Contextual tips

Tips can be authored per language for loading and in-world/pause contexts. Each entry has text, display time, and a stage, with optional conditions for:

  • Dimension, biome, or structure.
  • Advancement progress.
  • Carried items or equipped Curios, with optional NBT matching.

The editor includes condition selectors and timing controls. While connected, clients request the server's tips for their selected language; local files provide fallback behavior. Editing server-managed tip content requires permission level 2.

The tip editor's Back button is at the lower left because search and editing controls already occupy its header. New is beside Back, and Save stays in the footer. Timing and registry selectors place Cancel at the upper left, with their titles bounded beside it.

Version-specific item data: references to NBT on this page describe Forge 1.20.1. NeoForge 1.21.1 uses native data components. See Versions and item data; old item NBT is not converted.

NeoForge condition example:

{"id":"minecraft:diamond_sword","components":"[damage=3]","componentMode":"WEAK"}

NONE ignores item data, WEAK requires configured values/removals while allowing extras, and STRONG compares the complete effective changes. Dynamic components such as enchantments are resolved after world registries become available.

Tips appear in the lower-left corner on loading/world transition screens and the Esc pause menu. If every game-stage entry has a condition and none match, the panel stays hidden. Add a general game-stage entry without conditions for a fallback:

{"stage":"game","text":"A general pause-menu tip.","time":5000}

From 26.10.4, newly generated default files include six general any-stage tips, each with a six-second display time. The renderer selects another eligible tip when the current time expires; random selection can repeat an entry. Existing custom files are preserved; if yours only contain conditional game tips, add an unconditional entry and reload resources or reconnect. Loading-only entries remain hidden in the pause menu.

In a small window, the condition list scrolls above Save and Back. Use its wheel or scrollbar to reach lower conditions; right-click deletion and item hover follow the visible row positions. Registry selectors place Search below their title and Cancel button.
