Shatranj 1.2 — Connected Rooks

Shatranj now brings the same network chess game to ZX Spectrum Classic,
Spectrum Next, Spectranext, Windows, macOS, and Linux. Any supported client can
play any other through Direct TCP or MQTT.

What is new

  • Native Spectranext cartridge edition with Direct TCP, MQTT, cartridge clock,
    persistent settings and saved games, and a guided resource installer.
  • Persistent, guided Spectrum connection and game setup with live board and
    piece previews.
  • Faster, smoother Spectrum input and rendering, plus a refreshed and more
    responsive Qt desktop interface.
  • More reliable Direct, MQTT, reconnection, saved-game restoration, takeback,
    rematch, and interrupted-write behavior across mixed-platform games.
  • Opponent-platform identification across Classic, Next, Spectranext, Windows,
    macOS, and Linux.

Downloads

  • ZX Spectrum Classic: Shatranj-1.2-ZX-Spectrum-Classic.zip
  • ZX Spectrum Next: Shatranj-1.2-ZX-Spectrum-Next.zip
  • Windows x86_64: Shatranj-1.2-Windows-x86_64.zip
  • Linux x86_64: Shatranj-1.2-Linux-x86_64.AppImage
  • macOS Apple Silicon: Shatranj-1.2-macOS-arm64.zip
  • macOS Intel: Shatranj-1.2-macOS-x86_64.zip
  • Spectranext: in the cartridge menu, load
    https://ignaciomonge.github.io/Shatranj/ as a resource URL.

The Classic ZIP contains SHATRANJ.tap, SHATRANJ.OVL, and SHATRANJ.DAT;
keep all three files together. The Next ZIP contains the self-contained
SHATRANJ.nex. A GitHub Release ZIP is not a mountable Spectranext resource;
use the URL above.

Classic and Next network play require a supported UART-to-ESP connection
running ESP-AT 1.7.6. Classic also requires divMMC/esxDOS. Spectranext requires
the latest stable cartridge firmware.
