Release list
Photo·AIrt v0.4.0
Highlights
The style gallery is now curated around what algorithms do best. The AI Studio handles loose painterly reinterpretation; the built-in styles stay instant, adjustable, repeatable and faithful to your photo, including exact print and pixel structure. There are now 10 built-in styles instead of 15.
- More vibrant Watercolour: a new Vibrance setting and a lower default transparency, so washes look vivid instead of matte.
- Rewritten Graphite Sketch, after Lu, Xu & Jia, "Combining Sketch and Tone for Pencil Drawing Production" (NPAR 2012): direction-aware pencil strokes, pencil-like tones and diagonal hatching.
- New Ink & Toon: it replaces Ink & Wash and Cel Animation. Its Colour slider goes from a sepia ink wash to cel shading with bold outlines.
- Kept: Oil on Canvas, Impressionist Strokes, Watercolour, Scratchboard, Stained Glass, Low Poly, CMYK Halftone and Pixel Art.
- Retired: Starry Flow, Pop Art Quad, Pointillism and Risograph. The AI Studio now does these looks better.
- README screenshots are retaken on Linux, Windows and macOS.
Upgrade note: AI recipes and settings that refer to the retired or merged styles (flow, popart, pointillism, riso, ink, toon) no longer apply.

Photo·AIrt v0.3.0
Highlights
- New style: Scratchboard. A night-ink engraving look: light scratched out of a navy-black ground, with a glowing sun, sun rays, stars in open sky and warm cream highlights. It's the fifteenth built-in style, in the Drawing & Ink group, and is laid out like an external plug-in.
- Better algorithms:
- Cel Animation and Ink & Wash: outlines no longer turn skin, foliage and clouds into speckle, and Ink & Wash has a deeper, contrast-stretched wash.
- Stained Glass: panes now follow the edges of the scene (SLIC superpixels), and rendering is faster.
- Oil on Canvas: the impasto reads as coherent brushwork.
- Pointillism: dabs keep the photo's lightness, so they blend in the eye instead of reading as noise.
- Pop Art Quad: posterises into clean shapes.
- CMYK Halftone: cleaner, less muddy colour.
- Retuned defaults for Ink & Wash, Oil on Canvas, Starry Flow, Stained Glass, Pointillism, Impressionist Strokes, Watercolour, Pixel Art, Risograph and Low Poly. Setting keys and style ids are unchanged, so saved AI recipes keep working; output with default settings looks different, as intended.
- New README screenshots, taken on Linux, Windows and macOS with public-domain (CC0) photos. Credits are in
docs/screenshots/CREDITS.md.

Photo·AIrt v0.2.2
Photo·AIrt v0.2.2 gives the app a clean welcome screen.
- A clean welcome screen. Until you open a photo, the style gallery and the Atelier stay hidden, so the start screen shows just the welcome, your recent photos and the collection strip, instead of style settings with nothing to apply them to. Both panels appear as soon as a photo loads.

These are portable executable archives, not installers. macOS binaries are not signed or notarized. Linux needs its desktop graphics libraries and XDG desktop portal. HEIC decoding uses ImageMagick, libvips, or heif-convert when installed. The Windows executable links to VCRUNTIME140.dll; install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable (x64) if it is not already present.
Each archive includes the application and font licenses. SHA256SUMS.txt provides checksums for all four downloads.
What's Changed
- BL-001: plug-in system design record (D1–D10), done in v0.2.0 by @JCallico in #3
- A clean welcome screen: side panels only with a photo; v0.2.2 by @JCallico in #8

Photo·AIrt v0.2.1
Photo·AIrt v0.2.1 polishes the Windows experience found while testing v0.2.0.
- Plain Windows paths. Plug-in folders and opened photos now show as
C:\…instead of\\?\C:\…. Plug-ins you approved with v0.2.0 stay approved. - A top bar that fits. In narrower windows the photo's name is shortened and less important details are dropped instead of overlapping the view buttons, and the Claude and Codex badges become compact (hover them for details).
- Fresh panels each session. The Atelier panel no longer reopens scrolled to where it was last time, and each style keeps its own scroll position. Window size and position are still remembered.

Photo·AIrt v0.2.0
Photo·AIrt v0.2.0 adds a plug-in system for painting styles.
- Plug-in styles in any language. A plug-in is a folder with a
plugin.tomlthat describes it (name, gallery group, description and settings) and a program that renders. Photo·AIrt turns its settings into sliders, toggles and drop-downs, with live previews, finishing, export and Art Director recipes, like the built-in styles. - Safe by default. Plug-ins are found in
PHOTO_AIRT_PLUGINS, your plug-ins folder, or apluginsfolder next to the app. Discovery only readsplugin.toml. Nothing runs until you approve the plug-in in the new Plug-ins panel, and any change to its files needs approving again. - Built-in styles are plug-ins too. The fourteen styles still ship inside the single executable, with identical output, but each now lives in its own plug-in folder in the repository and can also run as an external plug-in.
- Two example plug-ins: Retro Print (Python) and Copperplate Engraving (Node.js), a new banknote-style line engraving.
- Tools for authors:
photo-airt --plugins,--check-plugin <folder>and the plug-in authoring guide. - Relative photo paths now work from the command line and in shared inputs.
