1.9.0: sounds

The desktop has a voice. Control Panel > Sounds and Multimedia is the Windows 2000 applet: the event list in its two groups, a speaker beside every event that plays something, the Name box with a play button and Browse, the Scheme box and the Sound Volume slider. The Scheme box picks the sound pack: Windows 98, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows 7 and the thirteen Windows 7 themes (Afternoon, Calligraphy, Characters, Cityscape, Delta, Festival, Garden, Heritage, Landscape, Quirky, Raga, Savanna, Sonata). Any event can be pointed at another file from the pack or at one of your own. A System Beep page keeps the X bell's settings.

The desktop plays them where Windows did: Start Windows at logon, Windows Logoff or Exit Windows when you leave, Menu Popup and Menu Command on every menu, the message box sounds by their icon, System Notification for balloons, Minimize, Maximize and Restore from the window manager, and Start Navigation and Empty Recycle Bin from Explorer. Playback goes through paplay, pw-play, aplay, ffplay or mpv, whichever is installed; the installer now brings alsa-utils.
