Item Selected: Small Nerf Gun

Use Scenario: Casual NERF battle in a household/outdoor setting. (Single-use tool, scenario does not change depending on lens)

Awareness gaps:

• Lack of indicator for when dart is properly inserted. Failing to properly load the dart results in a misfire/stray shot.
• Perhaps this goes beyond the scope of the item's pricing, but these toys always come with the risk of being aimed at faces/eyes. Perhaps it could have some way of ensuring that it isn't fired at oneself or sensitive body parts of another person (eyes, face, etc.).

Adaptation gaps:

• Grip is way too small for most hands. Improper grip makes the gun difficult to prime, fire, and handle. If it has a larger/more adaptable grip it could appeal to more users. If left alone it could narrow the appeal significantly and possibly result in misfires/accidental injury
• Very tight priming handle. Could be difficult to prime for younger/smaller people. Gun is assumedly aiming towards a younger demographic, meaning this could limit usability quite a bit. If the idea is to get this toy into young hands and encourage repeat purchases, this needs to be addressed.

Feedback Gaps:

• Priming indicator may not be totally clear to users unfamiliar with NERF guns and could lead to improper use. I can see some children failing to understand when the gun is and isn't primed, leading to misfired and maybe accidental injury.

Proposed Redesign:

Design Rationale:

• The main thing I am aiming to accomplish with this redesign is improving the gun's overall ease of use, with safety (as noted in my gap analysis) being the main focus. I think the original design lacks clarity and a few conveniences that could be heavily improved upon.

Proposed Features:

• Vacuum-sealed dart chamber to prevent firing unless dart is properly/fully inserted
• Hammer-action, smooth priming handle that can be operated with one hand
• Priming indicator that raises when gun is primed - stands out in color against gun design
• Strengthened dart holders to prevent them from falling out (also improves pocketability)
• Slightly widened/lengthened handle to improve grip
• Softened dart tips to reduce injury on impact with sensitive areas

ML Features:

• Front-facing camera that can identify when the gun is being aimed at faces and lock the trigger

Social Considerations:

• Adding a camera to a children's toy introduces security and privacy concerns
• Retains orange tip and colorful design to reduce confusion with real firearms - will still have limited appeal to some families/parents

Tradeoff Analysis:

• Original item was designed to be cheap and replaceable. New mechanisms introduce significant costs (especially on the ML side) and failure points such as sensitive vacuum chambers and lever-action joints in the handle. Would be significantly harder to repair, replace, and buy on impulse.
