Changelog

This page summarizes each release. For full details (every fix's root cause and the regression test that now guards it), see the repository's CHANGELOG.md.

Versions follow Semantic Versioning.

0.7.0

Repo cleanup, live debug logging, and another GUI-freeze bug caught while adding it.

  • Console log streaming alongside the existing log file (BYTERESCUE_DEBUG for verbose output); every run logs its environment at startup
  • Fixed: selecting "Physical Drive" as the Recovery Center's source froze the whole window for ~6 seconds (synchronous WMI calls on the GUI thread, plus a redundant third call on every dropdown change) — now backgrounded and cached
  • Removed stray committed .pyc files

0.6.1

A targeted bug hunt across every button and control in the app.

  • Fixed: "START RECOVERY SCAN" went permanently dead after the first scan in a given Recovery Center window — a broken re-entry guard, replaced with a dedicated _scan_running flag
  • Fixed a splash-screen teardown bug and a deeper Tkinter test-isolation issue it surfaced

0.6.0

Real logging, and a serious bug it caught.

  • Added logs/byterescue.log (rotated at 2MB) and an "Open Log" button in the Recovery Center
  • Fixed: the Recovery Results table could permanently stop updating partway through a scan while the summary line kept reporting the true (larger) count — a single bad result item aborted the whole sync batch; now per-item error handling means one bad row is skipped, not everything after it

0.5.0

  • Added an animated startup splash screen reflecting real startup work
  • Fixed: detecting storage devices (startup and "Refresh Drives") used to block the entire GUI; now backgrounded

0.4.0

  • Launcher rewrite: ByteRescue.bat now hands off to ByteRescue.ps1, which self-elevates, ensures Python 3.11+ (installing via winget if missing), and launches the app — see Installation
  • Fixed three real bugs in the old all-batch launcher, including one that failed on every run

0.3.0

  • Recover by File System now actually works for FAT12/16/32, including deleted entries and original filenames — see Supported File Systems
  • Fixed a real physical-drive-scanning bug: pathlib.Path() silently mangled device paths like \\.\PhysicalDrive2, breaking raw-drive scans even when running elevated
  • Added the Recovery Center's in-window Help/Docs tab

0.2.0

A Recovery Center rebuild: four real recovery modes instead of one signature-only scanner, a real ZIP implementation, structural validation (not just signature matching), chunked overlap-buffered scanning, pause/resume/stop, and many new validated formats. See Recovery Center and Recovery Signatures for what shipped here and has stayed since.

0.1.2

Desktop-interface polish: a "What am I looking at?" explainer tab, fixed white-hover UI glitches, improved crash handling (readable error dialogs instead of silent failures), and Hex Viewer improvements (scrollbars, dark theme, larger view, 128 KB preview).
