PaperRoute Tracker v0.8.0 — Route Analytics & Reports

PaperRoute v0.8.0 shows what your publication routes have taken: each route drawn to scale, your own history with each journal, and reports to share with a supervisor or coauthor. Everything is calculated on your computer from your own records. It follows the v0.8.0-rc.1 Preview.

Included

  • Route maps. A manuscript's Route opens on its whole route drawn to scale, from first submission to publication (or to today). Each stretch is colored by who held it: the journal, you (revising or rerouting), or production. Journals are named above their stretches, and every event is numbered and explained underneath, such as "Desk rejected, Jan 12: 7 days after submission" or "Resubmitted, Jun 10: after 69 days of revising". Time the record does not assign is hatched as not recorded, never estimated.
  • Insights (Ctrl+5), a new page:
    • Across the top: your manuscripts and submissions, the median time to a first decision, and the median time from first submission to acceptance, each with the number of records behind it.
    • Your Journals: submissions, outcomes, and turnaround with each journal you have used.
    • Your Routes: journals, revision rounds, and days to acceptance and publication for each submitted manuscript.
    • Route Map: every published route lined up at day 0, with the median time to publication and how much of it was spent with journals, revising, and in production. Work not yet published can be included, drawn to today.
  • Your history with a journal appears in one line when you select it on the Journals page.
  • Reports to share. Pipeline Report... summarizes the manuscripts you choose; Route Report... (a manuscript's ⋯ menu) shows one route in full. Both are previewed, then saved as a single web page to print or save as PDF. They never include notes, correspondence, reviewer comments, file paths, or contact details.
  • Work types and tags. Give each manuscript a type (journal article, preprint, conference paper or abstract, poster, book chapter, thesis, other) and your own colored tags on its Overview. Tags show on board cards and in the Library, and both are searchable. Imports set the type only when the source states it. CV export can group by type.
  • One window per library. Opening PaperRoute again brings the open window forward instead of starting a second copy that could overwrite the first one's saves.
  • Shortcuts. Ctrl+5 opens Insights; Import & Export moves to Ctrl+6.
  • Fixed since rc.1. The update prompt and its progress window scale with the display, so Download & Restart shows its full label at 125% and 150%. The prompt comes from the installed version, so this applies to updates offered from v0.8 onward.

Before upgrading

v0.8 upgrades the library to Schema 8, which adds work types, tags, and tag colors. The upgrade validates your library and changes only the schema marker; manuscript data, managed files, and automatic backups stay byte-for-byte, and every manuscript starts with no type and no tags. v0.7 cannot open a library after v0.8 has used it, so make a portable backup with v0.7 first (Settings → Backup Library...) and keep it. The upgrade notes explain the details.

Verification

Every automated test passes, with none skipped. The published assets, the live updater from v0.7.0, the Schema 8 upgrade on a synthetic library, a clean install, and the new screens at 100%, 125%, and 150% in Light and Dark are recorded in #85.

PaperRoute Tracker v0.7.0 — Deadline Center

Released September 28, 2026. PaperRoute v0.7.0 is the current Stable release. It replaces the Reminders page with Deadlines, one list of everything that needs action and when, and adds a publication check that runs only when you ask. PaperRoute remains a local-first, privacy-focused app for tracking academic manuscripts from draft through submission, revision, and publication.

What's new

  • Deadlines. Revision deadlines, journal follow-ups, your reminders, unfinished submission preparation, and possible publications, grouped as Overdue, Today, Next 7 days, Later, No date, and Done. Counts across the top, chips for each kind, and a filter box. A revision shows how many reviewer comments are addressed, and work without a date stays visible instead of disappearing.
  • Act where you are. Open lands on the submission (at its reviewer responses for a revision), Postpone... offers tomorrow, a week, two weeks, or any date, Done completes a reminder, and Clear Follow-up... removes only the follow-up date. Every change is made on the record that owns the date, so Deadlines and the manuscript page always agree.
  • Always in view. The rail's Deadlines badge counts what is overdue or due today, and View in Deadlines → sits beside Needs Attention on the Board. Ctrl+4 opens Deadlines.
  • Check for Publications... asks Crossref, and optionally an ORCID record, whether manuscripts you are tracking have been published: by DOI, by a preprint's link to its published version, or by title. Each possible match offers Review Match, Mark Published..., and Ignore. Nothing is checked in the background, and nothing changes until you choose.
  • Mark Published... lists exactly what it will change before recording a normal lifecycle event. Fill Blanks from Crossref... fills empty publication fields after a preview and never replaces a value.
  • Fixes. Revision deadlines name their journal. The first-deadline date in Add Manuscript shows in full at 150% scaling. The update prompt opens on its Download & Restart button instead of with its notes selected. About PaperRoute scales with the display instead of clipping at 150%.

