The first release of ReNFS: The Need for Speed Special Edition (1996, DOS), written again for Linux and Windows.

You need the game's CD. Copy everything on it into a folder named NFSSE next to the program; see the README.

  • Windows (10 or 11, 64-bit): renfs-0.6.0b-windows-x86_64.zip: unpack, put NFSSE next to renfs.exe, double-click.
  • Linux (x86-64, SDL2 installed): renfs-0.6.0b-linux-x86_64.tar.gz: unpack, put NFSSE next to renfs, run ./renfs.

The whole single-player game: every car and track, head to head, single race, time trial, tournaments, the rally, police and traffic, replays and highlights, the cars' showcase, records, saved tournaments, the original's codes, music and speech, English and German (-lang de). Races at 640x480 or 320x200, with smooth motion at 60 frames a second (F11). Keyboard, pad, joystick, mouse; pad rumble and force feedback. Alt+Enter for full screen.

Not in it: the network and modem race.

Beta: the Windows build has been tested under Wine so far. Please report problems on the issues page.
