OpenXR-EyeCapture is now VR EyeCapture. The old GitHub address still leads here. This page is the only place to download it.
Download
VR-EyeCapture-Setup-v0.5.0.exe— the installer. Run it and accept the one Windows administrator (UAC) prompt. It registers the recorder for OpenXR games. Uninstall from Windows Settings > Apps: that cleans up everything, including SteamVR games you enabled.VR-EyeCapture-OBS-v0.5.0.zip— only for OBS users (the live view source). You do not need it otherwise.
Updating from v0.4 or older (zip folder): exit the old tray app, run the installer. Your settings in %APPDATA%\OpenXR-EyeCapture\config.ini are copied to the new place once. Then delete the old folder. There is no zip of the main tool any more.
New
- SteamVR (OpenVR) games — tray menu or app window → SteamVR games... lists the games in your Steam library. Tick a game to record it, untick to undo. Direct3D 11 games. Tested on a real headset with Crisis VRigade 2; other games are covered by the test suite, reports welcome. The in-headset recording dot works there too (a SteamVR overlay, not in the video). See README, SteamVR games.
- SteamVR quick mode — records SteamVR's finished picture for any SteamVR game, with no change to game folders. No dot in the headset in this mode.
- Installer (Inno Setup) instead of the zip. User data stays out of Program Files (
%APPDATA%,%LOCALAPPDATA%, your Videos folder). Optional Start with Windows task. - New look — Windows 11 glass style windows (Mica, light / dark / accent colour), a Theme choice (Same as Windows, Light, Dark), new logo and icons, a short themed tray menu.
- App window — no title bar, card headers, Save keeps the window open, Minimize / Exit, help texts rewritten in plain words, SteamVR mode under Advanced, "Violet for OBS" switch in the Recording Indicator group.
- Headset cues — the start / stop / error tones now play as sounds from the game process (no more
Beep()). - No Man's Sky support in the SteamVR proxy (OpenVR 2.15,
IVRCompositor_029). Not yet tested in the game itself.
License — your recordings are yours
- The tool is free for noncommercial use (PolyForm Noncommercial License 1.0.0), Copyright (c) 2026 JRDevo.
- New: an extra permission says the videos you make are yours. You may publish them and earn money from them: YouTube ads, sponsors, live streams, memberships, donations, paid content.
- Not allowed without written permission: selling the tool, putting it in a paid product or bundle, or offering it as a paid service.
- The app window shows these rules (hover the license link in the footer). Full text: LICENSE.md. The OBS plugin stays GPL-2.0-or-later (obs/COPYING.md).
Fixes
- The tray no longer writes startup registry values silently, and every binary has version information (an antivirus flagged the old behaviour).
- Uninstall no longer fails on the Videos folder; the window comes to the front after the UAC prompt.
- SteamVR games window: readable message boxes, no extra popup after a success, no question for games without anti-cheat.
- Live share: freeing its video memory at the end of a session no longer stalls the game.
- More swapchain formats and codecs are tested (RGBA, BGRX, 10-bit, FP16; H.264 / HEVC / AV1).
Notes
- Needs ffmpeg for the YouTube conversion:
winget install Gyan.FFmpeg.Essentials. - SteamVR games: close the game and SteamVR before you tick or untick it.
- Logo files for videos and thumbnails: docs/images.
- Every change is checked by automatic tests on GitHub and on a real GPU before the release.