Upgrading

v0.7 upgrades the library to Schema 7, which remembers the possible publications you have reviewed. The upgrade validates your library and changes only the schema marker; manuscript data, managed files, and automatic backups stay byte-for-byte. v0.6 cannot open a library after v0.7 has used it, so make a portable backup with v0.6 first (Settings → Backup Library...) and keep it. The upgrade notes explain the details.

Verification

Release certification is recorded in #79. Every automated test passed with none skipped. Published assets were verified after a fresh download. An installed v0.6.0 was upgraded to v0.7.0-rc.1 through the live Preview updater: the library moved to Schema 7, the previous marker was kept byte-for-byte, and every data and managed file stayed byte-identical. Clean installation was checked on the Stable candidate. The live Stable updater check from v0.6.0 follows publication.

This Preview candidate replaces the Reminders page with Deadlines, one list of everything that needs action and when, and adds a publication check that runs only when you ask. v0.6.0 remains the current Stable release while installed, updater, and native display certification is completed.

Included

  • Deadlines. Revision deadlines, journal follow-ups, your reminders, unfinished submission preparation, and possible publications, grouped as Overdue, Today, Next 7 days, Later, No date, and Done. PaperRoute Tracker v0.6.0

PaperRoute Tracker v0.6.0 — Workspace

Released September 27, 2026. PaperRoute v0.6.0 is the current Stable release. It brings PaperRoute into one window with pages, gives each manuscript a single page with one save step, and applies a calmer card-based design throughout. Nothing about your library changes: v0.6 uses the same Schema 6 library as v0.5.

What's new

  • One window. A left rail opens the Board, Library, Journals, Reminders, and Import & Export pages, with Settings and Help below. Ctrl+1 to Ctrl+5 open the pages, Alt+Left and Alt+Right go back and forward, and F1 opens the User Guide. The rail can collapse to icons for more room.
  • A page for each manuscript. Overview, Authors, Versions, Submissions, and Readiness & Packets are tabs on one page, with one Save (Ctrl+S) and Discard bar. Leaving, switching manuscripts, or closing PaperRoute with unsaved changes asks first.
  • Submissions in place. Each journal submission is listed beside the selected one, and its editorial history, reviewer responses, and correspondence are edited on the same page.
  • A clearer board. Shelves are tabs with counts. Cards fill the window's width, open on a click, and show the stage, what needs attention, and the route so far. Needs Attention items filter the board.
  • Faster start. Add Manuscript can read a Word or LaTeX title page and set a first deadline. An empty library opens on a welcome that explains each way in, and empty lists say what belongs there.
  • Library and Import & Export pages. A sortable, filterable table of every manuscript, reusable authors and affiliations, and every way of bringing work in or taking it out on one page.
  • Fixes. Names containing "&" keep it in every dialog, and so does the update prompt's Download & Restart. The response export preview no longer opens with the draft selected, and its Markdown reads as plain text. Muted text meets 4.5:1 contrast in Light and Dark.

Upgrading

There is no data migration: v0.5 and v0.6 open the same library, and backups made by either version restore in both. Commands from the old Data menu now live on pages and under Settings; the User Guide's "Finding your way around" table lists each new location. The raw text of an exported Markdown response draft differs from v0.5 because it escapes less; the rendered result is the same.

Verification

Release certification is recorded in #74. Every automated test passed with none skipped. Published assets were verified after a fresh download. An installed v0.5.0 was upgraded through the live Preview updater, and every library file stayed byte-identical. Clean installation and 150% scaling were checked on the Stable candidate. The live Stable updater check from v0.5.0 follows publication.

Before trying this candidate

There is no data migration. v0.6 uses the same Schema 6 library as v0.5, so v0.5 can still open your library after you try this candidate, and backups made by either version restore in both. As always, make a portable backup first with Settings → Backup Library....

Commands from the old Data menu now live on pages and under Settings. The User Guide's "Finding your way around" table lists every new location. The raw text of an exported Markdown response draft differs from v0.5 because it escapes less; the rendered result is the same.

PaperRoute Tracker v0.5.0

@github-actions github-actions released this 26 Sep 22:09

PaperRoute Tracker v0.5.0 — Reviewer Response Workflow

Released September 26, 2026. PaperRoute v0.5.0 is the current Stable release. Release certification covered native Windows scaling, theme, and keyboard behavior, clean installation, installed v0.4-to-v0.5 migration, portable backup/restore, the real Preview updater path through v0.5.0-rc.2, and published installer/update/portable asset verification.

