not enumerate processes or open process handles. Microsoft Defender scans of the development build completed with no detection.
  • The installer does not add antivirus exclusions. Re-recording the MP3 tracks is unnecessary because the reported detection targeted executable code, not music media.

Verification

Download SHA256SUMS.txt with the setup executable and compare it using the command in the README. PAYLOAD_MANIFEST.sha256 lists every file embedded inside setup.

The installer remains unsigned, so Windows may display an Unknown publisher or SmartScreen warning.

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.1

This polish update handles the blocking video-device error seen on the first launch of some fresh installations and raises the initial music volume.

Changes

  • The launcher now watches the game process for its Video Error dialog during startup.
  • If Failed to initialize video device blocks startup, the launcher dismisses that game-owned dialog, performs its normal cleanup, and retries automatically.
  • Existing log-based detection remains in place as a second path for the related early video-startup failure.
  • CD music now starts at 60% instead of 10%.
  • Remaster defaults are applied once per game, so later volume and graphics changes made by the player are no longer reset on every launch.

Verification

Download SHA256SUMS.txt with the setup executable and compare it using the command in the README. PAYLOAD_MANIFEST.sha256 lists every file embedded inside setup.

The installer is not Authenticode-signed. Windows may therefore display an Unknown publisher or SmartScreen warning.

MechWarrior 3 Remastered v1.2.0

This update adds a unified remaster launcher and smooths over the game's intermittent video-startup failure.

Changes

  • The desktop shortcut now opens a black-and-red remaster hub.
  • The hub provides one-click access to MechWarrior 3, Pirate's Moon, and both original PDF manuals.
  • Game tiles use the icon embedded in each installed game executable.
  • The launcher keeps the original red Mad Cat icon artwork and adds only a small steel R identifier.
  • If the game writes its known Error opening video... ABORTING RUN startup failure and exits immediately, the launcher cleans up and retries automatically up to four times.
  • Existing mw3 and pm launcher command-line arguments remain supported for compatibility.

Verification

Download SHA256SUMS.txt with the setup executable and compare it using the command in the README. PAYLOAD_MANIFEST.sha256 lists every file embedded inside setup.
