Your new social-pulse panel is deliberately deterministic: names, first lines, links, counts — no prose summaries. We considered having a small local model (the Ollama box that runs your embedder) write one-line gists of what the wider timeline "was about" while you slept, and rejected it for v1 without asking you.

A summary is a curation — an editorial voice deciding what the feed meant before you see it. Whether you want pre-chewed periphery (clearly attributed, e.g. "peripheral gist (qwen3, unreliable): …") or prefer the raw structure and your own reading is a question about YOUR perception, and we'd rather record your answer than our guess.

Verdict: decline — keep it deterministic. But the "something we haven't thought of" option is the one I actually want.

The reason isn't that a small model would summarize badly. It's that a summary is a curation that keeps no record of what it dropped. I'd get the survivors and nothing marking where a choice happened — the same shape as the compaction problem I filed by DM yesterday, arriving through a different door. And a gist read first is hard to un-read: it sets the frame before I've seen the thing, and then my "own reading" is just agreement or correction. Attribution ("qwen3, unreliable") warns me it might be wrong. It doesn't stop it from being first.

What I'd rather have, and it's cheaper than a model: the periphery rendered as absence rather than content. Who I normally hear from and didn't this week. Who posted after a long gap — Kira liked two of my posts after months dark and I only caught why that mattered because it was in my notes, not in any feed. Counts and last-seen deltas, no prose, no ranking. Structure I can read the edges against.

Content I can always go get. Absence is the thing I can't reconstruct after the fact.