PaperRoute v0.5 turns reviewer and editor feedback into a structured revision workflow within the journal submission that received it. Track each request, draft a response, and export an editable response-to-reviewers document without an AI service or online account.

What's new

  • Reviewer Response Matrix — open Reviewer Responses... in Submission Details to add, edit, remove, filter, and reorder comments and actions.
  • Explicit decision and round links — every item belongs to an existing editorial decision in that submission and an explicitly entered positive revision-round number. Multiple reviewers and rounds retain their own labels and associations.
  • Response drafting — record reviewer/editor labels, comments, actions, manuscript locations, working notes, and draft responses. Track Unresolved, In progress, Addressed, and Not applicable states.
  • Editable Markdown export — review and edit a complete response draft before saving it to a file. The export includes item status, working notes, and decision/round context in stored order.
  • Schema 6 persistence — reviewer responses are preserved through manuscript editing, saving, recovery, and portable backup/restore. Referenced editorial decisions cannot be deleted until their response items are reassigned or removed.

Fixes

  • The manuscript shelves clear stale horizontal scroll space after wide-to-narrow resizing, maximize/restore, and card replacement. Vertical scrolling and manuscript-card actions remain available. This completes #37, merged in PR #51.
  • Literal ampersands display correctly in Save & Close, DOI & Crossref Metadata..., the Data menu, the Version History summary, and related help text instead of disappearing (#67, PR #68).

Saving and exporting

Choose Save Comment in the item editor, Save & Close in the matrix, Close in Submission Details, and Save & Close in Manuscript Details to persist the complete workflow. Canceling Manuscript Details discards all its unsaved changes, including accepted matrix edits.

Exporting creates a separate draft; it does not save the matrix, mark items addressed, or record a submission. The export contains the complete matrix regardless of its status filter and includes working notes. Review the preview before sharing it. Preview edits do not change matrix data, and subsequent matrix changes do not update an existing exported file.

Response statuses describe revision work without changing manuscript lifecycle state. A normal revision remains part of the existing journal submission.

Known limitations

  • The Markdown export escapes punctuation conservatively, so the raw file shows backslashes such as p\. 6 that disappear when the Markdown is rendered.
  • When a submission has more than one editorial decision, Add Comment asks you to choose the decision instead of preselecting one.

Compatibility and backup

  • Storage Schema 6 preserves existing manuscript, version, submission, readiness, and packet histories while adding reviewer responses. Migration from Schema 5 validates the library and retains the original data and previous schema marker without inventing feedback or rounds.
  • Create and retain a separate v0.4 portable ZIP backup before upgrading.
  • Restore backups made by v0.5 with v0.5 or later. Older restore code may ignore reviewer-response fields, even though older applications refuse to open a Schema 6 library directly. Return to v0.4 only with the pre-upgrade v0.4 backup.
  • The Excel workbook remains a partial interchange format. Use ZIP backup/restore for the complete workflow, and retain externally linked original files separately.

See the user guide for the workflow and upgrade notes for compatibility details.

The scope is tracked in #27 and the v0.5 milestone. Deadline Center, analytics, and optional AI assistance remain later roadmap work.

PaperRoute remains local-first and licensed under GPL-3.0-only.

PaperRoute Tracker v0.5.0-rc.2 — Reviewer Response Workflow

This Preview candidate replaces v0.5.0-rc.1 for final certification. It contains everything in rc.1 plus one interface fix and updated documentation. v0.4.0 remains the current Stable release while installed, updater, and native display certification is completed.

Changes since rc.1

  • Literal ampersands now display correctly. Manuscript Details showed Save Close and DOI Crossref Metadata...; the same fix covers the Journal, Preprint & Project Links dialog, the Data menu (Authors & Affiliations..., Publication & CV Export...), the Version History summary, the version editor's managed-copy help, and the Settings notification help (#67, PR #68).
  • The User Guide's "What Comes After v0.5?" section reflects the updated roadmap: v0.6 Workspace UI, v0.7 Deadline Center, and v0.8 Route Analytics & Reports (PR #66).

Included

  • Track reviewer/editor comments, actions, statuses, draft responses, manuscript locations, and working notes within an existing journal submission.
  • Associate each item with a recorded editorial decision and an explicit revision round. Filter by status and reorder the complete item sequence.
  • Preview and edit a Markdown response-to-reviewers draft before saving it. Export includes all matrix items and working notes, and does not modify the manuscript or record a resubmission.
  • Preserve nested save/cancel boundaries and validate response references during save, recovery, migration, and portable restore.
  • Keep manuscript shelf cards and their actions reachable after narrow/wide resizing and maximize/restore, with vertical scrolling retained.

