• Google has started using passthrough links for non-logged in users, which hides the actual destination URLs behind tokens, and breaks Indie Wiki Buddy's filtering function. This has been fixed by extracting the real URL from elsewhere in the page's data (such as the breadcrumbs).

• Wiki redirect data is now pulled from an API. Indie Wiki Buddy's wiki data now lives in its own data repository on GitHub, served from an API endpoint.
  • The extension fetches and caches the latest data every three hours, which means you'll get new wiki redirects soon after they're added instead of having to wait for an update to be made and approved through the extension stores (which can take a week or more)
  • The extension package itself will still continue to be periodically updated with new wiki additions
  • You can turn this off in settings, in which case you will only see the wikis bundled with your installed version
• Search engines are now opt-in! In an effort to be more privacy-friendly, Indie Wiki Buddy no longer asks for access to all its supported search engines upon install. google.com still works out of the box, as it is the most popular search engine that most users will want and expect to be enabled. Every other search engine (Bing, DuckDuckGo, Brave, Ecosia, Kagi, Qwant, Startpage, Yahoo, Yandex, and international Google domains) is off until you turn it on in settings.
  • This keeps the extension's access to the minimum you actually use, and lets us add new search engines later without an update that everyone has to approve
  • Existing users who update to 4.0.0 will see a one-time page explaining the change and toggles for all search engines.
  • Search engine toggles are now saved per device rather than synced, since browser permissions are granted per device
• Custom search engines are back! You can now point Indie Wiki Buddy at your own search engines running SearXNG or Whoogle, including ones hosted on localhost or over plain http.
  • Like search engine toggles, these are saved per device
• New welcome page on first install, walking you through the settings most people want to set up.
• BreezeWiki changes:
  • Similar to our search engines update, BreezeWiki mirrors are now opt-in on selection
  • Available BreezeWiki mirrors are now pulled from our endpoint, so new mirrors work without an extension update
  • Everyone's host is reset to breezewiki.com with this update
• Search result filtering improvements:
  • Re-ordering indie wiki results to the top is now more reliable
  • Wikis with non-Latin names are now handled correctly
• The settings popup now warns you if Indie Wiki Buddy has lost browser access to Fandom, Fextralife, or Neoseeker, with a button to grant it back

  • Per-wiki settings are now split across 32 storage keys, to avoid hitting the browser storage limit for synced storage data. The extension will automatically migrate your settings to the new format.
  • Banners on wiki pages now appear sooner in the page load
  • Updated the codebase to use ES modules, so files can share code
  • Dark mode fixes, keyboard focus fixes, missing localization, and other small improvements