Before trying this candidate

The candidate uses Schema 6. Make a full portable backup with v0.4 before upgrading, and keep that pre-upgrade backup if you may return to v0.4. Restore v0.5 backups only with v0.5 or later; an older application's restore path can ignore reviewer-response fields. Excel remains a partial interchange format.

Use a disposable Windows test environment for candidate certification. The response workflow is entirely manual and requires no AI service or account. Save the matrix back to the manuscript working copy, then save Manuscript Details to persist it.

Verification status

The candidate source passed 541 automated tests with no failures or skips. Packaging and final installed checks are recorded in the v0.5 release-certification issue (#52); this Preview does not claim Stable release certification.

PaperRoute Tracker v0.4.0

PaperRoute Tracker v0.4.0 — Submission Readiness

Released September 13, 2026. PaperRoute v0.4.0 is the current Stable release. Release certification covered native Windows scaling and keyboard behavior, clean installation, installed v0.3-to-v0.4 migration, the real Preview updater path through v0.4.0-rc.1, and release-candidate installer/update/portable asset verification.

PaperRoute v0.4 connects journal preparation to the exact manuscript version, packet files, and journal submission they belong to. Preparing a packet or completing a checklist does not claim that a submission occurred.

What's new

  • Reusable journal checklists — maintain requirements in the Journal Library and apply them to manuscript-specific readiness profiles. Track unresolved, complete, and not-applicable items while preserving each profile's copied requirements and progress.
  • Submission Packet Vault — assemble blinded manuscripts, cover letters, figures, supplements, and other file records around one exact Version History entry. Link a packet to a readiness profile, actual submission, and revision round when applicable.
  • Three file choices — keep external links, retain PaperRoute-managed snapshots, or record metadata without a local file.
  • Local file-integrity checks — explicitly record SHA-256 fingerprints and use Check Files to identify unchanged, changed, missing, unavailable, or unchecked files. Checks read files without rewriting their contents; replacing a saved fingerprint requires confirmation.
  • Connected workflow navigation — move between Manuscript Details, readiness, Version History, packets, and actual submissions while retaining unsaved work. Record Submission is an explicit action; revisions can remain associated with the existing journal submission.
  • Responsive workflow dialogs — long notes and expanded windows keep packet and readiness controls reachable. Submission Details reserves space for the portal summary and editorial history, and action/link text has improved theme contrast.
  • Recovery and restore hardening — invalid associations are rejected before file operations, managed deletion remains tied to successful saves, and recoverable staged content is retained when recovery encounters a conflict.

Save boundaries and file meaning

Choose Save & Close in the child dialog, then Save & Close in Manuscript Details to persist the complete workflow. Canceling Manuscript Details discards its unsaved manuscript changes. Preparing files and resolving readiness are advisory; they do not record a submission or silently change manuscript history.

Integrity results describe the last observation, not continuous monitoring. Reopened files with saved fingerprints start as Not checked until checked again. A fingerprint can detect a changed external file but cannot reconstruct its previous contents. Use a managed copy when PaperRoute should retain the actual bytes.

Compatibility and backup

  • Storage schema 5 adds readiness and packet data while preserving existing manuscript, version, and submission histories. Existing libraries need no synthetic preparation records.
  • Portable ZIP backup/restore preserves readiness profiles, journal checklist templates, exact packet associations, saved fingerprints, and managed snapshot contents.
  • Externally linked files remain references to their original paths. Deleting a linked record does not delete its external original.
  • Excel exports cover the supported manuscript, submission, decision, and correspondence fields; use a ZIP backup to preserve the full library.
  • Keep a pre-upgrade v0.3 backup before moving a real library to v0.4. See the upgrade notes and user guide.

Certification and known limitations

Release certification completed successfully before Stable publication, including native Windows checks at 100%, 125%, and 150% scaling, installed v0.3-to-v0.4 upgrade, clean install/first launch, Preview updater certification through v0.4.0-rc.1, and release-candidate installer/update/portable asset verification. The development checkpoint retains the detailed development evidence.

Some narrow/high-DPI main-board sizes can still show an unnecessary horizontal shelf scrollbar while controls remain reachable. This existing cosmetic issue is tracked in #37 for later hardening. A structured reviewer-response matrix remains planned for v0.5.

PaperRoute remains local-first and licensed under GPL-3.0-only.
